11 million doses given to the over 70s in the U.K. and no deaths. 3 in 1000 experiencing significant side effects. The chances of dying from this vaccine are far less than COVID.

Too slow to approve it and they should have started vaccinating already. Also they always talk about the numbers of vaccines they have agreed to buy but not when they will get them.

@BB

The AstraZeneca vaccine has not been the one to cause deaths!

  The company is requesting special approval for the vaccine and plans to submit further data to regulators in March, it said in a statement.

By the time this vaccine is being administered, it will be June or July.

With all its wealth and business manufacturing acumen why has Japan missed the chance to return its nation to normality?

Japan has not been fully in the loop since the start of this pandemic.The lack of international cooperation, poor English language skills and the ineffective politicians have allowed this unsatisfactory state of affairs to burden the Japanese people unnecessarily.

You’ve given a few good reasons but missed the elephant in the room. The Olympics is one of the major reasons for what has happened in Japan.

But Japan has lagged behind other major economies in starting its COVID-19 inoculation campaign, partly because of its dependence on overseas makers and its requirement of domestic clinical trials for all vaccine candidates.

Gimmie a break, this is BULL! The real reason is that the pharmaceutical companies here want their cut and wouldn't get any of it, so they effectively forced the government into a corner.

It's right here...

the doses will be made mostly in Japan, and don't need to be kept refrigerated at the ultra-cold temperatures required for the Pfizer formula.

It's all about the money, and not the people!

Mostly a political vicious circle that became entrenched in health.

People become scared of side effects of treatments, politicians take the chance to score political points making more difficult to approve things thus "protecting the people", to use this method again more irrational fears are promoted constantly, so the people become scared of their own shadows and more exaggerated regulations are passed to save them.

Approving something that has not been in review for at least 5 years is faster-than-light speed in Japan.

Still no news of the AnGes/ Osaka University vaccine. Did it fail, or is it in limbo due to lack of funding?

I read somewhere that the AstraZeneca was the best based on how it was developed and longterm immunity to the virus or variations. I am not sure how true that is.

No one has died due to the Astra Zeneca vaccine, it has been shown to reduce Covid transmission, is safe for all adult age groups, doesn’t need special freezers and is available at cost price, yet anti vaxxers still peddle the same pathetic lies. Why, what is in it for you?

@wtfjapan,

Awesome comments.

Couldn't agree with you more.

I do not see why someone would say that people have died in Norway after getting this vaccine, when in fact it has not even been released in Norway. Only the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have so far been used there. All the deaths after getting those shots were in people with serious underlying health problems.

The European countries which have restricted the eventual use of AstraZeneca's vaccine to those younger than 65, or 55 in some cases, is not because evidence shows a danger to those individuals, but because the clinical trials have not yet been done to show that the shots are safe for those people. To repeat, it is not that the vaccine has been shown to be dangerous to older people, but that the shots have not yet been shown to be safe for older people.

Certainly the Japanese government is entitled to make its own decisions regarding the release of any Covid-19 vaccines, but is the requirement to make vaccines domestically worth the cost in lives of such a delay? If foreign manufacturers are not able or willing to supply the need, then by all means, make the vaccines in Japan. But do not allow any citizens to die because of an unwillingness to use vaccines made in other countries, whether those countries be the US, the EU, China, or Russia......if the vaccines work, and are safe.
