spinning plates. I think that n1k1's question was rhetorical

n1k1. Sympathy for you an awful situation to be in. I love visiting Japan and can't wait to be there again once it's safe, but being there during a pandemic would be a whole other story. Be strong, stay safe

In venturing out, there is no reason to maintain a hermit like existence.

Just rigidly follow three important conduct/rules

1) Maintain physical distance from other people.

2) Wear a mask.

3) Wash your hands.

How many dead? 177,100 .Unacceptable.

I wonder what would be an acceptable number

That's the question every politician has to figure out. And a question I wouldn't want to have to act upon.

So I have great sympathy for both koike asking people to stay home to save lifes from the coronavirus and Nishimura asking people to go out sensibly to protect the economy and in turn lifes

Personally it's illogical to say every death is the same.

When a child dies it is an unimaginable tragidy, when a person dies at 90 years old, its painful but we say at least they had a long life.

It goes without saying I hope no one dies but at the same time we have to ask honestly to what lengths we as a society should go to protect each age group.

My own view is currently 2,3 deaths of those over 80 as is the current trend in the cold heart of day doesn't justify a lockdown. Although I have great sympathy for their families.

However if the situation were to change and it becomes 1 child or young people a day dying I will be first to call for a lockdown.

Well that's easy.

It is not easy at all ! People, family, friends will die due to complications from COVID19 just like they die from strokes and heart attacks.

And if you want to blame the government, fine. I just don't think that beyond and urging the public for personal protection and hygiene there is much meaningful they can do around the infections.

As for medical care I think Japan is all right, intellect and gear.

@spiningplates can I also ask how many world deaths are acceptable to test the vaccines while we are locked-down?

You do realize vaccine development needs infections don't you ?

I am not sure I understand the question.

due to Government inaction and general disbelief ? as in wars you mean ?

Also if you can please be more specific about the Government ? Is it all Governments in general, just Japan or perhaps treat China, US, UK, Brazil, Italy etc as contributing factors ?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Go ahead n1k1Today, tell us how many of your family and friends you would consider 'acceptable' to lose due to Government inaction and general disbelief.

Could try the official helplines in Tokyo. Don't know how useful they are.

Just stay away from MSM and you will be fine, they want to scare everyone.

Well now we have about one death every second day, at this rate it would take about 1000 years to reach 177,100 deaths...

Where can a foreigner who lives here alone and feels scared turn for help?

I would go for embassy first.

Of course if you feel ready to trust the Japanese medical professionals this is a good choice too. Any local hospital will give you the referral letter.

Excellent advice. I live in a relatively rural part of Aichi (by Japanese standards it is 田舎) and I personally took a PCR test at a local hospital following several days of low-grade fever in early June. I received a negative result via phone call around 24 hours later from the local cities public health office, and in perfect English I might add. The process was very easy, although I would recommend asking a Japanese speaking friend to accompany you if your ability isn't great.

The article says "corona virus" but not Covid 19. There is a difference as Covid 19 is the one and only strain of corona we are worrying about.

I think it is fair to assume 'coronavirus cases' on the article refers to covid-19 positive results.

Also its worth pointing out that there are no deaths since I don't know when and the number of serious/critical cases is only 66 right now.

There was one death on 22 July 2020 in Aichi. This was the first death in the prefecture since May. It's worth noting that he was confirmed positive post-mortem testing and his death attributed to covid-19:

https://www.ctv.co.jp/news/articles/sljy0h2fle14mu59.html

I am unsure where the figure of 66 serious cases comes from, although I note that the sources I could find have not been updated for today so perhaps the number has increased from 21 in Tokyo and 59 nationally, respectively:

https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

I will note that the definition of 'serious' is 'requiring use of a ventilator or in the ICU' in Tokyo. As the second site notes, the national figures are aggregate and different prefectures may define serious different, although the Tokyo definition was ubiquitous through to May 7. It is worth noting that while Tokyo has around 2400 beds now available for hospitalizations, it has only 100 beds available for serious patients [ https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/ ] . I would guess (despite lack of medical training) that there are a number of cases of significant illness which do not reach that definition of serious

From this article: "While the central government acknowledged the growing number of infections, it maintained that the situation did not warrant another state of emergency." Prime Minister Abe declared: ""We are not in a situation to reimpose a state of emergency,"

If you look at the gory daily statistics of new coronavirus infections it is as plain as day that a renewed state of emergency is absolutely necessary. It necessary right now. It was obvious for some time.

We have been told that the infects are coming from the water business sections of cities, as well as restaurants, theaters and the like. It is likely coming from overcrowded trains, stuffed offices and crowed classrooms.

We don't exactly know. And what we don't know has the potential of killing us.

We are already in a state of emergency. Let it be declared.

Good!

Let's keep the infections going as we build herd immunity. The death rate remains low, about one death every 2nd day (on average).

Health care professionals with decades of working on public health say it is not good, I know which of these two opposite opinions are worth listening to.

“People here are only happy when the numbers are very high.“

We’re not. But most of us have known for months that the actual numbers are WAY higher than what’s being reported, and we are skeptical of the gov’s actions/non actions.

Thats not how herd immunity works. Let me break it down.

Let's say we need 70% (instead of 90%) of people to have antibodies (which we don't know yet if antibodies last) to achieve heard immunity. With 126.5 million people, that would require 88,550,000 infections.

(Now let's set aside the long term organ damage the virus causes and how negatively that would effect the economy for a few generations).

Now let's also put aside the fact that 3% of cases in Japan were fatal. Let's drop the mortality rate to 0.2%.

How many dead? 177,100

Unacceptable.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

I dont know, but it seems that everyone here hope and wish that the numbers will increase until wherever.

People here are only happy when the numbers are very high.

That is so strange!

Why can you guys not be satisfied that todays numbers are lower than yesterday?

I don't think the daily figure means a great deal, especially on a weekend or holiday. Perhaps Abe or Koike could show us how effective they are as leaders by urging the number lower when they go back to work next week.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

At this point, people can just go to statistics pages too see how many people tested positive.

Must be a slow day for journalist

And tomorrow will be less.

(Holidays/less people to check the fax machine).
