A woman who got out of her car after an accident on the Ise Expressway in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture, was hit by three cars in succession and died on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m., TV Asahi reported. Police said the car driven by the woman, who was in her 40s or 50s, hit a crash cushion drum and overturned near the Ichishi Ureshino Interchange.

The woman got out of the car, walked across the median strip, and was hit by a car. The impact knocked her into the opposite lane where she was hit by two cars in succession.

The woman suffered severe injuries all over her body and was declared dead at the scene, police said.

The drivers of the three cars involved in the collision were not injured.

That is tragic! She was probably already disoriented from the initial crash and was trying to get to safety.

If you have an accident get behind a guardrail and stay there til police arrive.

Please don't walk around, even after accident in expressway

We can all agree to that. Safety first. Thou it could have been she was disoriented or confused after exiting her vehicle.

My condolences to her family and all parties involved in the accident.

The thing in Japan is that drivers of all 3 cars that hit her will face criminal charges and civil lawsuits, as some blame is almost always assigned to each of the parties

That is awful, but no one's fault, although we don't know the cause of her crash into the crash cushion drum. And while instinct would be to get out of the car and rush to "safety", she should have tried to remain in place given where she was.

I was once stranded in the middle of the freeway meridian. This was before smartphones so the only way I couldn't contact anyone was to get off the freeway.

I knew the dangers of trying cross four lanes so I waited quite a long time till I saw a really long break in the traffic.

I sprinted across the freeway as fast as I could, but still found some cars closing the gap with me pretty quickly even though they were a good 150-200 yards away when I started my run.

BTW, I survived.

and that their reckless driving caused a death

What happens when you suddenly press the brakes all the way at 60+ kph on the expressway?

10:30 pm. It was dark. They probably didn't see her until it was too late.

why other cars hit her that i dont know. Werent there road lights there?

Light not necessarily, we don't know whether that lane has opposite lane too, where light from opposing vehicles can easily make drivers having less visibility, we don't what kind of clothing that female wore which can make matter worst.

And so they should, The law is that they should have stopped and helped out with the accident and called police.. they didn't do what the law requires of them ... and that their reckless driving caused a death.

Please share the Japanese road law that requires this.

People sometimes make bad decisions when they are in new situations. Tragic series of events.

Sadly the two last drivers will all likely at least lose their licenses and jobs because a body fell on their cars. The first to hit her will be jailed.

Actually no they wont. Japanese toll roads and expressways are vehicle first roadways. Meaning it is 100% illegal for pedestrians to use or walk on the roads. They are called "Jidosha Senyou Doro" and unlike other roads, vehicles have the right of way.

They wont get charged with anything.

I just hope they get the mental health care they need!

Lets break this down:

Police said the car driven by the woman, who was in her 40s or 50s, hit a crash cushion drum and overturned

im interested in as to what was the reason for a grownup woman in her prime years to suddenly crush into cusion drums. It is not reported that some other car caused her to do that, so perhaps it was either her own car problem or her being in a state of mind that prevented her to drive safely. Either intoxicated(drugs, alcohol), or poisoned. Perhaps an animal jumped onto the road and she did this sudden movement? Maybe.

why other cars hit her that i dont know. Werent there road lights there?

There are many different ways for "PREVENTION" but NO one can predict when and accident is going to happen.

I don't know this particular highway but there are places on Southern California freeways that experience traffic collisions daily, frequently more than one per day in the same spot or very nearly so. A new crash in the same spot every single day, despite Caltrans and CHP efforts at prevention. Sometimes people will crash into the crash. Cops, fire crew, ambulance, all sorts of flashing lights and some knucklehead just plows into it. Just nuts. The so-called "South Bay Curve" on I-405 is one such spot. It is a half mile long ever so gentle curve but for some reason it's a crash magnet. There doesn't even have to be a crash for traffic to slow down and back up. Pretty soon it's bumper cars. There was a winter crash compilation on Youtube that featured this one roundabout in Milwaukee, day after day one car after another overshoots. loses traction on icy pavement and ends up in the grass or crashing into another car. The roundabout is lit up like daylight, flashing lights, plenty of signage but people still crash there. Humans are perverse beings.

@john b An "Accident is an UNPLANNED EVENT" how can you expect the police to try harder before the accident happens. There are many different ways for "PREVENTION" but NO one can predict when and accident is going to happen.

without being able to see the situation, it is impossible to really judge. to the first driver i would like to ask, 'you saw an accident up ahead: did you move over? did you slow down? did you pay more attention? to the THIRD driver i would ask: how close were you to the second driver? were you far enough behind that you could deal with anything that might happen?

whenever multiple vehicles are involved, the initial accident doesn't explain why the other 49 cars crashed. the explanation of that is the way of driving on that road, and if the way is not good the police need to be trying harder BEFORE THE ACCIDENT HAPPENS.

At this time, she survived, other drivers just use expressway safely. Not until she choose to walk around that expressway that lead chain of accident to other drivers.

Finally, a good decent comment from you, congratulations..

Why is everyone calling it an "Accident"? All accidents are preventable. What started this tragic event was a crash.
