A 25-year-old woman was hit and killed by a train on JR Yokosuka line in Hodogaya Ward in Yokohama on Thursday night, police said Friday.
Police said they received a call at around 11:30 p.m., reporting that a woman had been hit by a train. The woman, Natsuki Miyata, was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, Sankei Shimbun reported.
Police said that according to Miyata's family, she had gone out after her cat which had run away from home.
Police are investigating the circumstances to see how Miyata ran onto the tracks.
Meanwhile, in another accident in Tokyo's Adachi Ward on Thursday night, an elderly woman died after she was hit by a train between Kita-Senju and Ushida stations on the Tobu Tetsudo Skytree line.
Police said the woman, who was in her 70s, was pushing her bicycle across the tracks at around 7:30 p.m., Fuji TV reported. The five sets of tracks are about 30 meters wide and police believe the woman's bike might have got stuck.
Service on the line was suspended for about two hours.

Have frequently noticed how people in Japan can focus one thing to the exclusion of all else - in this case with apprently tragic consequences.

chasing after a cat is silly and makes no sense. You'll never catch it! it will find it's way home.

"Cats have nine lives but we have only one". Cats' brain is smaller than ours but they are not dumb. They can naturally GPS their way back home. Don't bother looking for them when they're gone for a couple of days. They're just utilising their hunting and territorialisation instinct. But I understand the lady. Sometimes, people have given their pets so much affection that loving one selflessly posts risk of injuring oneself, even worse death. R.I.P.

call me cynical, but I think the cat story might be a cover to A) hide the shame of a suicide or B) avoid the penalty/compensation demanded by train companies after suicides.

Chasing a cat... what a pointless death.

That's what you take away from the situation? the cat?

That doesnt mean that is the reason why she was killed. Who knows what happened as soon as she left the house. We have no idea if there was foul play or other forces involved.

Cat +1, Humans still at zero! I love my cats... but sometimes I honestly believe one of them is secretly trying to kill me!
