The best advice I would give to Princess Mako's mother is don't go looking for problems which are not really problems, just because you obviously cannot bare to see your daughter happy. (She probably hired a private detective). The best advice I would give gto Mako's father is to be a man, stand up to your wife, and concentrate on your daughters happiness.

Her official title is ‘Mako Naishino’ 眞子内親王　so perhaps she could use Naishino as her surname?

Based on Japanese law, she will also obtain her Civil Registration (戸籍) and her surname. Her name will be "Mako Komuro" just like all other former female royal members.

I get all that, and know it as well.

However, when they register the marriage at the city office, a surname is required for both, for it to be legal.

But I guess since she is a "royal" they make exceptions!

She has been reported to refuse the payment, but it is disputed if it is legally possible for her to refuse. My guess is that the payment will be made based on the tradition and the law regardless of her wish.

No, she doesn't have a surname until she enters his family register. Royal family not even technically citizens of Japan. The 'are' Japan.

@zoroto. They are going to create a new family register in his name. Then she can apply for a passport as a commoner and leave. As she's not going to take the normal lump sum nor have the rituals of leaving the Royal Family, it is of no concern to the taxpayer other than having one person off the books.

All these things of royalty or empire are really from another time. It should be abolished.
