This is proper genius and talent. Shogi is a very intricate game, much more complex than chess (as one can reuse the captured figures), anyone mastering it so young deserves a lot of respect. For the interested, here is another youngster, Habu, totally destroying a master, then going on and winning the title himself. This is one of the most spectacular moments in the recorded history of the game:

It's remarkable but just starting. Not surprising to many spectators. Fujii deserves more titles and honors.

There's a documentary about Habu and AI in shogi on right now on NHK BS1 right now. It's a fascinating program. They'll probably repeat it sometime in case you're interested.

Who won, Habu or AI ?

By the way is Habu retired ? Don't hear about him anymore.

The reporting of shogi by the media is uneducative and awful.

Not true.

With a captured piece being reused on own side, shogi players have more choices for a turn. A drawn match is very rare, mostly because all pieces participate in the match to the end, complexity is maintained.

Who won, Habu or AI ?

They didn't match, and has yet.

He is still active, though not currently holding any title.

The reporting of shogi by the media is uneducative and awful.

How? I also enjoy non-substantial side-stories such as about what professional shogi players actually order for lunch :)

The documentary was about how younger players were training with computers to beat Habu, which they managed in the end.

My favourite part of the documentary was when Habu made a killer move and then reached over and started eating a cream cake in front of his floundering opponent who then resigned.
