He went missing Monday during a visit to a volcano on the island of Kuchinoerabu-jima in the northern Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan.

I suspect that this will turn into a plot for a bad movie. I do not think that anyone will ever find any evidence of this man. I think he has fallen into the volcano....Oooops there goes that book....

Mystery: according to one of his friends, his Facebook account was accessed for about 1 minute on Friday. So police is looking at this case from another angle; looks like that runaway bride history.

Missing for 5 days isn't looking too good. Not likely he will be found alive at this point.

hope he didn't fall in

11x5km should be covered in a few days with 40 men and dogs using a standard search pattern over thick terrain. Thermo imaging would help assuming he is still alive. Pity he didn't carry a SOS homing device, CB radio or GPS locator.

This guy is experienced at hiking and he doesn't have a GPS unit? That could be something he regrets right now. Hopefully he'll be found before it's too late.

Hmm, academic goes missing on remote island? Is anyone else getting Trick/Puzzle/Galileo flashbacks?
