Why does the Shinkansen stop during a Typhoon?

So they don't derail. You know, prevention of accident.

“Another storm in a teacup”

Re: “Elaborate please” comment.

To elaborate for the commenter, I’d assume they mean another hyped up typhoon event, the likes of which have almost never amounted to much over the past 60 years. There were a couple scary ones about five years ago, one of which caused big problems for Kansai International Airport, but no comparison to those old time Japan. Basically, typhoons in modern day Japan are hugely over-hyped, and are something to get excited about for people who need something to get excited about.

I wonder how it's going on Oosaka?

I’m in the center of Osaka (nearer to the north than places like Namba), and it’s been relatively calm. I was out walking in the drizzle between 7:00 and 8:00, and it was windy but nothing dramatic.

Still, the light rain is incessant and won’t stop until tomorrow morning, so I worry about people at the foot of mountains. Again, hoping for no bad news in the morning.

It had an atmospheric pressure of 985 hectopascals with winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour.

Seems Tokyo has gotten away with some mild but humid weather.

I wonder how it's going on Oosaka?

The storm is passing in South Hyogo/Kobe. Opened my shutters again. Better prepared than not.

Wallace

Less intense than expected.

Yes. And the worst of it appears to be over. Rain and moderate winds now. I think we may have had more severe rain in Kansai during this year's rainy season.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Just rain here. Drove about 100km this morning. Apart from big puddles, only 20% cars. It was great.

Wallace:

Great post. This seems to be a slow-moving typhoon, so it’s dumping a massive amount of rain in a relatively short time. More than the wind, the amount of precipitation is, I think, the biggest worry.

I hope people are following the advice of the authorities and getting out of landslide-prone areas.

Hoping for no bad news tomorrow.

Less intense than expected.

Yes, and I’m glad for it. It’s brought the temperature down, but, of course, it’s also brought the humidity way up.

Only saw a handful of people on my morning walk in central Osaka (while the rain was just a drizzle), and none on bicycles.

Hope it continues like this, but the rain may cause problems for the people in the mountainous areas. Hope everyone stays safe.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

Still all quiet here in Tokyo……

That’s because it ain’t anywhere near Kansai or Korea, where whatever’s left of the storm will head to next.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Be strong Japan!!..

Everybody be safe..

You probably don’t have to worry about that as they’re still on summer holidays.

Indeed. The whole country is in Obon shut down too. It's quite obvious if you live here you see.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

I hope he children can say at home today, I’m worried about them travelling to school in this, many go by bicycle you see.

The shutters have been shaking for much of the night, and are getting worse this morning. Stuff in the yard and around the house seem secure so far.

I see on the news that there are already power outages in Osaka and Kyoto prefs. I hope we don't get hit. OTOH, if we do, maybe my wife will finally let me buy a generator. Or , better yet, a new PHEV.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

So..you think there's somehow less typhoons ?

Guessing it might be a bit early for you, but maybe re read what I wrote.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

In our location, we have the speaker warning system and the evacuation centers are up and running.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

My house is secure. Everything outside is put away or tied down. Strong wind and rain now and will increase later in the day.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Hey, there's a typhoon coming, let's go to the ocean and watch the waves...great photo, happens all the time, idiots come out of the woodwork.

5 ( +14 / -9 )

Look forward to seeing the over analysis on NHK.

8 ( +15 / -7 )

Still all quiet here in Tokyo the calm before the storm.

-13 ( +4 / -17 )

Climate change is making typhoons worse. Downvote if you like, the truth doesn’t care about a thumbs down on a comments page!

Climate change doesn't really need to mean that it's getting worse everywhere, changes to water temperature and currents etc can change the paths that typhoons take and make some areas less affected. When I first came to Kansai in 2004 I remember we got multiple days off from school every year because of typhoons. Now days there is barely one every year that causes people to have to stay home from work and school in the Kansai area.

Typhoon 7 is already impacting western Japan

It is shaking the house right now with strong gusting winds

NHK is warning residents to stay clear of windows and keep curtains drawn due to the dangers of them being blown out by strong wind!
