Hopefully this will help families of the victims to get a small degree of closure, specially because some of the victims remains may never be recovered.

It doesn't look like an ocean cruising vessel. It looks more like a lake cruiser.

It was originally built for the Seto Inland Sea, Disillusioned.

They reckon that it will take months of minute examination to be able to draw any conclusions as to what actually happened on that fateful sight-seeing journey. Amid rumors that the hull was already seen to be cracked during the winter and repairs had not been made, they will have to see why the engine stopped. Was water ingress the cause, or a later result, etc.

Condolences to all the grieving families. The sight of the Kazu I above the surface is no consultation to the avoidable loss of their loved ones but it perhaps gives them some degree of solace their families are being returned home.

It seems like it would be much more difficult to use straps to raise a sunken boat. Why not inflatable air bladders? I've seen them used for other salvage operation.

Some reports are saying that the propeller shaft inspection hatch was left open, and that let water in, then the water shifted to front of the hull, giving the boat a forward list, raising the propellers and rudder out of the water and effectively disabling the boat.

I was expecting something much bigger. They were licensed for over 60 passengers.

Now with the boat raised, I hope investigators can get to the bottom of this.

The Japanese government is also communicating with Russian authorities after two bodies, possibly of the missing, were found washed up on Kunashiri, one of four Moscow-controlled islands off Hokkaido that are at the heart of a territorial dispute with Tokyo.

It seems that jpn gov did not ask Russians for help same day when accident have happened, because of sanctions of island dispute or just because of politics?

Its not so nice at all.

Btw Kurils are part of Russia and not some Moscow controlled territory, you should inform us in correct way and should use correct narratives.

I wonder why they used a cradle when this method is less safe and time consuming waiting on the water to drain out causing fluctuation in weight distribution where lifted to the surface by the vessel Samson post would be safer and better drainage without any weight fluctuation.

In three meter seas that thing must have been bobbing around like a top.

Looks like one of those glass bottom boats for viewing sea life.

Wouldn't take much to sink in rough weather.

The boat looks generic, similar to the tourist boat that runs from near the Peace Park in Hiroshima to Miyajima, and also like the boat that runs from Kobe Airport to Osaka Kansai Airport.

Yahoo Japan article asking how, when and why the salvage company had to do the job twice, and will the government have to pay more to cover this second lift? Why also were they able to do it so quickly and efficiently with robots the second time. The tone of the article is highly critical and suggests sloppy, careless work by the salvage company.

The coast guard intends to launch a full-fledged investigation into the cause of the accident at the port of Abashiri, hoping to find clues about the fate of the 12 people unaccounted for.

The reasons are already crystal clear, criminal negligence from the operator of the boat and a failure of the authorities to enforce proper safety rules to the companies doing this business.

Unfortunately I expect all the blame to be shifted to the operator without anything being done to solve the other half of the cause.

Just read an article suggesting there were three possibilities of water ingress. (Apart from the propellor shaft hatch being left open, mentioned by a poster recently.)

The forward hatch cover seems to have been missing and boarded over. Did the front store locker fill with water?

Did rough vibrations and banging on the choppy seas aggravate and open up pre-existing cracks in the hull?

Were windows broken by large waves?

Initial reports from the crew were that the boat was taking on water forward which seems to correspond to some kind of failure of that boarded over forward hatch cover.

It can't look like a cruise ship. I think it looks a ship which lake ship. I don't know that it went to the Shiretoko peninsula offing. But I feel relieved because Kazuone was discovered.

I don't know that it went to the Shiretoko peninsula offing. But I heard in the news that Kazwan was submerged at a depth of 182 meters, it was lifted above the surface on May 26 and was relieved to hear that. Now that Kazwan has been pulled up and the investigation is about to begin, I don't know why this happened. And It is rumored that the cause of the accident was a man-made disaster. Experts said that the investigation would be difficult due to problems such as departure in bad weather and GPS malfunctions, and the damage to the hull.
