Over 60 percent of the slots remain vacant for two weeks through June 27, with the Tokyo site having capacity to administer 10,000 shots daily and Osaka 5,000.

In Tokyo alone, 60% vacancy would be 6,000 shots/day — enough to vaccinate Tokyo’s 40,000 police officers, its 18,000 fire personnel, and the entire nation’s 14,000 Coast Guard personnel between now and June 27.

But will they be that efficient?

Centralised vaccination sites are not really the way to go.( I think.) More locally available sites, train stations, transport hubs, supermarket car parks. More convenient and less stress than booking, travelling and being herded into a group. But that’s not complicated enough so mass 60% empty is a better way to go. And police interact with the public all day, first responders too, teachers all government employees shouldn’t they already be vaccinated? Medical staff still not 100% so it will take time.

21 ( +25 / -4 )

From today my town is making slots availble to those under 65 who have preexisting conditions or thosd who are teachers and care givers who come in contact with numerous others on a daily basis so cancelled shots don't go to waste.

My wife and I, both teachers are going on the waiting list. I look forward to getting my throughly tested, decades of research in the making mRNA vaccine.

These are the words of the former director of the CDC. I’ll take his words over Burning Bush

We need to support vaccination around the world not only to save lives and resume travel and trade but because anywhere there’s uncontrolled spread of Covid, there’s a risk that dangerous variants could emerge.

10 ( +19 / -9 )

Agree with Cricky on the need for more local vaccination centers. It's such an obvious, rational and simple thing to do. It's no surprise then that the J-gov have decided to do something else.

9 ( +15 / -6 )

Now with 2 vaccinations-symptom a slightly stiff upper arm. No pathetic fear of so called untested chemicals Life as usual for me

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Shots that don't get into arms are a waste. If prioritized people aren't signing up, then those shots need to go into other arms. Simple.

Read there is a new vaccine that just finished phase 3 trials that has a 90% effectivity. It isn't approved for emergency use anywhere, but it isn't mRNA, it stores at normal refrigerator temperatures and they have predicted 150M doses/month can be created. 30,000 people were part of the trials. All serious COVID cases were avoided. It is a 2-dose vaccine as well.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

60% vacancy and now they will act? I wonder how much sense of urgency there really is here...

9 ( +13 / -4 )

talking to a lot of Japanese (small sample size) there is a good portion of them that are not planning on getting the vaccs.

makes sense, there’s no real incentive to get it.

the vaccs is still experimental. (It only got approved for emergency) and they cant force you to get it.

but their reluctance really stems from lack of trust from the government and lack of trust from a foreign medicine.

it would probably be a different story if a local Japanese pharma would of roll out with it.

-4 ( +10 / -14 )

It would have been better to prioritize vulnerable people of all ages first but I guess the level of organization that this would take is too high for what the government has shown it can do. At least it makes sense to vaccinate the police and other people that needs to interact closely with the public.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

Maybe I should just show up and see if they'll vaccinate me.

Nope, can't do it without the stupid voucher that has not been sent to me by my stupid city hall that can't even tie their own shoes.

There's gotta be some paper involved somewhere! Can't do it without paper! Nope, nope nope.

14 ( +19 / -5 )

Very low take up rate, a lot of my Japanese colleagues simply don't care. Nothing to do with the ridiculous comment from @Burning Bush. Even though not being used here they wouldn't know the difference between AZ/J&J vs Pfizer and Moderna that are.

I do know the difference and would happily any of the 4 stuck in me right now

8 ( +15 / -7 )

It is becoming abundantly clear that the Japanese are not sold on the vaccines. But iff you gauged the demand for the vaccine by the number of expats wincing on Japan Today forums you would think 100% of the residents want it.

-4 ( +9 / -13 )

Nothing happening in Sagamihara, no mail no info, exactly what I expected

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Just give them to whoever wants it, first come first served, it's obvious that a lot of people are in wait-and-see mode.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Why am I not surprised?

There is a big difference between making it available, and actively contacting people and queueing them up.

Mass vaccination

all those people will be victims, they have no clue about what will be injected. this airline staff has been forced to get a shot to keep her job....

-17 ( +7 / -24 )

If these centers only inoculate select groups of people, then they cannot be described as "mass."

In this kind of case, mass means everyone, or non-discriminatory. When a "mass evacuation" is ordered, for example, it means the entire population of an area, not a selected minority. How hard is this for reporters and editors in Japan to understand?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

all those people will be victims, they have no clue about what will be injected. this airline staff has been forced to get a shot to keep her job....

Most of us don't have a clue about medical treatments, diseases and such, about most things really. That's why there are all kinds of professionals for all the different fields.

In this case, if you're hesitant to get the vaccine just ask your doctor

19 ( +21 / -2 )

We will have the first shot at the end of this month then a couple of weeks for the second. Local clinic.

Nice to hear that!

Which one do you get?

I’m going to get a second opinion.

Thanks for your information.

My parents in law also got Pfizer.

My company is also preparing Pfizer for us.

Sounds the most effective so far.

why second opinion?? why not 1000 opinions??

Nobody will take responsibility in case of medical problems, use your own brain if you have....

-19 ( +6 / -25 )

But if you gauged the demand for the vaccine by the number of expats wincing on Japan Today forums you would think 100% of the residents want it.

Or gauging by the other half of the comments you would think 100% of the residents DON’T want it.

The truth obviously lies somewhere in the middle and making a judgement based on JT comments is probably not the smartest way to judge demand.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

It is awful. So ridiculous.

I went to the Ohtemachi site last week at 7pm to see if I can get a shot from amongst the dethawed ones they will throw away at the end of the day. They turned me away and said “No. Only 65 and above are permitted.” What tools. Total bureaucratic incompetence. There were a bunch of self-important officials with clipboards, bags of empty counters, and basically lots of people hanging around doing nothing. Total abject waste.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Now with 2 vaccinations-symptom a slightly stiff upper arm. No pathetic fear of so called untested chemicals Life as usual for me.

Looking forward to an update in 10 years time.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

So when it first started we couldn't get any appointments for the children's grandparents!

Now we finally get some elsewhere but not until mid July and now the centre doesn't have enough people so we tried changing the grandparents to some time earlier there and were told that was not possible.

I am also helping out my 85 year old neighbour who lives alone and has no family to help got him an appointment also the same time as the grandparents but no system in place to change appointments to this centre that is being under used.

It is not that people don't want the vaccine it is they have made things so complicated with all the hoops one needs to jump through.

I would be getting mine if only my ward would send me the needed paper but still nothing I am nearly 60 so what are they waiting for?

2 ( +8 / -6 )

It is becoming abundantly clear that the Japanese are not sold on the vaccines

well no it isn't.

In fact places like the city in Fukushima made it simple and easy to get vaccinated they got 84% of their elderly Vaccinated quickly and are now working on getting the rest of their residence Vaccinated.

This simple fact shows people want the vaccine and it is just the mismanagement and complicated mess that is the problem.

4 ( +12 / -8 )

Pfizer blue pill. Pfizer covid vaccine.

Me love Pfizer.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

What is the reason? I’ve been told by numerous Japanese people that they want to wait until a domestic CIC one is produced.

by that time the pandemic will be over, these people are assuming that Japan can even produce a vaccine as effective as Moderna or Pfizer and that the Japanese vaccine will have no side effects. so in the meantime they can roll the dice and hope that they dont get infected before a Japanese vaccine is even developed, goodluck

3 ( +7 / -4 )

I am a doctor who do not recommend those shots.

A Doctor!

Well ok but a chiropractor with a doctorate or a homeopath with a doctorate are not doctors.

And if you are actually a medical doctor are you a virologist or expert on Vaccines?

I am going to guess, no.

I wouldn't go to a gynecologist for a broken leg, so I would basically take my Vaccine advice from a doctor that specialises in that and they say the Vaccines are safe.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

@KentarogaijinToday

Follow science and don't be an Antivaxxer Loser !!..

The science is not complete on the vaccines. Only approved for emergency use. I live in the US and the vaccines have not been fully approved by FDA, yet. Still going through testing and trials. The people lining up to take it are the testing and trial samples.

-6 ( +6 / -12 )

talking to a lot of Japanese (small sample size) there is a good portion of them that are not planning on getting the vaccs.

Me too, I'm having the same feedback. People seems to be not so scared about it, even older people. They obviously didn't suffer this pandemia as other parts of the word did.

But the government is quite not doing much to suggest people to get the vaccines, and they should if they really want to reactivate the country.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Here in the UK I've had two Pfizers - second one was six weeks ago - not a single side effect. Nobody I know has had any side effects from either Pfizer or AZ. It's hard to understand what all these reluctant Japanese are worried about.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

I think there are vacant slots because the reservation system is too bothersome for many older people, especially with online registration. I am lucky enough to live in a Tokyo ward where vaccinations are given by "family doctors". My wife and I received our vouchers on May 25. We attended separate clinics within short walks from home, with my first jab on Jun 5th, and my wife's Jun 12. Second is scheduled for 3 weeks following the first. We were both in and out in 20-25 minutes, which included the required 15 minute post-jab wait.

Whether to get vaccinated or not is a personal choice but one should realize this is a war, and whereas the war may never be won as it was with smallpox, battles can be. There may be adverse reactions to the vaccines for some, and maybe others will be affected down the road but the extremely small risk is one worth taking. Any possible risk that may exist is considerably lower than the risk associated with COVID-19 infection, and vastly outweighed by the benefits of protecting people and, hopefully, preventing the disease from spreading.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

In Adachi-ku, from the 28th, people 64 and younger will receive their vaccine tickets for the Pfizer vaccine. They are still figuring out the locations: https://www.city.adachi.tokyo.jp/esekanri/corona-wakuchin.html

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I would just add this:

While there may be hesitancy based on the hastiness (compared to other vaccines) in which this particular group of vaccines have been rushed into market, you have to remember that:

-Practically every single world leader, parliamentarian or ruler around the world will be vaxed this year, if not already.

-Every single elite level competitor coming to the Olympics, along with all their staff, sponsors and journalists in tow, will be vaxed.

-Most of the rest of the sports world, perhaps higher than 95% of all top athletes in the biz, have been vaxed, too.

Unless you think that these elites are somehow fooling the public by taking secret "better" vaccinations for show, or worse, are even faking getting vaxed (none of which is true), then they are all doing the exact same thing as you will do, to finally get our lives back to some level of normalcy.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

There are reports of a spike in vaccine deaths in the U. S.

Japan had no reason to rush it at this point to anyone not vulnerable to COVID.

-10 ( +5 / -15 )

It was just announced that these two mass vaccination centers are planning to start inoculating people under the age of 65 as early as Thursday (June 17) in an expanded drive to fill vacant spots. Developing.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

any same day shots, or is everything a waitling list to a waiting list?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

A state-run mass coronavirus vaccination site in Tokyo will start giving shots to police and other officials in charge of crisis management in addition to elderly people nationwide to fill vacant slots

Looks like the elderly are sharper than we give them credit for. Many of them are hesitent to take this hastily developed shot with a VAERS record that is off the charts. Here is an interview with Steve Malone, the inventor of the mRNA technology:

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

@sf2k - Still need the magic vaccination ticket from your city/ward office first.

Whether to get vaccinated or not is a personal choice but one should realize this is a war, and whereas the war may never be won as it was with smallpox, battles can be.

It is misleading to a) compare Corona with with smallpox, and b) to compare the mRNA spike shot with a traditional, well-understood vaccine.

There may be adverse reactions to the vaccines for some, and maybe others will be affected down the road but the extremely small risk is one worth taking.

Is it? There is ever more evidence that Corona can be mitigated with treatment, while the damage from the spike protein, once it gets away from the muscle tissue, is unpredictable.

Any possible risk that may exist is considerably lower than the risk associated with COVID-19 infection, and vastly outweighed by the benefits of protecting people and, hopefully, preventing the disease from spreading.

Did you notice that the latest claim from the establishment is that even the vaccinated spread it?

Geez...

I swear that I'm fed up with vaccine skeptics regardless of wherever they come from. If the elderly don't want to get vaccinated, their loss. Frontline personel should have been vaccinated first and foremost a while ago. Also if anything, I'm glad that it will soon open up to younger adult age groups who don't want to make covid become a pre-existing condition if they catch it.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Honestly, all these alarmists on here having the vapours over side effects that are either minor or a far more remote possibility than anything that might happen to you if you catch Covid.

How about the alarmists having vapors over Covid-19. I had it. And like 99% of other infected people, it was nothing.

Now I’m told that if I don’t get vaccine, I could die. Of what?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

zichi

If I become infected with Covid I won't survive it.

How in the world do you get to that opinion? Have you looked at the infection mortality rates?

If I get the vaccinations I probably will survive.

Yes, probably you will. Is that your risk/benefit analysis?

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

I am a doctor who do not recommend those shots.

covid vaccines have been shown to be over 90% effective, the chances of dying from the vaccine is very very small almost non existant compared to the 100million people already vaccinated.

the statistic show that unvaccinated people are far more likely to die of covid and if infected and recover their lifelong effects from the virus may be substantially worse than those that are vaccinated .

Once again the science and facts proves the deniers wrong again

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Now I’m told that if I don’t get vaccine, I could die. Of what?

some people just dont get it,

chances of dying from the vaccine is almost 0 a few dozen people in over 100million vaccinated.

your chances of dying from covid19 if infected is many 1000s of times higher compared to being vaccinated.

so you can take your chance and hope you dont get infected or you can take the far safer option and get vaccinated

0 ( +5 / -5 )

But but but I thought all Japanese age 65 and older want the vaccine? If they all want it, why is there so many empty slots?!??

Only at a mass vaccination centre where the elderly have trouble getting to, poof is the city in Fukushima that made things so simple they Vaccinated over 80% of their elderly and are now getting everyone else Vaccinated.

There are reports of a spike in vaccine deaths in the U. S.

I am sure there are, Why? Because if there is any place in the world that will start some unfounded rumour or crazy conspiracy stuff, anti science stuff, from the moon landing, pizzagate, big pharma, to chips in Vaccine etc .. it is going to start in the USA.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

@zichi

Not done for mass vaccination centres.

Remember Tokyo is not one city but 23 cities, within those cities/wards those services exist but the mass vaccination centre is not run by the wards, my ward just started a pickup service to the vaccine centres in our ward.

The science is not complete on the vaccines.

Science is never complete on anything. We can't even agree completely what 1m means.

The chicken pox vaccine science isn't complete either, but your kids probably got it. Same for MMR.

The science around the COVID vaccines - including those with less effective protections - is in. Serious cases of COVID are almost universally prevented by taking any vaccine for at least 6 months, perhaps for the rest of your life. THAT is the science that isn't complete.

Chicken Little wasn't correct. The sky isn't falling. The dangers aren't from the vaccines. It is from COVID. Pay attention to where the risks lie, today.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

On the "Doctor" discussions... yes, there are Japanese MDs who believe that COVID Vaccination is not safe, and who are advising their Patients not to take. Only time will tell, who is right.
