Was thinking the same... I suspect their periodic announcement of finding leaks are just intentional dumping to get rid of mounting contaminated water.

Finally some good news. Once they get that working, things look better.

I suspect their periodic announcement of finding leaks are just intentional dumping to get rid of mounting contaminated water.

The amount of the leaks is so insignificantly small compared to the amount being stored that this idea is ludicrous.

Water decontamination, ice walls, robots -- all sounds like bad science fiction. But, unfortunately, it is the reality of the next couple of decades at least for TEPCO and Japan. And at the cost of trillions of yen to the consumers/tax payers.

The title is misleading. There're 2 systems working in paralell.

Fukushima = Sisyphus myth!

Fukushima is all done!!! From the mountain to the ocean, there is radiation all over the place. And who do we have to blame for this.... All of the Japanese bureaucrats and governmental people thats lies all day long.

And this statement is not off topic, so if it is removed, then you do not understand what the true meaning of off topic is!!!!

Get real. There "is radiation" all around us, and all over the universe, and has always been. We are talking about excessive radiation levels in some locations, yes. But radiation itself is part of the natural environment, has always been there, and will always be there. A radiation-free environment is something you would have to create artificially. So please stop hyperventilating.

Quote: "Thousands of gallons of contaminated water are being stored on site, with no permanent solution for safely disposing of it."

Er, someone has got their figures seriously wrong here.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Thousands of gallons? Thousands of tons, surely?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Even hundreds of thousands of tons.

WilliB I dont think you understand how bad this disaster is . Just saying radiation is all around us is rather misleiding dont you think ? Do you claim that all radiation is the same ? Do you claim that you could even go and live next to fukushima ? It is a BIT misinforming dont you think ? Ofocurse , radiation is all around us ,, even if you would take a walk in the sun you get radiation ,, but that is not even comparable to what you get by a disaster like this . Just ask yourself what is all the worry about chernobyl , fukushima and try to understand what people are talking about . Belive me it is worse than takign a walk in the sune ,, much , much ,, much worse. Get informed . The world does not exist black and white. It is not as simple as saying there is radiation everywhere so all radiation is themsame . You would be totally missing the point . It would be like saying there is smoke everywhere ,, always has been ,, always will be ,, so why worry about smoking ? come on everyone , rerlax and smoke 2 packs a day ,, cant hurt you . Would i be wrong to say that ? do you see how dumb it is to make such a claim ? Get uinformed and stop misinforming . Peace .

The answers would be yes, yes, and no, respectively.

All radiation IS fundamentally the same; only the wavelengths differ. And yes, I could go and live next to Fukushima. Except for limited hotspots, it is not dangerous. That people have been evacuated is a preventive measure, never heard about the concept? And no, the misinformation is entirely on your side. Nuclear reactions are all around is in the universe. The sun is a giant nuclear fusion reactor. All stars are, in fact. Some astronomical events release such radiation that whole star systems get microwaved. Nuclear fission reactors like Fukushima also occur naturally, without any human engineering. Google for the Oklo and Okélobondo deposits in Gabon and be surprised. Over 20 such natural nuclear reactors have been identified, and guess what? Africa still exists and teems with life.

There are so many things to get upset about in this world, but this is not one of them.
