Why anyone would ride a bicycle during a typhoon is beyond me. But i hope they recovered and everyone stay safe.

I hope everyone stays safe, esp the elderly who live alone and have nobody to look after them, they're the most vulnerable.

Why would someone go out during a typhoon let alone go out on a bicycle?!! Surely, concessions can be made for work or whatnot. It's not worth risking your life for.

Debians, yes it depends on where I’m the world.

It passed close-by here, but it was a non-event. Luckily Japan Today only reported it well after the excitement was over.

The main news seems to be endless detailed warnings on how to be prepared, as if they might be blamed later for not alerting everyone.

Japan didn't get "pounded".

It got wind and rain as it does every year since creation.

Technically, it is now an extra-tropical storm, per the international definition. But JMA does use the wording of typhon for one rank down tropical depression. It sounds more scarier than it is. Now, it is merely a low pressure system, the pressure being already up to 1000hPa.

This is bordering on fake news with a headline like that. Clickbait at best. I live here in Fukuoka, near the coast, where the center passed over. It was a total non-event, as in barely even windy and light rain. A few gusts came through but it was actually downgraded to a tropical depression before it came close. Even today it's cloudy, not a hallmark sign of a raging typhoon.

Reminded me of living in Saipan. We had, maybe, two "banana" typhoons of 100mpg or less a year. Just enough to knock over banana trees and take of the corrugated aluminum roofs off of the "ranch" houses that enabled them to collect Red Cross money. About every 6-10 years a really big one, maybe 180mph or more hit or skimmed the island. Crazy what that kind of wind does with ocean currents. Anyway, no problem with this one in Yokohama. Just a little heavy rain at times. It's fine, now.

A small eternity ago, when I was in Japan for the first time ever, I actually went out to cycle whenever there was a typhoon. Since there are no typhoons/hurricanes where I'm from, I didn't understand how dangerous they can be. I just really enjoyed the wind and the buckets of warm water pouring over me - it was exhilarating. I'd cycle on the empty streets and just feel the wind and the rain. I've come to understand the different perils that come with typhoons since then (and grown up to be a relatively different person anyways), and wouldn't do the same anymore. I still get a kick out of the (more milder) winds, rain and the scent though, and enjoy it up to a certain point on my balcony.

The center of the storm, downgraded to TD by that time, passed right over us. It was traveling so fast that its forward speed, which made it look still powerful, made the wind speed number misleading. All we felt was a fresh breeze when it was still supposed to have 25 knot winds. I guess people were not so lucky out west.

I wish they wouldn't use the blanket term typhoon for tropical storms and depressions. They scare people senselessly when it's rather not that powerful. I was right in the middle of it last night.
