Kishida told reporters that Tokyo has lodged a protest against Moscow, adding that it is impossible for Japan to carry out the exchange program with Russia under such circumstances.

what exchange program? Japan is still closed

I'll say it: We are basically in the first stage of war against Russia, so it makes sense.

@tora the millions of used cars sent to Russia on a record scale and the joint gas project says otherwise you doomsdayer.

"I wonder how many times we have to get pushed around," Furubayashi, 83, who currently lives in Nemuro in eastern Hokkaido, said after returning from fishing early in the morning.

Ah the Japanese mindset - expecting the world to welcome them with open arms, on their terms - when this is challenged, when reciprocal arrangements are in place, when they are affected - it all ends in tears. All the while expecting non Japanese to simply just put up with the same treatment.

Japan will have to reciprocate with a campaign for group tours to Okinawa!

Japan needs to act the way the Japanese normally act and that is to not get involved. Japan is dragged in by the US and are only involved with Russia because of the US, The US is making a big mess in Europe, NATO and Ukraine. Russia cuts of gas supplies to Europe indefinitely.

Russia claims punitive economic sanctions imposed on it by the West are responsible for the indefinite halt to gas supplies via Europe's main pipeline.

"Problems in pumping arose because of the sanctions imposed against our country and against a number of companies by Western states, including Germany and the U.K.," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, according to Russian state news agency Interfax.

Let Japan be.

Who in their right mind would go to russia in the FIRST place ?

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Tit for tat.

Good.

Who in their right mind would go to russia in the FIRST place ?

the largest country in the world, it is a nature lovers paradise. The culture, the history, the arts, literature, ethnic diversity are good reasons. Just don’t go for the food.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

wait.

who imposed meaningless sanctions?

Russia against Japan?

or Japan against Russia?

one more question-did you expect that there will be no consequences and Russia will just sit, play dumb and will do...nothing?

if you believe so you must be very naive...

There's no reason it should be reciprocal in the first place. Russians have no historical ties to Hokkaido.

"Later Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned Russia's action, saying it is "totally unacceptable.""

Not so easy to play both sides, is it, Kishida?

There are Japanese families who have graves there.

. Just don’t go for the food.

The cheese!. To die for.

Like Thailand made tourist visits from India possible, Japan should do the same for the sun starved Russians down to Okinawa

Okinawa in winter-just don’t mention the bases!

Hopefully the two nations will work out a better arrangement . . . as Japan definitely appears to have historical roots to the islands, and the islands are not in Russia’s historical sphere of influence. . . Japan has more historically had roots to China, Russia having it’s historical roots closer to Europe . . . .

very good news, Japanese need to apply for visa to enter sovereign Russian territory.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

It's Japan’s fault for trying to appease their American overlords by sanctioning Russia for a war nobody cares about anymore, at least here.

Yawn here we go again. It's Russian actions causing pain for everyone, if they hadn't invaded, there would be no sanctions.

OK Once again if going to discuss russian "agression" need to start talk about reasons, not talk about consequences,.Got it right buddy.

If you truly believe the sanctions aren't and won't hurt Russia, you obviously don't know anyone living there and solely rely on Russian produced news.-I have same feeling about you buddy.you have no idea about Russians and Russia whatsoever.

I wonder how it feels to be Putin's sock puppets after all the war crimes committed in Ukraine.

Sorry for the old folks who want to visit their old hometowns or graves of their families on the islands, but keeping Russia out is job #1.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

So they will have to apply for visas to enter the country of Russia.

Just like foreigners have to do to enter Japan.

No double standards eh ?

Yeah, remember how the Japanese government denied entry to Permanent Residents - who had every right to be here and to be granted entry - for most of the early months of Covid, while letting Japanese citizens come and go as they want?

Karma.

Neither Japan Nor Russia can handle a conflict or a cold war, I am hopping the cool heads will prevail so people can go on with their lives not having to worry about who did what and when. We the people are sick and tired lockdowns, wars, and conflicts , the time has come to just live and let live Japan.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Russia attacked Ukraine and the next thing I know is that Mr. kishida is leading a world wide effort to punish Russia and sanction it, could have waited a little more till the EU and others who are mostly effected by the invasion to take action, but for some reasons that I still can't figure out Japan decided to take the lead!??? Putin is not going to just kick back and watch, judging by what he has done in other parts of the world we can expect problems in the future.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

good on Russia! Japan should stop kissing the US ring!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

So theyre basically rubbing on Japan's nose that they fully control the islands
