Maria; Unfortunately this is not just the flu.

@Kobe; I agree this virus is quite aggressive and I also think all China flights should be halted until this is under control. On the other hand I don’t think the ship is a good representation of the virus’ R0 due to the inherent ability of the ship’s ability to spread the virus (I.e. through the HVAC system).

I do think this is very highly contagious based on the unprecedented and intense response by authorities in China now.

I wish the CCP would have listened to the heroic Dr. Li instead of threatening to arrest him.

with this ship being a great example of how this virus spreads surly we can conclude the R0 if much higher than say the flu and use this as evidence to validate stopping flights from China finally???

Cruiser ships are one of the worst environments for outbreaks, people are in much closer contact than in land and it very common to have outbreak of respiratory illness, case reports with dozens and dozens of cases of influenza on a single ship are easy to find, so this is not surprising at all nor it indicates any specially high levels of transmissibility.

It is expected that the numbers will rise on board considering the closed environment of the ship. What Japan is not telling us is the situation on land. There are no updates on the initial 20 or so people that were infected on land.

Fatima - I would like to know the status of the people on the flight back to Japan where there were 2 verified infections. This would be very valuable information in determining what risk reduction measures should be taken by average folks like me (i.e. what is the real risk on an airplane). The risk on a plane would be closer to the risk in public than what a ship presents.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

correction, I meant the initial cases on land.

Japan total is 96

70 from the Diamond Princess, 26 (balance) on land. So discounting tge ship, 26 is relatively stable compared to say Hong Kong (36), or Singapore (43) where many Chinese mainlanders owns 2nd house.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

What is that number since no news is being reported since 10? What are their chances or status, recovered, near death? Those on the ship can continue to stay there. This number was originally 7 about 1 week ago and has jumped dramatically.

If you count of the ones on the cruise hip and back from Wuhan, which accounts for a total of 80 (70+10), there are 16 cases left , among them 3 are locally infected patients. The first infected locally, the bus driver from Naha, is getting better and it was announced he should leave the hospital soon.

It has been on the J- news and the Ministry of Health website keeps a good update.

Singapore had many local infections and is of a worry.

Count is actually 26 in Japan. WHO categorizes shipboard diagnosis (Hong Kong, Japan) in its own category and not assigned to a country's totals.

I'm surprised that there's been no information on yesterday's 26th case in Japan in the media yet, after 5 days with no new case. All we know (from the WHO statistics) is that its a person that had China travel history

The 26th case is a Japanese evacuee straight back from Wuhan.

I didn't say it was the flu; just observing that there such measures are not taken for each new strain of the flu (for which there are never vaccines up front, and which does kill hundreds - thousands globally surely?) annually.

It is my understanding that any passengers who are infected, taken to hospitals, and then recover are to be put back on the ship immediately. Are they really that scared of foreigners?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Tokyo-engnr, yes that too. I think the spread on land has to be kept an eye on and the public updated.

Great point by someone posting exposed to coronavirus within Japan on land. What is that number since no news is being reported since 10? What are their chances or status, recovered, near death? Those on the ship can continue to stay there. This number was originally 7 about 1 week ago and has jumped dramatically.

can you give us the link to the Ministry of health because the one I am looking at has nothing about coronavirus.

The two strains of flu making the rounds in the US have a mortality rate of 0.015%, and yet 12,000 people have so far died in this country. The strain of coronavirus that is of so much concern has a mortality rate in excess of 2%. If the flu a and flu b in The States had mortality rates of 2+%, the number of fatalities would have been in the millions.

Gogo; Good question....Glad I don’t have to make that decision!!

If the ship's hvac was turned off and taped off then the spread of the virus would have been lessened. The best approach would have been to remove all passengers and crew and put them into a confined land based medical facility on inital detection of the virus and sanitize the ship.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Saw on the news this morning that the cruise company issued letters to the passengers that stated their money would be returned.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Since they take the sick off the ship that have the virus for hospital stays quarantined (Where?),

They are spread over hospitals in 5 prefectures.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

60 more passengers confirmed infected today.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Since they keep on resetting the clock and considering there are many people on the ship, does it mean the ship might be docked at Yokohama with the passengers for a very long time since there are new cases daily?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

That conflicts with everything I’ve seen. Please tell us what you based that figure on.

@ Educator- I'm guessing 3Rensho based that figure on news. Probably best to stay updated a bit more. This figure is going to go way higher.

The situation is not yet under control...what will tomorrow bring?

@ Tokyo

you raise a good point. Just finished reading this thought it may be of interest.

Quite obviously a highly infectious disease.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

here is one update, the first group of evacuees from Wuhan who have tested negative are to be released on Wednesday.

Resetting the 14 days quarantine everyday a new case is found?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Since they take the sick off the ship that have the virus for hospital stays quarantined (Where?), then soon enough the ship will be empty.

Who will bring the ship back to port?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Recurring infection?

The passengers are isolated I would presume.

How is it that new cases are occurring ?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Various countries have flown their citizens out of China, to be quarantined in their native countries. Why not do that with the passengers and crew of the Diamond Princess?

I thought deaths were always fatal.

I didn't say it was the flu; just observing that there such measures are not taken for each new strain of the flu (for which there are never vaccines up front, and which does kill hundreds - thousands globally surely?) annually.

The measures taken towards any new strain are a function of the extent of infection spread and deaths in terms of time and geography. The current 2019-nCoV has called for the current measures.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

You know, if countries were this aggressive about every new strain of the flu, nobody would be able to go anywhere.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Exactly, Hawkeye. The ship's HVAC was not made for preventing the spread of infection, but rather is doing exactly opposite that. It's like Ophrah giving away cars.

"Infection for YOU! And infection for YOU!"

At the end of the 2 weeks on this ship, just about everyone will be carrying. Plenty will go home declared "safe" but will develop symptoms and spread the virus.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

No vaccine for a year or longer, it is said

However, Japan seems to be avoiding fatal deaths...

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

@You know, if countries were this aggressive about every new strain of the flu, nobody would be able to go anywhere.

This is not about aggressive countries are taken steps but rather the rapid expanse and transformation of this virus that has no vaccine at this time. It is only able to be cured by current medicines if caught in time and depending on the condition of the infected individuals immune system. Aside that well its lights out. A country who has taken such steps is only doing what it can to protect its citizens. IF that is the case the choice is risk that 1 life we all have for the sake of traveling anywhere or live to see the day when we can travel once a vaccine is available. Keep in mind this virus is man-made enhance and as such getting smarter and smatter as it makes its way across the planet. The real purpose of this virus was purely made for bio terror, nothing short of that, else the old adage if its not broken why fix it, meaning it was harming no one in its contained state, why mess around with it in a lab with lax protocols. What was the real purpose behind it as no country had issues with it in the first place. Surely not the flu. There are plenty of vaccines for that these days.
