It has been jolly hot hasn’t it? Well, it’s bleeding hot at the moment and it’s still the morning, can you believe it?

Well, air con on full blast again, lol

It's actually quite pleasant at the moment (6:40 am). I got the windows open for a bit missus. It only starts to get real hot once the sun is over the yard arm from 8 am. No need for the air-con now, if you know what I mean.

This is only a surprise to those who refused and continue to refuse the science of climate change.

How much territory will Japan lose as the Pacific and East Sea rise?

6 ( +33 / -27 )

Facts Please

Not a lot, it’s not so low lying like some nations except for some coastal areas.

This kind of thing was called "conspiracy theory" not too long ago, but yet again those crazies have been proven right. Could it be the kind of thing that actually mobilizes Japanese people to give the government the beating it so thoroughly deserves?

Anyway, when there's concrete everywhere and very little green space in the cities and towns, that heat is just going to intensify.

6 ( +24 / -18 )

Average temperatures were considerably higher in the northern, eastern, and western parts of the country, the JMA said.

For Tokyo, the JMA’s data shows that June-August 2010 was still slightly hotter than the same months this year. The first three weeks of August 2010 were absolutely brutal, if anyone recalls.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

It was actually too hot to go to the outdoor pool

Japan had hottest summer on record, weather agency says

I believe it. Its been hell.

3 ( +14 / -11 )

I kind of worked that out for myself, old boy. Damnable hot and sweating like fox with the hounds on it’s sent. Terribly atrocious heat.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

The hottest on record until now... But that record is bound to fall before the decade is out.

4 ( +14 / -10 )

It's actually quite pleasant at the moment (6:40 am).

I often feel that way when stepping out the door on my way to work in the mornings. But by the time I get to the office 40 minutes later, I'm soaking in sweat and running for the air con. The effects of Japan's humidity are accumulative, ie, they sneak up on you. This year has been relentless.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

I like how they use the past tense. Supposed to get up to 36°C or so today.

1 ( +14 / -13 )

Yup, and Japan is the largest Combustion engines producer in the world including Diesel, not to mention all the plastics and industrial trash the get burned daily by many factories at night so no one can see the smoke, The only thing you will notice is the chocking smell and the blue haze the next morning .

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

It’s still a living hell and according to the news it will stay hot and humid for the coming days as well.

Japanese summer is simply intolerable, but then you keep seeing people walking alone or riding their bicycles wearing a mask with 39 degrees.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

This will be the new normal so get used to it.

I recommend people trying to let their bodies adjust to the heat naturally. Sweating is good for your body, especially your pores.

-1 ( +9 / -10 )

IT'S HOOOOTTT, I'M MELTING !!!!!!!.........

-14 ( +4 / -18 )

LOL !!..

-22 ( +0 / -22 )

It has been undeniably hot this year. Its the first time i have ever felt faint whilst cycling just a short distance.

Arguing whether it is caused by climate change or some extreme weather patterns is less inportant than discussing how we deal with this new trend.

With the price of gasoline and electricity at highly inflated prices we need to strike some better deals with Japans energy suppliers, or get a real shift on developing some more efficient cooling technology. A few trees wouldnt go amiss either.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Sweating is good for your body, especially your pores.

Good luck sweating on those 80-90% humidity days. Thats why Japanese summer is particularly dangerous.

But the summer isn't over yet

I really wish they'd grasp the English language better

We all wish you would educate yourself before posting. In Japan, "summer" ends on Aug 31st.

"summer is the three months of June, July, and August"

HAIL ZORG .!. .!.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

I cannot believe the education system hasn't torn down all these old, dilapidated, prison-looking school buildings in favor of state of the art facilities with central air conditioning, instead of relying on crappy Mitsubishi and Hitachi units from twenty years ago.

Everything in Japan gets updated, including train stations, offices, government buildings... except the schools. Truly a testament to how much this society cares about its children.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

OssanAmerica: "We all wish you would educate yourself before posting. In Japan, "summer" ends on Aug 31st.

"summer is the three months of June, July, and August""

Utter nonsense. Anyone who actually believe summer starts June 1st and ends August 31st is a fool, probably the same kind of fool that believes the first day of spring is February 2nd -- right before the coldest time of the year and the most snow in some areas. The same type of fool that believes Japan still has "four unique seasons". It has two. Period. I always chuckle at people or companies that don't start using air-conditioning until June 1st or heating until December 1st, despite the sweltering heat or freezing conditions, or people who pack their summer clothes away all on the same weekend, then complain about the heat and that they have no appropriate clothing to wear.

If there is a technical season change, it is with the autumnal equinox -- THAT is when summer technically ends, same as it begins with the summer solstice. Far less arbitrary dates than June 1st to August 31st, given that, for example, with the equinox night officially becomes longer than the day. Weather-wise, of course, summer here is recently from late April or so until mid-October, with winter following by about a week. Heck, for three days in March this year alone we had temps of 35°C or so before it dropped back down to 10°C.

So even though the beaches closed on Friday and Starbucks may have stopped selling cold drinks (at least they used to, saying "sold out" as of September 1st), summer is NOT over.

11:00 a.m. and already 35°C. yeah... haha... "It WAS a hot summer". Rubbish.

Roy: "Especially if you're "scientifically speaking" the meteorological summer -- as employed by meteorologists and climatologists -- invariably is and has been 1 June to 31 August, since 1780."

What on earth is "scientific" about that? There is actually ZERO science about that. It's about as scientific as saying you are physically one year older the day of your birthday than the previous day.

-6 ( +17 / -23 )

One year has to be hotter than another year anyway.

True. I just hope you realise the implications of those hottest years being consecutive.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Are people really struggling to divide 12 into 4 ?

5 ( +12 / -7 )

wolfshine: "Everything in Japan gets updated, including train stations, offices, government buildings... except the schools. Truly a testament to how much this society cares about its children."

Yes and no. Everything in Japan NEEDS to be updated every few years because Japanese products are no longer made to last. Guaranteed that when your air-conditioner fails after 8 years they will say, "Oh... well... we no longer carry the parts for that model, so it would be cheaper to buy a new one than repair it". That goes from air-conditioners to fridges, to cars. Schools here are incredibly underfunded -- possibly the worst in the world -- so they cannot possibly replace anything. Heck, many still use the old gas stoves from the date winter starts -- December 1st! haha. Besides, there is no point in updating tech like air-conditioners when the walls and foundations all have massive gaps and cracks, and the single window panes mean the very second you turn off the unit the heat and humidity increase exponentially. You'd have to update the buildings, first, and they didn't even start quake-proofing schools until well after quakes that killed many.

Paustovsky: "Are people really struggling to divide 12 into 4 ?"

Nope. It's just that you're suggesting Japan has four seasons of exactly three months each, to the day. That's not how it works. It is hotter and more humid today than it was during "summer" -- two days ago. Summer did not end that day, not by any means.

-9 ( +10 / -19 )

Summer ends on the Autumn Equinox, Sept 23. It's been like that for thousands of years.

8 ( +15 / -7 )

Facts Please - This is only a surprise to those who refused and continue to refuse the science of climate change. How much territory will Japan lose as the Pacific and East Sea rise?

I knew there would be one person screaming climate change. Records have only been kept for 125 years, which is only the blink of an eye in climate time. A few days of high temps does not mean the end of the world. Climate is cyclic and there are no records to support it hasn’t been hotter in the past.

-11 ( +6 / -17 )

Certainly felt like it. Too hot for the beaches for me. Autumn weather will be nice.

Yes, in the West, In Japan for meteorological purposes "summer" is considered June, July and August.

Look at the bottom right of this page. It states "Summer(Jun July Aug)"

I guess there are those who believe the Earth is flat.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Now I propose (to keep the concrete companies happy) we design concrete trees, and (to keep the plastic industry going) fill them with plastic leaves. Because real trees and real leaves will be too bothersome in the cities.Although on the other hand, the government could give all those horticultural experts and big cities some of the concrete pouring cash, and pour the money into making the cities greener, and cooler. These guys have jobs, create jobs, and make the cities better to live in, just as much as the concrete pouring industry. Surely, Mother Nature has a great way of cooling cities down, creating jobs, getting money into the economy, making the places prettier, providing shade for humans and sucking out the CO2, improving the air, and providing homes for birds, and other bits and bobs, compared to the "let's find a super high tech solution. I'm really trying to find the downside apart from leaf cleaning.

I remember this being debated in the 1990s and it all being poo-poohed by certain groups. We solved the ozone layer problem, acid rain, smog, lead, and the dumping of human waste during the big stink. So I believe if the politicians pull their finger out.....we can get on the right track.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

What on Earth is happening to Earth today?

Only when the total nine or ten billion of the world's population wakes up to not only danger we face but the End Of The World, will we be saved.

The same type of fool that believes Japan still has "four unique seasons". It has two. Period.

Nnnnnope. It clearly has four distinct seasons in most of the country, just like many parts of the world. (incl. NYC, where I grew up).

The ungodly heat and humidity of summer, with its deafening cacophony of cicadas.

The brisk, cool temps of Autumn, with it's beautifully colored foliage.

The bitter cold of Winter, with its bare trees and occasional snow storms.

The lovely comfortable temperatures of Spring, with its blooming flowers and world-famous sakura.

Obviously, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Okinawa differ due to location.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Some Japanese claim Japan has a fifth season: tsuyu — the rainy season. But it happens during the summer season.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Wow!!.......I did not realise that Japan had been monitoring their countries weather temperature since 1898.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The humidity has been better than last year, and, frankly, the temperatures have been pretty normal. I've been here for over 30 years. Slight ups and downs, but always hot as hell.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

Wallace: "Summer ends on the Autumn Equinox, Sept 23. It's been like that for thousands of years."

EXACTLY! I seriously laugh at people who think summer ended at exactly midnight, September 1st. Anyone who ACTUALLY believes that admits that "summer" has no actual meaning and no relevance to how we live our lives. Absolute fools, the lot of them, without any ability to use logic.

Roy: "Not Japan, the whole world."

Really... so, it's summer now in Australia too, then?

I am glad you guys can at least admit the idea of Japan having "four unique seasons" is simply a decision made about arbitrary dates and there is actually nothing different about them otherwise. I mean, come on, are you honestly going to argue that today is a lovely autumn day? How is today different than two days ago, except that it's hotter and more humid and the sun more intense? Like I said, it's like the people who think spring starts on February 2nd (even though by YOUR argument it cannot possibly until March 1st at midnight), then have to make up crazy weather expressions to explain why it becomes freezing cold -- coldest days of the year -- after, like "Strict cold for three days before warm" and then it's cold for a month, so they say, "lingering cold" and other such crap. Didn't they even say we entered the rainy season three times and called them different rainy seasons this year? (and it didn't rain much in some places either, until the rainy season ended... then ended again... then again).

-10 ( +5 / -15 )

Like the farmers I am sticking with the astronomical seasons just have existed since time beginning.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Lord Dartmouth: "The humidity has been better than last year, and, frankly, the temperatures have been pretty normal. I've been here for over 30 years. Slight ups and downs, but always hot as hell."

I've been here a long time too, and I agree in part -- there have been summers where some days were hotter (I recall more than a few times it went over 40°C), but I don't recall it being like this for so many consecutive days. Also, the heat feels more intense. A couple of weekends ago, I think Sunday the 20th, when it hit 39°C here you also had intense heat wafting up from the ground.

Anyway, going to be an even hotter "autumn" day tomorrow, peeps, so brace yourselves and drink lots of fluids.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Astronomical seasons are the perfect of the imperfect. I also follow the lunar calendar.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

The Astronomical seasons do not exist according to any calendars. It exists according to the movement of the sun and calendars were designed from that. The movement of the sun has existed for billions of years.

You are free to use the meteorological seasons that are your choice.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

The Solar (Celtic) summer season is 1 May – 31 July.

By the Irish calendar, summer begins on 1 May (Beltane) and ends on 31 July (Lughnasadh). In the middle of summer, the sun can appear even at midnight in the northern hemisphere.

The Gaulish Coligny calendar is the oldest known Celtic solar-lunar ritual calendar.

>    The Astronomical seasons do not exist according to any calendars.

> I know. You were arguing the vernal equinox is "Sept 23. It's been like that for thousands of years". Not me.

I wasn't but to be accurate the Vernal Equinox is around the moment the sun passes over the Equator. I meant the sun has passed over the Equator since the beginning of time.

You are free to use the meteorological seasons that are your choice.

> The point is that the weather agency is using them. You know, the one in the article we are commenting on?

You are free to use that.

I am not here to argue with you. The article does not mention meteorological seasons. It states the temperatures for June through August.

I use the astronomical seasons. End of story.

-9 ( +4 / -13 )

The movement of the sun has existed for billions of years.

? The earth moves with respect to sun? Or is Wallace correct and I'm wrong? I'll find out soon.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

We all know the earth moves around the sun like all the other planets except the moon which moves around the earth. When the earth's rotation reaches the point when the sunlight passes over the earth's equator indicates the end of the summer and winter depending on whether it is the northern or southern hemispheres.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This is data released by the JMA and measured according to their established definition of summer time.

Whether you believe summer is over or not is irrelevant to this article or data.

The Astronomical seasons do not exist according to any calendars.

> Oh my goodness

The movement of the planets existed for billions of years long before a single calendar system was made. Maybe I didn't express it very well but the calendar systems came from the movement of the earth's rotation and its rotation around the sun.

Thankfully down here in Miyazaki we had the coolest summer in years, with most days being cloudy and around 30 degrees. But the humidity was still stifling.

In my world summer ends when the humidity drops and days become comfortable. This usually happens around the beginning of September. Autumn is a long and lovely season with warm days and cool nights that ends when it gets cold in December.

I would imagine that each part of Japan and also the world has seasons that correlate to their geographic location and not necessarily the calendar.

Just as a reminder, the autumn equinox is between 21st and 24th of Spetember, depending on the year, in a Gregorian calendar.

Lived in Japan but never heard of Summer was ending on 1st September.

It was rather ending last day of September with cool biz campaign (now last day of October).

Good luck everyone.

Please remind yourself that the use of electricty with aircon makes air warmer with time in cities.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The Autumn equinox is not used in defining "Summer months" by meteorologists.

"The meteorological convention is to define summer as comprising the months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere.

Under meteorological definitions, all seasons are arbitrarily set to start at the beginning of a calendar month and end at the end of a month. This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates.

The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in countries including Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Denmark, Russia and Japan. It is also used by many people in the United Kingdom and Canada. In Ireland, the summer months according to the national meteorological service, Met Éireann, are June, July and August."

The hottest summer in recent memory will likely be one of the coolest summers in the last 100 years, a hundred years from now.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Summer starts when I feel hot. Summer ends when I don't feel hot. Hahahaha!

I agree with you.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Am in Yamato city Kanagawa. We only used air in the evening in one room three times so far this summer. It is not that hot out.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

What are the concrete solutions and what is done to slightly fight the heat, except turning aircon.

where I live , I see more and more new houses just concreting and cementing in front of their houses, like a parking lot. No maintenance for sure, but no trees around the house, no soil that can absorb the heat. Concrete just reflect the heat on their own houses. They just turn the aircon as a remedy. More trees, more soils please, shutters on windows, etc…

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The Autumn equinox is not used in defining "Summer months" by meteorologists.

While the pedants have had a fine day of it on the definition of "summer", I think the important point has been missed - Japan is getting hotter, dangerously hotter. And as the downvotes against any post making this point show, many have their heads in the sand on this point, having been conditioned to believe that man-made global warming is leftist propaganda to steal their cars.

(and while September won't feel much like autumn in Japan, it will in, say, Scotland, from the fact that it's turning cold and the leaves are turning brown and falling - the clear natural signs of autumn. If the leaves are turning and falling, it's autumn where you are, whatever the bloody moon doing.)

It was actually too hot to go on the loo during the daytime, I am afraid. Our toilet does not have A/C, and sitting on the second-floor loo for any length of time (without straining, mind you) on hot days means getting completely drenched in sweat. Anybody else experience this?

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Those Japanese are mistaken.

OssanAmerica, it is you who is clearly mistaken.

The Japanese have an occidental complex, they simply cannot accept that they are part of Asia, and consider themselves brothers of the Europeans and North Americans. Hence they assert that Japan has four seasons, ignoring the fact that the rainy season is a full-fledged season of its own. I always snicker when I hear the term 四季 (shiki = 4 seasons) applied to Japan by my compatriots.

But summer is not over. Maybe it will be over in November.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Facts Please

Not a lot, it’s not so low lying like some nations except for some coastal areas.

Parts of Tokyo's Sumida, Koto, Adachi, Katsushika and Edogawa wards are below sea level.

Parts of Osaka City are below sea level, while the highest point in the city is only 37 metres above sea level.

20% of Japan's population live in coastal areas less than 10 metres above sea level.

I am not mistaken. Tsuyu is described as a季節の現象. A Seasonal Phenomena. It is not a "Season" of it's own.

”梅雨は季節現象であり、その入り明けは、平均的に5日間程度の「移り変わり」の期間がありま”。

https://tinyurl.com/JPweather

The four seasons as we know them today have been used in Japan since 1873. But prior to that the Japanese simply defined Spring (Feb 5-May 6), Summer (May 7-Aug8), Autumn (Aug 9-Nov 7) and Winter (Nov 8-Feb 4). In addition, they also had what are called "micro seasons" in between. However, the four basic seasons are not a deliberate effort to Westernize. The shifting of the dates to match the West, was.

So really no need to snicker.

I recommend taking several quick lukewarm showers a day and turn the fans on. People keep blasting their A/Cs and wondering why it gets hotter every year. Its because most our electic is generated by burning carbon based fuels. And even when its not, the tech to generate electic burned carbon based fuels to create.

The only way forward is to go back. No one seems to want to admit this, but our kids are going to all die young because of your damned A/Cs and other utterly selfish and wasteful tech.

I have eight barrels of rain water that disputes, suggests otherwise.

Humid, yep, a scorcher the hottest summer on record, hardly.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Perhaps the 15 locations selected are all areas where urbanization has been accelerated, more concrete & asphalt, and the trees/greenery removed to widen roads.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Average temperatures were considerably higher in the northern, eastern, and western parts of the country, the JMA said.

I don't know if you know, but record breaking temps are being reported all across the globe. AND the trend of record breaking temps has accelerated with ever higher temps occuring mostly within the last 20 years.

Even some the most ardent climate change denialists have switched from "Its not happening" to "Its happening, but its natural and not man-made". You sound a bit behind the curve on this.

I am often called a "conspiracy nut" but even I can't accept that a conspiracy could be that big.

I am also fairly certain all the wildfires we see now are neither the result of "over-reporting" nor shadow government arsonists at work.

OK, from data, 15 locations around the country from June through August have experienced the hottest summer on record, publish the full data and peer reviews

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Yes, please provide the actual from the alleged 15 locations. Transparency leads credulity.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Summer can be any hot day. The word “summer” originates from the Old English word “sumor,” which in turn is derived from the Proto-Germanic “sumur-”. This Proto-Germanic root can be traced back further to the Proto-Indo-European base “sem-”, which means “together/one”. The word’s evolution to mean the warmest season of the year might be connected to the idea of the sun being most directly overhead, or the time when everyone would come together for various agricultural or social activities. Over time and across languages, the term evolved to refer specifically to the warm season we know today as summer.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The official start and end of summer depend on whether you’re referring to meteorological summer or astronomical summer:

1. Meteorological Summer: • Start: June 1 • End: August 31

This definition is based on the annual temperature cycle and the calendar. It’s more consistent with the grouped three-month periods of the year, making it simpler for meteorological observing and forecasting.

2. Astronomical Summer: • Start: Summer Solstice (usually around June 20th to 22nd) • End: Autumnal Equinox (usually around September 22nd to 24th)

This definition is based on the position of Earth in relation to the Sun and the tilt of its axis. These dates can vary slightly each year.

Remember, these dates are applicable for the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed.

Hope this helps

What is peer review?

https://beta.elsevier.com/reviewer/what-is-peer-review?trial=true

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Peer reviews are a vital means/tool to validate research.

To road map conclusive processes, where data sets associated with scientific research are assessed and reviewed facilitating transparency.

Articles and statements that can influence public opinion, in respect to fashioning J Government policies associated with climate change.

It was actually too hot to go on the loo during the daytime, I am afraid. Our toilet does not have A/C,

No homes have A/C in their toilets. They simply have a ventilation system or a window. But this explains why you're so full of it.

Japan had hottest summer on record, weather agency says

How can such a statement be taken with any credulity, without any supporting evidence.

Japan taxpayers through the JMA has invested trillions in a Digital Earth strategy.

Modelling from Earth orbiting satellites, a series of ground-based observatories, additional supporting technologies collecting/analyzing data, enabling scientists to view Japan’s climate. Measuring the impact of weather systems and temperature variations at both regional/global scale.

Vital climate change research, mapping weather extremes so to scale preparedness for climate change related risk prevention that saves lives.

All providing robust evidence to support climate risk management

To make implausibly glib suggestions/statements on lazy lackadaisical series of temperature readings is feeble and ill advised.

The JMA, in this bulletin, does not even attempt to comment on the reason for the temperature extremes. They are simply publishing data.

What?

Roy Sophveason, at least take time and read the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, review the section that assists governments to implementing appropriate mitigation and adaptation policies.

I don’t know what Strangerland was mumbling on about, old age at a guess?

The evidence is there, already linked in the comments.

M request/suggestion for a full data set supported by a detailed peer review cuts through the complexity of the subject matter directed to the JT community as a whole.

What kind of peer review do you think can be done on measurements? peer review is about validating the methods followed, and to see if conclusions from a report can be or not validly made from those. Unless a report is trying to validate measures as surrogate for other things there is nothing a peer can agree or disagree with simply taking them.

Are you not aware that Japan has tropical rainforests ?

Apparently not !

Japan has no tropical rain forests. Not one. It has rain forest (temperate), and it has tropics, but not the two together.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Roy Sophveason, the point of this article may have nothing consequential or anything seriously factual other than the need to politically prepare J people for acceptance of climate taxes.

Climate Change - Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

https://www.mofa.go.jp/files/100256809.pdf

Quote....

Japan aims to reduce its GHG emissions by 46% in FY2030 from FY2013 levels, setting an ambitious target that is aligned with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Furthermore, Japan will continue its strenuous efforts in its challenge to meet the lofty goal of cutting its emission by 50%.

Roy Sophveason such an undertaking cannot be achieved on the hope that magic climate fund money trees will sprout, to be shaken at will.

Direct, indirect, stealth taxes will be introduced.

Expect to view more articles similar to the above, however a lot shriller and urgent.

What evidence?

"Japan recorded its highest average temperature this summer in 125 years, the nation's weather agency said on Friday".

Monthly average temperature data at the following 15 locations selected from among weather observatories that have been observing continuously since 1898 to avoid being influenced by urbanization and biased toward specific areas.

This is just statement to justify a means to end to implement a future climate policy that will need to be funded.

Well there your have it, Roy Sophveason conspiratorial gobbledygook.

No complaint from you then.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

This is just statement to justify a means to end to implement a future climate policy that will need to be funded.

This statement reflects the data being collected, you have no argued how this is not the case (likely because it is not easy to refute clear statements about the data) and instead use as an excuse a conspiracy for which you offer no evidence whatsoever, this is not a rational position to take and only evidence a serious antiscientific bias.

You require evidence not that actions are being taken, but that those actions are NOT justified by the well proved climate change emergency.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

virusrex, you have answered your own question

The insistence that Japan had hottest summer on record, quoting so called evidence....

Monthly average temperature data at the following 15 locations selected from among weather observatories that have been observing continuously since 1898 to avoid being influenced by urbanization and biased toward specific areas.

It is hapless gullible naivety. A statement without reason other than a warning that future action may or will become necessary.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

virusrex, you have answered your own question

And completely disproved your criticism as invalid, that is the whole point.

The evidence prove the claim made in the article, you have been unable to argue against it in any way, and instead of arguing you are trying to use baseless conspiracy theories to explain why you insist on something that you have been unable to prove.

OssanAmerica,

”梅雨は季節現象であり、その入り明けは、平均的に5日間程度の「移り変わり」の期間がありま”。

Thank you for your reference, but it proves nothing and misses the point. The rainy season where I live (Tokyo) lasts roughly from early June to mid-July, thus a duration of approx. 6 weeks or 42 days. This is more than a passing phenomenon (although admittedly, in recent years, the "rainy season" is gradually becoming less rainy, with more interludes of blue sky in between). I think this bears repeating: Contrary to the stubbornly held belief among the Japanese that Japan is not being part of Asia and is inherently different from Asia (and thus does not have 5 (plebeian) seasons but 4 (classy) seasons like the temperate and civilized countries of the West), our country, Japan, is very much part of Asia. Pointing this out is rather heretical, admittedly. I will persist in the (fact-based) view that Japan does indeed have 5 distinct seasons and snicker when my dear compatriots declare that Japan, just like Vivaldi's famous concertos, has four seasons. In closing, were you a composer tasked with expressing Japan's seasons with orchestral music, would you compose four concertos, or five?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Seasons are arbitrary markers, created by humans to mark variations in weather over the year, giving a point of reference for communications.

Anyone arguing there is a 'right' or 'wrong' definition to when the seasons start or end, is wrong, due to it being arbitrary, and correctness can only be defined within the construct of that human-created arbitrary marker. It's fine to use different markers for the seasons as long as the person with whom you are communicating also understands the arbitrary markers you are using.

If you think there are five seasons in Japan, you are correct, until you are talking with someone who is speaking in the context of Japan having four seasons, which again, is right, unless you're talking in the context of Japan having five seasons.

It's all arbitrary. Part of communication is using an agreed upon set of definitions so we can understand what each other are talking about.

I'm not really a fan of summer. Usually I go to the beach furing this season but most of the time its too crowded. My favorite season is winter though.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Glad to see my last comment ended this silly debate about which markers of a season are "correct".

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Seasons are arbitrary markers

I agree, although we could also say seasons have arbitrary markers, depending on where you are. The first flowers that bloom or seeing newborn lambs suggest Spring to me here in Scotland. Fully grown leaves on trees and occasionally not needing to wear a sweater suggests summer. Leaves changing color suggests Autumn. Waiting for Spring suggests Winter.

One big difference I experienced in Japan during my first year - Spring, Autumn - good. Winter, Summer - bad. While in Scotland, it seems to be Winter - bad, Summer - good (sometimes), Spring, Autumn - not quite so bad.

Was bad timing for my AC to break and an even worse decision of me to try and power through it. Probably would have saved money by buying a new AC judging by the amount of water I'm drinking daily.
