This school is abusing the government subsidy they receive for foreign students. The most probable scenario is, most of these students quit school and returned to their home countries, but the school kept them enrolled to keep the government subsidies rolling in. Those who have stayed and are woking illegally shouldn't be too hard to track down. The girls will be working in Filipino clubs and the males will be making bentos or working for shoddy construction companies, of which there are many.

I stated in a previous similar article as well, that using the term “AWOL” is inappropriate in describing these illegal immigrants.

Absent Without Leave is a military term for service members who are unaccounted for. Using the term in this situation would imply that these students are subject to the same accountability reports as military personnel and must have leave approved by superiors; which is not the case.

These students had the same freedom of movement as Japanese civilians and chose to abuse it.

@expat "Teaching English"--There was a borderline unbelievable story from Alaska from last year. A homeless rights activist with a criminal background decided to set out for China on a rowboat supplied with fish and water. He said that he had a kid and ex living in China who he wanted to visit. Luckily for him, his tiny boat made it over the Bering Sea to Russia, where the authorities arrested him. After determining that he wasn't a threat, he was freed to hang around in a Russian town for months, reportedly teaching English to locals at cafes, before being repatriated to Alaska earlier this year. So technically it is possible for non-visa holders to be English teachers, though mostly in an informal off-the-books capacity.

Japanese universities are a joke. Pass the entrance exam, pay the tuition and you get a degree, whether you attend classes or not. No wonder a diploma is derisively referred to as an uketori (receipt).

Close the place down, it will send a warning to other such institutions!

Given the new immigration policy of accepting blue collar workers why bother tracking them down. I'm guessing the bone to pick with the so-called students is that they haven't been paying or will not pay their school fees. The situation where they pay fees and work at some minimum paid job is a win win for Japan. And I'd be quite happy to teach a class of them too.

I thought having the name Tokyo university would mean that the govt would cut off funding for the entire campus that is supposedly the most prestigious (estd 1877). Guess I could just do that too: Tokyo university...of upholstery repair

These type of "universities" are the academic equivalents of bartending schools. They serve no legitimate purpose other than to provide useless degrees while they perform their nefarious illegal immigration scams. Shut this place down.

While there is a government subsidy for some foreign students, there is no automatic subsidy for any and every foreign student. The total number of subsidized students for the last decade is on the order of ten thousand. Last year there were just under three hundred thousand foreign "students" in Japan. In other words only a tiny fraction are subsidized or have been subsidized.

Tokyo is a place name. It is not copyrighted. There are all manner of companies, colleges, and schools with Tokyo in the name, none of the related to the University of Tokyo.

What usually happens in these cases is that the college is required to return a portion of its subsidy and its future subsidy will be cut for N years in the future. Overall, the government subsidy to private colleges is not that large (less than 15% of operating costs on average) and not keyed to foreign students as such.

Criminal prosecution is unlikely because it is difficult to prove that the administration itself is responsible for students abscounding.

Some are just as some are that way in the US and the UK. I've taught at the university level in Japan, the US, and the UK. In the US there are guides to "party schools" that are as bad as anything associated with Japan.

In 18 years of teaching in Japan, I never heard the term uketori used for a diploma, and I taught courses in both English and Japanese students at universities ranging from the University of Tokyo on down to third tier operations.

As a Parent, if I'm paying for my Kid to be in Tokyo University, they better be there... and they're bunking off... I want to know about it...!!!!

....be grateful you're paying a lot less than parents whose kids attend less prestigious private universities. As a public university, they charge only the standard public fees: ¥535,800 per year for the undergrad course, as compared with ¥1,113,250 for (eg) Keio.
