@Yubaru - Right, and every person who eats raw fish at a sushi shop will need to do the same.

No, that’s not necessary because fish does not carry the same bacteria and/parasites that make people sick.

@Yubaru - Your last comment contradicts the first. A warning on the menu would be good, but it does not free the operator. Yes, it’s a persons choice, but these people made the choice, got sick and died, then they sued the restaurant.

Homo Erectus discovered the use of fire for cooking meat 600,000 years ago.

Scientists widely believe this is what set humans on their evolutionary path - esp of brain development.

Less we forget.

And that doesn't excuse the restaurant for unsanitary practices.

There is a very good reason to cook meat before you eat it, and this is it. The operator of this chain needs to make people sign a waiver if they are going to eat raw meat. It’s just a gamble! Even under the most strict of hygienic conditions there are harmful bacteria living within the meat. Raw chicken is even more dangerous.

Restaurants must abide by all sanitary laws, no excuse for that.

But please cook the meat before eating it, that is what we (humans) have been doing for thousands of years. In my opinion there will always be a risk in eating raw meat.

the fish I just ate at the sushi restaurant I go to was caught and served that day.

Then you must have gone to a crap sushi restaurant, because the good ones would never serve you a fish caught that day.

Must admit, I do occasionally go for raw horse or raw chicken.

I got food poisoning from raw (well seared) chicken last year. I'm done with that!

I eat raw horse occasionally. It freaks me out being raw, but it's so good, so I still eat it anyways.

Eating raw fish is one thing. (I do)

But eating raw meat?!!  What are you thinking folks?!!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Above all its very important to keep a clean kitchen especially the area for preparing foods.

Two cutting boards is also a wise choice for meat eaters. Glass for meat, bamboo or wood for everything else.

Hell raw goat meat is great too! Raw liver, raw chicken, raw fish, all of them!

Just go to a reputable establishment and not one that prides itself on LOW prices!

You do get what you pay for!

How about steak tartare, or even rare steak and hamburgers, and Korean Yukhoe?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Humans eat raw fish and meat, as long as it's fresh and handled in sanitary conditions. There is a lot of the inevitable victim blaming going on here. I happen to like steak tartare and good raw meat, just as I like sashimi. I can't see the difference, why is one food group acceptable and not the other.

Don't really understand this country's fascination with eating food raw. Sushi is OK but cook the rest for me.

hint...5 people dead. Fugu is different before you argue back as it is a poisonous fish.

@zichi. I want to add to your comment, don’t store raw fish with meat or use the the same knife or chopping board. Also don’t store red and white meat together. Stay safe.

Certainly not crap. Whatever gave you that idea?

You'd better stick with スシロー since that's all you appear to be familiar with.

All readers back on topic please. This story is not about sushi. Posts that do not focus on the story will be removed.

Most meat is frozen or chilled to a temperature that will kill bacteria immediately after slaughter. Anyway, many cooked meats are better after it's been hung for a few days. 21 day hung beef is delicious.

@wipeout...well said!

Sorry to disagree mate, but the fish I just ate at the sushi restaurant I go to was caught and served that day.

That steak your eating could be a few days old...if not more.

As a vegetarian my comment may be bias, but still, $1.5m for 5 people death money is pretty cheap.

No it doesn't, as I was responding to

The operator of this chain needs to make people sign a waiver if they are going to eat raw meat.

That is ludicrous in this country, as you would have to do the same for any establishment that serves raw food. Hence the comment about adding a disclaimer in the menu.

And it is ludicrous, "Oh hey, you have to sign this before you can eat here!"

Think about that....there would be NO end to the paperwork, just to get a bite to eat. Raw veggies, folks here have died from poorly handled veggies, so gotta include them.

Raw fish, don't begin to talk about all the potential there, raw chicken, you even stated that one.

Yeah, it's a dumb idea in my opinion, and a great way to lose business.

Right, and every person who eats raw fish at a sushi shop will need to do the same. No I don't think so, the people have the right to expect that the establishment is following sanitary guidelines, and they have the choice to eat it or not.

The establishment is getting off easy in my opinion.

Even under the most strict of hygienic conditions there are harmful bacteria living within the meat. Raw chicken is even more dangerous.

True, yet it's again up to the person who orders it. A warning in the menu should be enough.
