In my humble opinion, the total number of cases really don't matter and is just another statistic in this pandemic. What's more important are the number of those who passed on, those who recovered and the number of active cases.

infections might be up but the number of deaths is minuscule.

No need to panic at all...

In my humble opinion, the total number of cases really don't matter and is just another statistic in this pandemic. What's more important are the number of those who passed on, those who recovered and the number of active cases.

And if you put those numbers into percentages it looks even less serious. I'm almost 60 with COPD so high risk but still believe we need to let the virus run its course and get everyone back to a normal life.

Thats exactly what many in the US were saying once. Things change very quickly.

This is not a time to get complacent heading into a long, cold winter. Japan needs to keep up the fight against this deadly virus. Distancing, masks, hand-washing and contact tracing.

We should all learn from the world leader in fighting this pandemic - Taiwan.

Japan spent $10 million bribing WHO to reclassify approx 700 cases from Diamond Princess as international conveyance in order to save face and the Olympics. Money well spent, NOT!

The milestone of 100,000 confirmed cases comes as the administration of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is considering extending its domestic travel subsidy program in an effort to prop up the world's third-largest economy, which saw a record contraction in the April-June quarter.

amid a recent uptick in the number of new infections coinciding with a resumption of economic activity.

If you put these two paragraphs together you can conclude that the economy is more important to the Japanese government than public health.

Go get Covid campaign is working well.

Exactly. I'm just baffled at the lack of visibility towards the Taiwanese and New Zealander ways of combatting COVID. Every time we mention those, it's almost like we're barely scratching the surface. People need to carry the message over continents and oceans so we can learn from those ways and then get rid of that virus for real.

Oh please! How long does it take? Still waiting for the Obon and Silver Week spikes here.

The doom-mongers have been misguided about this since day one. There is clearly more at play in the case of the US. The US cannot function without added drama and a spotlight...

Meanwhile the media, politicians and some celebrities the world over are loving every minute of milking this. Not hard to do when so much ignorance and fear is at play. At the same time, untold social and economic damage is being caused for the average person...

excellent point

Not even the economy. Just the stupid Olympics.

The actual numbers are probably much, much, higher, as in the beginning and even now, the restrictions on testing people have been pretty strict, and there is no way to know the actual numbers of people infected here.

Japan kept the numbers artificially lower, to keep appearances up, as noted, for the Olympics, and that continues today as well!

@Do the Hustle

that the economy is more important to the Japanese government than public health

Yes, that is what we all understand already.

But for me personally, I am responsible for my own life and the life of my family. Not the government!

I don't want to be depend on the governments actions or decisions according how to prevent myself and everyone around me.

Even if the Government tells me, the Corona Situation is OK, I will continue with my personal preventions like wearing mask, keep social distance, and so on...

I don't give anything about what the government is telling.

I open my eyes and ears, look around and judge the current Corona situation by myself!

Increased testing. How many have symptoms? How many are asysmptomatic? How many are critical in the hospital? How many total hospital beds? What is the contact tracing - from one prefecture to another?

This "news" is very short on facts and full of blather.

@since1961

still believe we need to let the virus run its course and get everyone back to a normal life.

I agree, but, for me currently, a normal life means, wearing mask, washing hands much more than before, use sanitizer and keep social distance where it is possible.

This "news" is very short on facts and full of blather.

Well here are some facts:

U.S. hits 9 million Covid-19 cases less than a week before Election Day

The United States records more than 500,000 new COVID-19 cases in the past week, as patients are overwhelming hospitals across the country.

France reported 523 deaths from the disease on Tuesday, the most since April 22.

Those are the facts. You are welcome to check for yourself.

-5 ( +20 / -25 )

A friend had covid: high temperature, loss of taste etc. meant no doubt about it. She went to an Otorhinolaryngologist. He never used the word covid, didn't test her or even suggest she get a test, sent her home with the equivalent of a prescription for aspirin. She lives with her aged mother-in-law. The doctor never asked about home details.

The fact is all clinics and most hospitals are private businesses and they do not want to be associated with the virus because it will scare away normal customers (patients). Thus we have heard about people being told to use the back entrance for secret covid tests.

All this means is that the numbers in Japan are pure fantasy. Stay safe, wear your mask, social distance, use your brain.

-4 ( +19 / -23 )

I think a good personal strategy is to get tested for antibodies. If you know you already had it then mentally you can feel at ease while still following social distancing, etc.

You won't be able to quote these numbers and boasting if the countries you mentioned kept testing to a minimum. It is utter nonsense comparing apples and oranges.

The GoTo campaign has ensured the virus spread to all parts of Japan and will increase throughout winter. While they might have had good intentions, It is a tragically miscalculated plan to boost the economy. It will end up costing much more to deal with the aftermath. Those same businesses they were attempting to help, will still be in trouble after the Goto campaign ends and as the government admits, medical services will be under immense strain. Just my 2 yen’s worth.

Japan is successfully living with coronavirus. Yes, the actual number is probably a million plus but if the goal isn't elimination and people are able to recover without hospitalization then what does it matter.

Hospitals aren't stranded, deaths are low and apart from masks, life is normal.

No doubt infections will increase in winter but seeing as the second peak was overcome without an s.o.e, I am optimistic Japan will not become like Europe.

1700 deaths from 100000 cases makes some 0.17% deaths from all corona related cases.

15 ( +21 / -6 )

100,000 ? Only stupid govt would believe that.

-7 ( +12 / -19 )

In other words 1700 deaths means 0.000014% from whole japanese population.

I know header like that is not "catchy" but yes...better to read latest statement from WHO abt recent covid issue...

Well said Monty, You can read all of what the government, health department etc, etc are saying and are going to do but your comments in doing what you have to do to keep your family safe and well is exactly what my wife and I are doing. It’s called COMMON SENCE.

I also read that Japan is now concerned about the upcoming winter/ flue season.

I live in Australia and my wife and I have been totally house quarantined since March due to both having terminal lung deceases and the colds and flue have not been mentioned once on any news media and no reports by the hospitals or medical team have been reported. Interesting. Stay safe and keep your family safe and well.

Here is another fact for ya...Japan ranked 152nd in the world in tests per mil /population, outgunned by such heavyweights such as Honduras, Guatemala, Trinidad&Tobago , Mongolia and pretty much every other country....you dont test, you don,t find...Nihon sugooi, great strategy LDP, safety Olympics rule.

The situation is deteriorating worldwide as there is no sign of any decline of the virus spread. Be alert..

Based on a 7-day moving average, the daily number of people tested positive has exceeded 550,000 with near 7,500 deaths. These are new records. Be cautious..

I strongly assume Japan let disseminate Covid to reduce its old costly population without mentioning the cause of real death because it is a stigma in Japan. Hiding under the carpet is a national sport.

It has been throughly reported doctors don't use test or assess.

Let's wait a few years to discover the truth.

The economy is a big part of public health. Many countries are ignoring this. Japan has successfully balanced our freedoms vs our risks. As individuals we can gather our own facts and decide how serious the threat is.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

The numbers must be twice or thrice higher.

My girlfriend in the US who tells me that her uncle in Japan, a successful Vietnamese Japanese business-owner, got a mysterious pneumonic illness and died. His house was swarmed by Japanese police and medical guys in hazmat suit to take the corpse and dispose it somewhere. The family never gets an answer of what really caused his death. This even happened in May.

Based on my experience, I have to concur with Germany on this one.

I returned to Japan on the 2nd of April, they tested me upon arrival( Yes, I managed to get back in).

They brought me by bus, the only passenger there, to the front of a car rental shop.

What the quarantine guy said was that positive or not, they would call me within 2 days. Never heard back from them.

Then on the 25th of September I started to feel sick, high fever, body ache, tiredness. As the symptoms persisted until the 28th, I called the Covid testing centre number in my city. After almost 1 h on the phone, I was told to just visit a clinic. There, the doctor gave me cold meds and said to return if I did not get better within 4 days.

On 2nd of October I still had same symptoms. Doctor gave meds for a few more days. Nothing.

On the 7th I called the covid number again, they asked same questions over and over . ''Well, go see your GP again.'' said the lady with an upset tone.

The doctor checked me again. He said '' Well, if you really think you need the test, I can book it for you, but keep in mind that you'll be tested only on Tuesday next week and the results will come within 3 days.

I said yes, of course. Got the results on Monday, 19th of October, and it was negative. Yet, my company told me I must stay at home for 2 more weeks as precaution.

So, I will be back to work on the 4th of November. I was warned already that I will not receive my salary.

Easy to understand why numbers are so low in Japan.

very interesting that you say that Jon, cause ALOT of my Japanese coworkers and friends as well as many foreign friends living in Japan have said the EXACT SAME THING.

I have to agree with you.

Hit the nail on the head.

...or roughly the number of new cases the US is seeing daily. MAGA?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

That's the number of cases America get in a couple of days. We all should be grateful to be in the best country on earth. No draconian lockdowns, no forced masks, no forced social distance, only friendly recommendations. Thanks Japan!
