It is horrible to ban people temporarily from one country going to another, but in these extraordinary times, India should have been put a red list of no-entry countries into Japan, and that should have been done months ago. New variants are rampant there, and now they are coming to Japan because of this idiotic government allowing people in. Put elementary schoolchildren in charge. They would do a much better job than the shower at the top here. Power to the schoolchildren.

TOO LITTLE !! TOO LATE !! Japan needs to use Australian and New Zealand quarantine policies as a model to control this man made CCP virus !

It's sad to see the whole world go crazy. I thought the world would be able to work out a standard set of protocols that every country follows.

Anyways, different treatment of foreigners vs. Japanese citizens is not good. The virus does not care if you are nihonjin or not. Anyone who is a resident of Japan or has a good reason to visit Japan should be allowed to come and follow the exact same protocols for quarantine that Japanese citizens do.

A friend of mine who returned to Japan from America early this month had a 14 day quarantine at home, with her family and kids. Had she contracted it, she'd have given it to her family, who in turn would have taken it to their workplace/school. Not exactly a quarantine is it!?

By contrast, my Taiwanese friend who just returned to Taiwan from Japan on Sunday was "decontaminated" on arrival, whisked away to a special hotel where he's to stay for 14 days. Everything in the room is covered in plastic. He's not allowed out, is checked up on daily, all meals delivered with EVERYTHING thrown away afterwards. Not good for the environment, but they sure are taking covid a lot more seriously than Japan!

Why is Japan doing this when Japan has the HIGHEST COVID19 cases in Asia? Are they going to quarentine all the people coming for the Olympics? I bet no!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

No entry from those countries allowed.

@zichi - thanks as ever for the History lesson, however back then, they didnt have the massive killer pandemic so bring with them.

Japan, make the quarantine for all travellers entering from anywhere, regardless of nationality too (ie Japanese)

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Ah yes, more foreigner-blaming while the locals are continue to spread the virus at will.

Well done, LDP.

@Tom

Japan is not safe now.

Any trip on a rush hour train in any big city will show you that.

As Japan has already banned the entry of foreign nationals, including those with resident status, who have been to those countries within the past two weeks, except under special circumstances, the measure primarily effects Japanese citizens.

Huh? When did that happen? Are we back to the racist immigration policies? Why are Japanese citizens treated differently than foreign residents? I thought we were done with this BS after the international outcry the first time around. Now they’re trying this again?

Median period of infection is 4-5 days, so over one week, the chance to develop symptoms is low.

Japan's 14 days is extra secure, or rather would be if it was actually enforced.

Guess you didnt actually read the article huh? Clearly stated it's a 10 day quarantine. Not 14 as you wrote here. It's actually only 3 days for some countries

No, Guess you don’t know the rule.

It is the mandatory stay in an hotel upon arrival. 10 days.

Then they still have to do the rest of the quarantine in an hotel or at home to complete the 14 days required.

Same for the three days period, still 11 days remaining after.

Japan has not changed anything, just the period of mandatory stay at a designated hotel upon arrival.

go to the Ministry of Justice site fore more understanding

Every mortal entering Japan (except Olympic athletes and others who aren't mortals) has to quarantine for 14 days.

The 10 days being referred to here is time spent in a government mandated location. For India and Pakistan this was 6 days before and for a bunch of other countries 3 days. After that the remaining days must be spent at home or in another location indication by the traveller. Taking taxis, public transport etc. still isn't allowed.

The reason they do this is to test the traveller multiple times during this period so it is not a bad thing to keeping Japan safe. Just very tiresome for the traveller.

Anyone who has any doubt about India's COVID - 19 and it's Awesome speed of spreading watch this link from You Tube .

Goodlucktoyou....

Sorry, this is nonsense... in fact EVERY (real) medical expert says 14 is the max.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Every medical expert states 14-28 days. Depends on negative testing after 14 days.

The incubation period of Covid 19 is 2 to 10 days with a median of 4/5 days. There have been reports of extreme cases up to 14 days. These are extremely rare. Thats why 10 days is the usual quarantine period. Japan's 14 days is extra secure, or rather would be if it was actually enforced.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Sorry, but unless they are citizens or permanent residents they should be barred

In fact, according to the article it seems even PRs are banned:

As Japan has already banned the entry of foreign nationals, including those with resident status, who have been to those countries within the past two weeks, except under special circumstances, the measure primarily effects Japanese citizens.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The variants are already in Japan being spread on trains and offices, schools and care homes. You cannot mitigate the spread unless you take proper, effective measures domestically.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Under 70 days any corona linked quarantine doesn’t make any sense. Repeatedly told you so, but I see, you prefer learning by (nothing) doing. Can’t be helped.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

10 days, for a 14 day incubation period.

Yes, that math is absolutely correct.

Can't even get first grade math down, Japan, huh?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Right and Japanese citizens have to spend 14 days in quarantine prior to being allowed to use public transportation, like getting on a flight to Okinawa, after returning from overseas.

Weird isnt it?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Did I miss the memo that the incubation period is shorter for Japanese nationals? Is it because of their longer colons?

Seriously, even the "extended" quarantine periods are not long enough and the pre-extended ones are laughable.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

To late anyhow, the variants are already well established in Japan thanks to their lax requirements for quarantine. Cannot put the genie back in the bottle with this belated pretense at appearing to do something

9 ( +10 / -1 )

This is a good step, and actually, should be extended to 14 days with strict monitoring for ANYONE entering Japan (citizen or not). Any violation of the quarantine should incur serious consequences, including deportation.

Having said that, the biggest concern for Japan right now is the domestic spread of the infection that is already in full swing and has nothing to do with the newest variants. Unless tighter measures are taken, things will continue to remain unstable and will actually become a whole lot worse if the Olympics trigger multiple clusters.

Clueless pathetic J gov. Why not from midnight why wait until Friday. Did you not see what happened in UK

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I wonder how Japanese people will feel in the future when the Tokyo variant is the new scary strain circulating. While it make sense to be wary of travel from areas with emergent strains, the complete failure to contain and trace the virus domestically, combined with repeated xenophobic rhetoric and botched vaccine program, is certainly setting this up to happen.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Anyway, everyone can just walk in and out of their hotels as they please. No control at all.

and it is open door for anyone around the games, from any country.

as from July one i am at the seaside far away from Tokyo. If the Games are cancelled it will be a nice break.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

The article is not clear.

It is 10 days mandatory in a designated location/hotel. Then there is still the quarantine days to complete the 14 days quaratine, ie additional 4 days, to be spend in a hotel or at home

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Pathetic

16 ( +16 / -0 )

10-day quarantine, 3-day, sometimes 5-day, and of course the old favourite, 14-day..... I guess Covid discriminates in favour of some, and against others, depending on geographical location?
