Only 60klm away from the nearest nuclear power plant. What a great idea it was to build nuclear power plants in a volcanically active country that sits on the cusp of 3 tectonic plates.

That is one heck of a picture!

Volcanism and earthquakes are activating again in Pacific Rim.

before "311",

Many mainstream media of Japan have emphasized next threat and danger of tsunami, earthquake or volcanoes but do not mention risk of next nuclear disaster.

Was hoping to visit Kagoshima during the middle of next month. Starting to think that isn’t such a good idea.

Thankfully this eruption is in a relatively sparsely populated area of Japan.

Nice photograph.

Wonder what's going to happen if Mt Fujii does the same ?

Wolfpack, go to Kagoshima. Shinmoedake is quite far north of the city. A far greater worry for Kagoshima City is Sakurajima. Rent a car and drive closer to get some photos.

Worth visiting Sakurajima, if it's not busy kicking off, which it does on a regular basis. Nothing too big, yet, fingers crossed.

And Kagoshima (and nearby Satsuma) is a great town, come the good weather.

I wonder how long unit Mt, Rainier does this? Mt Rainier erupts every 500 - 1000 years, it's been 1024 years since it's last eruption...

You do realize that Mt. Shimmoe doesn't occupy the entirety of Kagoshima, correct?
