Yubaru: Trains run early enough if you want to spend the night drinking.

Also, maintenance work is done during the night. Nothing can be done during day time.

And why in the hell dont they run them 24/7 NOW? Right, Mommy government likes to keep their children in line!

Taxi drivers will be angry!

Why is the government ‘urging’ the railway lines to make more money? Can’t the CEOs of the railways figure that out by themselves? (More trains at peak times - before & after games; more trains when demand - night - rises)

This is going to cause confusion I urge them to gain the publics understanding. Hope they pledge to form a Pannel to discuss this and give a report by September.

hey let's do something that benefits paying passengers while a lot of foreigners are here and then stop doing it after they leave... smh

If trains could run later at least on Fridays and Saturdays and not stop earlier than usual it would be nice. 11:30PM if way too early to decide on a all nighter

Outside some world cities subways rarely run 24 hours. A whole lot of maintenace is done via the overnight hours to make sure the more profitable daylight hours run.

Tokyo Government: Of course, we have been asked to do this for the tax-paying general public in the past, given the vast number of overtime workers and late night events in Japan, but we Don't really care about the local people, we are just concerned about our image abroad. If a foreign person visits and misses a train and must spend the night in the city, despite not having to work again the next Morning, it would be very regrettable if word of negative experience spread. So, please praise us for this extraordinary effort on our parts. Thank you.

So, no excuse any more to go to a love hotel if you miss the last train.

I suppose the Taxi Union(s) won't mind or, on the contrary, livid against it. This I call "The Transit pre-Olympics tryouts."

Don't catch trains so I don't care, but I understand the need for transport at night for party people.

London now has the underground running 24 hrs during the weekends, and has had a great night bus network for a very very long time.

I thought exactly the same thing when I first came to Japan. It’s all about crowd control. They can’t have people partying all night in Shinjuku and Shibuya. It will effect the profits of Japan Inc. if their slaves are all hungover.

so 2 hours which is a bout 8 extra train ( rinkai is 4 per hour) on the most expensive line in tokyo...

Have you ever been in Tokyo and ridden our trains? Most lines have only one track in each direction. If you are going to do maintenance, you can't have trains running.

Look at New York and London where trains run 24 hours. Breakdowns are frequent especially faults with points (switches) or cracked rails.. In the case of London, when I fly into Heathrow on a Sunday, it is not unusual to find large chunks of the Underground shut down during the daytime for maintenance that they cannot do at night.

When I went from Sheffield to London in early December, I had to take a circuitous route because the direct line was partially shut down on Sunday for track work. This is very common in Britain.

Gotta love the Comment from the PHD in public policy. Maybe, they run trains 24/7 because it is not cost effective and because of manpower issues?

@smith zzzzzzzzzzz. Usual Japan bash for the sake of it! So much maintenance done over night int he whole . what? 5 hours that the network closes for. Ever wonder why its so reliable to start with?
