Time well spent by the bureaucrats and parliament. I'm sure Ukrainians in shelters will rejoice.

Why not キイヴ

It's too early to make it official.

Or is the Ukraine crisis over and i missed the report ?

Official Japanese documents are still using the imperial emperor's calendar .

And then there's the gregorian calendar and the Chinese calendars also in use in Japan.

There's definitely some changes to the Japanese language that need to be discussed.

The changing of the kanji after the war and the incorrect use of hiragana and katakana because of the ignorance that Romanji isn't English.

When will Japanese ever learn to read and write correct English ?

As with ALL things for Japan, it takes great time, concentration and effort:

- “For the J gov’t to officially make the name changes, it will first need to amend a law that stipulates the names and locations of overseas diplomatic missions.

The ministry plans to submit the necessary amendment to the next Diet session at the earliest.” -

(Stalling under the conflict sways one direction, or another.)

Why can’t JAPAN just respect another country’s people, culture & language by learning to spell and pronounce things THEIR way ?

Here as a simple, local source on the subject:

Source: “Kyiv Post is Ukraine’s leading English-language newspaper. It has developed a sterling reputation for outstanding reporting, independent opinion and world-class journalism.

More pointless virtue signaling. Kiev is the Russian name given to the city as its residents were very fond of the Chicken dish with garlic butter. How much money will be wasted on new menus?

what a "serious issue" ,how abt abt Miu?

easier to pronounce...

It is called “Kiev” in English, so if you speak English, that is what it is. Japan is called “Japan” in English, but there are rumors that Japanese people call it “Nippon”.

Whatever you called it, Kyiv is a rubbled city now!

Hey, any city brave enough to face down the full power of the Russian army and force them to retreat with their tails between their legs has earned the right to be called whatever they want in my books.

While we're at it, is Japan going to change ペキン to ベイジン like the English and Mandarin languages?

No thanks. I'll continue to go with キエフ.

Try writing and remembering the now official katakana for the NPP at Chor-no'-bili チョルノービリ

Absolutely correct. Can we please stop all this nonsense?

Continued Russian aggression in Ukraine has prompted many English-language media outlets to switch from the Russian-derived spelling of "Kiev" to the Ukrainian Cyrillic-based spelling of "Kyiv."

Seems a fair enough reason to me.

’Kyiv’ it is then.

That's not even the worst of it. Try to understand Guangzhou = こうしゅう。。。。

Rodney

It's understanding the difference between Nippon and JAPAN that people struggle with.

When the migrations started coming from the ancient kingdoms of the now called Korean peninsula ,they brought with them the idea or quest to be Nihonjin where there could be harmony.

That's what being Nihonjin means is to live harmoniously.

The name Japan was given by map makers from Europe.

The original name for JAPAN before the migration conquest or annexation was - Kototama no sakiwa kuni .

Its the classical name of Japan and is translated as - The land where the mysterious workings of language bring bliss.

Similar to Aloha or the Awa no uta or Bussokuseki.

you have special information? Kiev is not rubbles. Russia doesn’t target civilians or civilian infrastructure. Only military targets using human shields. You have heard of RT News right?

You mean like hospitals, kindergartens, residential blocks and theatres full of children?

You have heard of RT News right?

Yeah, it prints what Putin tells it to print.
