Wow 86%, yet so quiet and obedient.

Perfectly correct.

Absolutely, it has already started with the Uganda team. Finding one player positive and turned that player away, and allowing the remaining members just to jump on the bus without quarantining them for 2 weeks. WOW! How many more cases are going to happen like this, especially from the developing countries and it is my guess OODLES!

Are you actually it started with the Uganda delegation? No covid here up until then?

So is the plan to ignore all the covid waves in Japan up until now?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And they judge 86% percent of people in Japan by just calling 2,000 people?

That is one of the best morning jokes.

Day's ending and still best joke so far for the day =)

Did the article even say what question the poll ask?

So easy to fool people

With fewer than 7% of residents fully vaccinated in Japan, there would seem to be reasonable grounds for fearing the result of allowing the Olympics to draw crowds.

On the other hand, if the Olympics are watched remotely, that would seem to be the safer alternative.

Rebound or no rebound, PM Suga just committed political suicide in order to save face. I wonder what the IOC boys promised him in residuals over the upcoming decade.

He has to know that his decision to hold the Games means a snap election that will have him home in Akita by the rice harvest.

With those IOC residuals, don't be surprised to see a new fleet of tractors at the Suga Strawberry Farm up in Yuzawa.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We didn't have any vaccines last year. We have them now.

Well, 7% of the population does.

Not nearly enough to prevent a rebound.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The last commenter misses the point. The IOC is not responsible for the sports development amongst nations, that is up to individual governments. Life will never be equal sadly but the games is a sporting event. The IOC is responsible for ensuring equality between competitors during the events. It’s the same with richer football clubs, but people enjoy to see the underdog having a go.

I guess whatever the IOC do, some will never be happy and find things to complain about

86% fear COVID rebound if Tokyo Olympics held: poll

The rebound will be because the SOE is lifted and not because of the Olympics.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I so love the joke "the Olympics are needed to lift spirits" " needed for the wellbeing of mankind" etc...

Here is a reality check.

They are the games for the RICH and powerful plain and simple.

The last Olympics the top 10 countries took home over half the gold, the same 10 took home half the silver and bronze.

The next 10 countries all first world took home well over half the remaining medals.

There are 205 Nations and dependencies at the games and 20 rich and powerful countries take home nearly all the medals.

These are the countries that finance their teams, with government money sponsors money, the best equipment, coaches, etc..

The rest have near zero chance training with donated outdated equipment, no budget or money, etc...

We could remove 180 countries and dependencies from the games and the competition and medal count wouldn't be much different.

That is how big a joke these games are.

@Vrath - Again Somebody who doesn't read the news. It will NOT be postponed again and the Olympic Cycle will not be reset. Why do people keep on suggesting this. It's been ruled out for better or for worse.

Just a second....Is my understanding of this article correct?

The two-day nationwide survey...

The telephone survey covering about 2,000 people...

With less than 1100 responding.

The survey, covering 673 randomly selected households with eligible voters and 1,357 mobile phone numbers, obtained responses from 548 and 547 people, respectively.

Delta variant unto an elderly population with 7% vaccination. An ambulance lotterly to do its best to help the virus spread around to every hospital. The subway system with volunteers and officials moving back and forth.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

FFS:

Thank you for your answer.

I do not believe, however, that the Games are “important for the wellbeing of mankind”. If anything, for some people, the event will be a distraction from the real world for a handful of weeks.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

But it will be a rebound of cases, which aren't as deadly in summer.

(I work/ed part time in a hospital and my partner is a doctor.)

In July, August, almost all hospitals are overcapacity due to heat attack and it can take up to 6-8 hours for, in severe cases an ambulance to find an accepting hospital.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Let’s start suing Koike and Suga. All medical experts have told them. Should be an open and shut manslaghter case.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

blvtzpk

covid was unforeseen, the work being done to ensure safety is admirable.

I do understand the importance of the games fully having, friends and associates involved in the day to day running of many sports, not just athletics but tennis and football. Sports are essential to mankind, the Euros are going well without the fear mongering we have here. The measures being taken are unprecedented, the games will be the safest ever, I have been assured of that by people I trust.

Maybe if you give the games a chance you will embrace the spirit of them and understand their importance and dare I say, even enjoy them and become a fan.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Anyway, they are going ahead as planned

Correct, but the plan now is all about controlling the spread of Covid, nothing at all like the original plan for 2020.

and public sentiment already now in favour will be the strong majority soon.

Dream on. You still believe that sufficient amounts of ‘The Games will be 100% safe - Mr Coates has said so’ propaganda will change people’s minds?

more than likely they are those averse to exercise and lack the understanding of the importance of the games worldwide.

More insults aimed at people who don’t agree with you.

And what is “the importance of the games worldwide”? I think you place far too much importance on this truism.

I doubt if, when asked, you could tell us the two people who won the last Marathon - or a number of gold medalists from 2016 - without having to look it up.

You’ve criticized ‘bread and circuses’ exercises in the past. The Tokyo 2020 (2021?) Olympics are definitely a case of that.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Unfortunately we find ourselves in a situation where many people are uninformed and make a decision without knowing the true facts. At least only a third want the games cancelled, more than likely they are those averse to exercise and lack the understanding of the importance of the games worldwide.

Anyway, they are going ahead as planned and public sentiment already now in favour will be the strong majority soon.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

The more frightening things is, if or when there is a sharp rise in cases happens, where is the money going to come from.

Government auditors already suspect the cost of the games is over twice the $15 US billion claimed ( we may never fully know until much later) as it is the official direct losses are already at $ 4.4 US billion for the Tokyo government it is highly likely that this to is also actually double, we are looking at $ 8~10 US billion debt that the people of Tokyo will have to pay off.

To put that into perspective 1976 Olympics in Montreal one of the worst financial disasters in Olympics history was $ 1.6 CND Billion took a special tax and 30 years to pay off.

So take the probable massive debt add in the economic losses from the pandemic up until now, then add in another major surge in cases and we can see things will be far worse as cost cutting affects hospitals, testing, treatment, help for individuals and businesses, etc...

Any surge even a small one after the Olympics will be the final nail in the economy's coffin.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

'IF' They are held? Why oh why the continued debates about possible cancellation.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Don’t worry… Suga will hold a snap election before the effects have sunk in and say “We could not have known, but vow to move forward in beating the virus!”

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Interesting but I would also like to see a poll on whether the Japanese believe the government's covid case numbers!

My extended Japanese family ( and it is very large due to our situation) all are expecting a surge after the Olympics but also all think the government's testing numbers have been low and the number of cases in Japan are already far higher than claimed.

Yesterday here and every other Japanese Media made a point about the Ugandan team member testing positive and that the official numbers of covid cases in Uganda were suspect because Uganda testing is low but all ignore the fact that Japan's numbers and testing are also extremely low.

So why does Uganda's low testing make their number of cases suspect but the same doesn't apply to Japan?

My wife, her siblings, mother ( a healthcare worker), ex-wife, her siblings and parents, uncles aunts, grandparents, etc.. from all the families not only expect a rebound but also suspect that we are still in a serious situation only without testing the official numbers are not telling the real story.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Any indication on the ages of the people they asked? Nah, didn't think so. A survey that gives the desired response.

Just be afraid, take your jabs, be quiet and pay your taxes.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Apparently some of the people here did not take statistic in College, do not understand the concept of randomized sampling or the standard deviation in making judgments about a very large population based on a sample.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

We had a rebound last year without the Olympics, so no reason why we shouldn't get another one this year.

But it will be a rebound of cases, which aren't as deadly in summer.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

What you fear eventually comes true.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

86% sounds about right.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

Now, there is a Super Delta variant. Things may get worse before they get better. I have decided to take the shot. This pandemic is more serious than a year and a half ago. What scientist fear most is if the virus mutates to the point where our vaccines cannot stop this killer, we are doomed to fight a virus that we cannot stop.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

The rebound will have nothing to do with the Olympics. That’s an easy escape to blame the games.

The rebound will be due to locals going back to izakyas and partying

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

To say 86 percent of people in Japan are concerned by just calling 2000 people is giving a false image and can be missinterpreted.

2000 people is plenty. It's the randomness of the poll that determines accuracy, not more numbers.

It makes a lot of sense to believe 86% is an accurate number, within a +/- of 3% error. Do you just want this to be wrong as a narrative being against vaccination, masks and believing COVID will increase because of the Olympics?

Seems so, because the lack of vaccination here along with the push for the Olympics go hand in hand, and Japan is playing with fire. Little doubt the Olympics is a super spreader type event. It's been obvious for a long time the priority is the money of the Olympics over the safety of the people.

But then, Japan is a country who would sacrifice its own people in a desire to be right about a wrong.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Nationwide 2,000 people??? Among 124,000,000???

And they judge 86% percent of people in Japan by just calling 2,000 people?

Yes, because statistically this is considered to be more than enough, calling 2000 people would mean that 99% of the time the answers would be as reported plus/minus a 3%.

So yes, it is scientifically valid to say this sample represents the opinion of the country's population.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

2000 people is more than enough for japan. Everyone here thinks pretty much in exactly the same way, you survey 100 people and you’d be pretty accurate I think

16 ( +18 / -2 )

I am more concerned that now 44% of people feel that the Suga cabinet is doing a good job, up frim 41% recently. What the hell has he done. Nothing! If it wasn't for companies stepping up, we wouldn't have any vaccinations whatsoever. Of course this means that right after the "successful" Olympics there is going to be an election and the LDP will retain power again!

15 ( +17 / -2 )

@letsberealistic

You can not say in an article 86 percent of people in Japan are concerned if you just call 2000 people.

If this is a normal amout for a survey or democraphic related doesnt count here.

To say 86 percent of people in Japan are concerned by just calling 2000 people is giving a false image and can be missinterpreted.

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

After the Olympics there will be a HUGE spike in COVID cases. However two things will happen. The Japanese gov't will downplay the increase, and they will do very limited testing.

The government will be eventually forced into mass testing, at which time the government there will not accept responsibility for the COVID outbreak and will instead place the blame on foreigners that THEY allowed to come into the country.

15 ( +22 / -7 )

-14 ( +13 / -27 )

Foregone conclusion. The researchers and the docs have already said that there will be one because of the delta variant and the lack of vaccinations. The question is the severity and how much stress it will place on the hospitals. Thank you to the games.

20 ( +24 / -4 )

86% will be ignored. Just keep silent, keep paying for it (through your taxes) and carry on like well controlled masses, nothing to see here.

24 ( +27 / -3 )

I don't fear a rebound. I know there will be one.
