Read this! The US and other countries should drop out of the Olympics due to the mismanagement by the government!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/05/04/why-is-japan-failing-so-badly-vaccinations/

Suga declared a fresh state of emergency in Tokyo and the three western prefectures, effective from April 25 through May 11. Under the state of emergency, authorities have imposed stricter anti-virus measures including requiring restaurants serving alcohol and large shopping facilities to close.

Even with this kind of emergency government reluctant to extend this.

According to data compiled by mobile carrier NTT Docomo Inc, more people were out at over 90 percent of the country's 95 key train stations and entertainment districts as of 3 p.m. Monday, compared with May 3, 2020.

Infection number will rise again after golden week.

19 ( +19 / -0 )

If Suga is confused why not have a week where 10,000 tests a day are done rather than 1,000 odd and collect privately done tests too. You know actually get some honest real time information then making his decisions based on fact rather that something he “heard”.

19 ( +19 / -0 )

People are just tired of staying home. By now, the Japanese Government should have done a better job. No vaccine for the vast majority of Japan to date. No stay at home to work demands. No real action at all. Only talk. We are all unhappy with the way things were and are being handled ~ with our tax money.

"According to data compiled by mobile carrier NTT Docomo Inc, more people were out at over 90 percent of the country's 95 key train stations and entertainment districts as of 3 p.m. Monday, compared with May 3, 2020."

@Yubaru

Thank you for the read. So, Suga was hoping that a Japanese company come up with a vaccine as was actually waiting for that to happen and it never did. So, that means that we are all in danger of getting COVID on due to nationalistic pride?

16 ( +17 / -1 )

"Why is Japan prioritizing old people for vaccinations, when the younger people need them more? It's the younger population that need to go out and work, not old people. The hypocrisy of this country is top level"

LOL. Because if a old person contracts Covid 19, the old person is more likely to die than the younger person. That is why. Every country did the same thing for the same reason.

Devastating article in the Post. Suga is cocooned away with his panels and ministers, would be nice to be a fly on the wall if the contents of this article came up.

@Darius

Is this a serious statement or are you trolling? The reason the world prioritized old people is because they have by far the highest risk of complications. Furthermore, they are more likely to be hospitalized than any other group. Meaning, hospitals will be full and less people will be able to tend to others. Especially in a country where old people comprise the majority of the population.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/05/04/why-is-japan-failing-so-badly-vaccinations/

Great article. This and another article previously posted by someone else about Japan's dodgy aid deals are truly highlighting to the world how backward this country is.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

"Under the state of emergency, authorities have imposed stricter anti-virus measures including requiring restaurants serving alcohol and large shopping facilities to close"

Just in regards to restaurants. I walk past a local McDonalds everyday in the early afternoon and it's always packed with customers. Last year people could only do takeout at fast food chains during the first SOE.

Also the first floor of large shopping centers and malls are very much open.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

That Washington Post article is quite a read.

——————-

back to JT:

Suga recognized the number of cases is not decreasing as fast as earlier expected, according to Okabe.

As fast as expected?! Everyone is working, shopping etc etc.

It’s going to take a while. It’s not a magic button. smh

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Why is Japan prioritizing old people for vaccinations,

another that deosnt liten to the science,

because elderly have the highest risk of dying during this pandemic, young have very low mortality rates.

It's the younger population that need to go out and work, not old people. The hypocrisy of this country is top level.

who do you think that built Japan into the prosperous nation it is today, out of the ashes of war, certainly wasnt the young.

the young need to show more respect to their elders and the elderly, without them they wouldnt exist, and no the elderly arent expendable, theyve done their time building this country, they cant work forever,

young conveniently forget that theyll also be elderly one day

Your attempts to smear people who don't swallow the offical narrative as "right-wing conspiracy theorists" is pretty lame.

’Not swallowing the official narrative’ does not mean you have to run to oh so predictable, straight-off-the-shelf, right wing hymn sheet hysterics with big pharma twirling their moustaches, conspirators keeping the truth about medicines from us, the walls closing in on our freedoms etc. It’s a checklist. You ticked the boxes.

It’s very funny to read the same people often complaining about people swallowing the official narrative.

yubaru:

It may be an inaccurate ‘depth of field’ issue @pukey2 10:24am. All G7 representatives are proportionally depicted here.

Anyone who was unfamiliar with Japan and just read that article would come away thinking one thing - that the Japanese are their own worst enemy.

Eisenach:

Funny that William Peask did not mention Japan low death rate.

Yesterday's data: about 60 dead and 5,000 cases in Japan, 4 dead and 2,000 cases in UK.

Previous day: about 65 dead in Japan and 1 (yes, ONE) dead in UK.

Japan's death rate is not that low if you were comparing with UK in its present state, or any other East Asian country for that matter. But yeah, Japan has a low death rate if you've got US, India or Brazil on your mind.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Most people (though certainly not all) have been complying with the SOEs and other government guidance on COVID-19. But, as the Washington Post article clearly articulates, the Government has not taken any effective action. I would even go further than the article and say that the current government is indifferent to human suffering and death.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

mismanagement by the government!"

Did you mean the US government???

No preparation after 1.3 years, and inviting 60000 worldwide people to Japan at a time of a variation explosion may seem like mismanagement for who that actually care about family and friends.

or you want herd immunity through mass infection?

LOL. Because if a old person contracts Covid 19, the old person is more likely to die than the younger person. That is why. Every country did the same thing for the same reason.

In Indonesia, the young population was primarily targeted for vax rollout. Strategies vary in line with local situations.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/13/young-people-first-indonesias-covid-vaccine-strategy-questioned

A current challenge for Japan is that there are still many unvaccinated healthcare professionals waiting in the queue. They are supposed to be the top priority group as life-savers and drivers for rollout amid the crisis.

When you've got media whipping up hysteria and fear at every opportunity, governments telling the public to do one thing and doing the opposite themselves, it only makes sense to be skepical.

Skeptical, yes. Running with right wing hymn sheet hysterics tinged with conspiracy theories, no. It’s just cut and paste.

This is as mindless as believing everything coming out of the government.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

This whole situation is a devastating mess on every level, and budding autocrats like Yoshimura are exacerbating the problems. Thanks to extreme pressure from the pharma industry on corrupt governments, cheap prophylactic drugs and early treatments have been banned and their proponents smeared in order to protect profits, enforce experimental vaccines, and usher in a Chinese-style social credit system that requires vaccine passports to participate in society

A bit hysterical. This is standard and frankly tiresome right wing hymn sheet stuff.

I think we need a more rational approach to this. Look at each situation on its own merits.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Of course you'd say that. It's your job.

If it comes a point when you have to recognize you cannot defend arguments that are easy to demonstrate as false and you have to try to attack the person doing it, maybe it is also time to reconsider why you keep holding those beliefs.

When you've got media whipping up hysteria and fear at every opportunity, governments telling the public to do one thing and doing the opposite themselves, it only makes sense to be skepical.

Being skeptical, and checking the science to see there is nothing "hysterical" about keeping reasonable care of not spreading the disease, and being science deniers and doing whatever you want to do, no matter what science can prove, are two very different things.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

can a govenor not employ their own state of emergency??

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Sick and tired of this endless mucking about with SOE’s. Still fun to go out but many places closed. It’s packed outside anyway, so the few open places are filled up.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Did you actually read it?

It is not as difficult as you think it is, the huge blanks where the statistical and epidemiological analysis of the data, and the proof of everything he "concludes" should be actually make the reading quite short. He tends to fall for every invalid judgment that actual experts have to take care in well designed studies and he controls for nothing, which makes it easy to qualify his conclusions as invalid.

I do listen to scientists and experts who support and oppose my positions, and neutral ones as well. That's why I don't deny there's a virus out there that can be harmful or deadly to SOME PEOPLE, but not the vast majority of the population, and that it's not dangerous enough to lock down states or countries or mandate mass vaccination through the back door by introducing vaccine passports for this virus.

But you cannot provide those sources? that seems much more like you selectively believe only what you think should be true and ignore the much more vast evidence that contradicts it. That explains how you think the whole scientific community must be wrong but you, based only on opinions from non-scientists must be right, (explains it, but it does not make it valid)

Search for scientific proof, a person that wants to be intellecutally honest would understand something from finding a hundred references in the best journals saying one thing and only one self published pdf saying the opposite. Social distancing measures work, proved scientifically, and that is why all institutions that have something to do support them against the pandemic, vaccines are safe and effective also. So, you can choose which one you want to do, rationally and objectively vaccinating is the best option, but if you want to keep doing the social distancing instead you are free to do it, what you are not free to do is to put others at risk.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Anyone who was unfamiliar with Japan and just read that article would come away thinking one thing - that the Japanese are their own worst enemy.

Anyone familiar with Japan already knows that the Japanese government are their own worst enemy already!

many serious patients are either at home (where a few have died), or being "treated" in hospital beds meant for mild cases (i.e. not in the ICU where they belong)?

A hospital bed meant for mild cases can be converted to ICU units.

Thanks to extreme pressure from the pharma industry on corrupt governments, cheap prophylactic drugs and early treatments have been banned and their proponents smeared in order to protect profits, enforce experimental vaccines, and usher in a Chinese-style social credit system that requires vaccine passports to participate in society.

False, the only treatments that are banned are those that have no use for COVID, and that is a reason valid enough, "pharma industry" is just an excuse science deniers use when the whole scientific and medical consensus have reached the conclusion that something is worthless, and the conspiracy is completely debunked with dirt cheap drugs like dexamethasone being recognized as effective and safe by the same consensus, something that should be impossible since it also means huge amount of profits are lost.

Vaccines are not experimental anymore, they are safe and effective and if they help replacing social distancing measures that everybody have to keep right now then it is perfectly valid to let people choose between the two options, the rational or the irrational.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

It's a matter of following both untainted scientific evidence and patterns of behavior. People are welcome to take a vaccine or not, but need to be aware of the risks and benefits at different stages of life and make their decisions accordingly.

Yes it is, and since no well recognized institution of science or medicine disagrees with the well established concept of the safety and efficacy of the vaccines that still makes it the only rational thing to do. People can choose rationally the safest option or irrationally, what people cannot do is say their irrational beliefs are sustained by science when they are so obviously not.

ou seem wedded, or at least claim to be, to the noble but unrealistic idea of incorruptible scientists diligently plodding away to save humankind from this virus.

That is only because it is your strawman, the real concept is that it is even more impossible to believe that the whole scientific and medical community represented by every institution of the planet is on a conspiracy to make money by sacrificing their friends and families with something everybody would now is not safe.

You want to cricizice how a government enacts a measure? sure, but that is not what you choose to do, you criticize the measure as useless, and that can be proven mistaken easily. Yes it is irrelevant what you think about one example if you want to characterize the scientific proved value of something.

Moreover, you attempt to smear anyone you disagree with, even professional virologists, immunologists and the like who understand the science better than you do and are willing to put their careers on the line at great personal cost to get the truth out there.

That is backwards, people that lost their careers for a wide variety of reason have nothing to do with supporting (without data) debunked ideas, they do not need to use science better than me, they have to use it better, that's it. There is a reason why the scientific community shares a general opinion about something and the unfortunate examples that you find try to go contrary without the necessary evidence to do it.

That is the main thing, I have never said my opinion is the one that contradicts them (that would be your style) what I say is that without good evidence they cannot validly contradict the scientific consensus.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

VR, I criticise measures as useless because when you A-B split test them, such as with lockdowns and mask mandates in Florida, Texas, South Dakota etc vs California, New York and North Dakota, the results show that lockdowns and mask mandates have no significant benefit, despite what the politicians and senior health bureaucrats say.

So, when you cannot find a single respected institution of the world that agrees with your opinion, you bring as an argument the opinion of a single person without scientific formation that think he can contradict them all with cherry picked data without no statistical and epidemiological analysis and that confuses between "mask use" and "mask mandate" as if they were equivalent? How about a peer reviewed scientific report? that is the minimum qualify of evidence that should be used.

Also, how come when someone tell you to listen to the scientists and experts you still keep going back on how little you trust politicians and bureaucrats? they are not the same thing. (Historians are not scientists either.)

0 ( +4 / -4 )

who do you think that built Japan into the prosperous nation it is today, out of the ashes of war, certainly wasnt the young.

Actually they were young at the time and now turned into fossil like Abe, Aso, Mori etc, destroying our economy for the last twenty years.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Good point! I am surprised how many people still believe their primary purpuse is our health. I have long thought that an important reason for these measures is simply to give people an incentive to get the vaccines. You probably noticed that the more one pushes vaccines, the more likely they are to downplay or deny the roles of vitamin D, zinc, HCQ, ivermectin...

That is the problem, people believing an illogical conspiracy theory where the medical community in general has a goal (not as a mean) vaccination. The reality is simple, people that have worker all their lives to promote and keep other people healthy and that understand the science end up also understanding that both social measures and vaccines are effective ways to prevent unnecessary deaths.

Also, your understanding is backwards, people that then to go against scientific conclusions when they are something that inconvenience them (be it climate change, effect of social measures, efficacy of masks, safety of vaccines, etc.) tend to congregate to anything that they mistakenly believe can replace those uncomfortable truths they don't agree with, scientific data is not important for these people, so even if it completely debunks their "alternatives" they will keep fixed on them just because they cannot accept the real effective and safe measures as the scientific and medical consensus do.
