6,800 people waiting timo be hospitalized or sent to a lodging facility? This proves that the Medical System has already collapsed. If the J Gov't would stop worrying about the Olympics, they could easily use the Olympic Village for housing, and mobilize JSDF nurses to assist..Heck, they could even ask the U.S. Military to assist as well. Crazy thinking I have eh? And I am just an average Joe that came up with a plan in 7 seconds. I didn't have to consult with a panel to consult a panel, that will consult a panel to see what the experts say. I am sure tax payers would have no problem with the Olympic Village being used...if lives can be saved.

@Simian

Hopefully this will help remove the government over reach action against the virus, bans etc, and increase people’s ability to live freely through the pandemic,

Did you read the article? The part where it says, "A woman in her 30s infected with the coronavirus"

Are you implying she should freely be able to go out and get on a train while infected?

I feel terrible for this lady and her family and I am also against punitive lockdowns but when someone is infected they should be forced to isolate and there should be a penalty for violating quarantine.

Had no symptoms is the key here and she committed siucide maybe in fear of respiratory failure and the hospitals are overwhelmed and was on a waiting list, yet Suga wants to pass a law that forces you to be hospitalized or face imprisonments or a 10 thousand dollar fine For not complying. His cabinet is going to be making a lot of fines and getting rich quick. RIP

Did you read why she committed suicide?

And the Cabinet does not personally profit from fines.

So far i haven't heard of the virus killing any kids before. Why would she do this for god's sake. Most people recover quickly after a few weeks of rest. Killing yourself and leaving behind a husband and daughter is 100 times more cruel than risking infecting them.

"It is a truly regrettable incident. I realize how important it is to provide care for the mental health of patients," Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike told reporters.

Yuriko, let’s get testing up and running for free and without having to wait hours.

Anonymous testing without the stigma of having others contacted, without making people feel like pariahs would allow people to shed a lot of anxiety.

I imagine getting a test while asymptomatic in Japan is almost impossible-it should not be so!

I think better education of children would help and a proper mental policy and awareness program to kill the stigma. Why do so many Japanese adults grow up (this is not supposed to sound harsh, I just don't know how to phrase it) with issues or appearing to be weak and seeking an easy way out (suicide) and often taking family members with them?

Is suicide directly or indirectly reinforced in children's school education, books or TV? There must be a reason why many Japanese decide to commit suicide for what often appears to me as trivial issues?

The whole virus situation has been handled poorly and this woman has become a victim of the govts incompetence and shameful actions

I wonder this as well..However there is some bad anime on TV here..I had to stop my kids from watching it!

She didn’t commit suicide because she was infected with the coronavirus. She likely had preexisting mental health issues and the self-isolation coupled with a very stressful year amplified feelings of guilt and led her to take her own life.

I pray for her family and that this case draws further attention to the stigma surrounding mental illness and the need for more support.

Killing yourself and leaving behind a husband and daughter is 100 times more cruel than risking infecting them.

The article doesn't give background info. According to other sources as cross-reference, both her husband and daughter have also been infected and practicing self-isolating. The in-house spike started with her husband while she and the daughter were found positive thorugh the cluster tracing process.

Logical thinking could have told her not/no longer to worry about infecting her family members. Logical thinking might have suggested that her husband was likely responsible for their daughter's infection case. I'm afraid that her mental state at that time was losing such rationality, incapable of rational judgment. That's a real, serious problem.

And then there is the other article about how suicides have risen here during this pandemic. Or, could the increase partly be due to the shame of having contracted the virus?

We have consultation windows, but we will see if there are ways to improve" support for people seeking help amid the pandemic, Koike said.

Koike, nobody in their right senses believes you, Still waiting for your 65,000 tests a day, I guess it is going to be a long wait as you are busy thinking of flashy catch phrases.

Though I see this sad case rare and isolated, the impact of covid on mental health should never be underestimated. Proper, timely care in this area is needed.

Can you explain how the getting rich quick part is going to work?

She probably feared the “corona discrimination”, the latest of many lovely discriminations in japan.

I agree with this opinion. It was the same with people from Fukushima! I am pretty sure, people will start blaming the child for everybody's problems.

Luckily, the mother did not take the child with her!

more than 6,800 were on waiting lists for hospitals and accommodations.

This is incredibly concerning.

Wonder how many more are suffering of symptoms at home but can’t even get access to testing to be put on that long waiting list.

Japan, time to react to this!

One year to get ready and nothing was done, now many people are suffering and dying unnecessarily.

yet Suga wants to pass a law that forces you to be hospitalized or face imprisonments or a 10 thousand dollar fine

FYI, this is Japan, we dont use $$$ here!

the reason to suicide is not her infection, she probably have already existing depression, having the infection could be a trigger, a correlation. Not all people with the virus will suicide, only the ones with suicidal ideation and pre existing depression. if it wasn't covid, other things/disease could have triggered her suicide.

Has to be more to the story than just the old Coronavirus fear.

It's important to note that not every positive PCR test result is actually an infection. Even the WHO has stated thus.

Corona-hara. Sad case. RIP

As a couple of other people here who actually think about people have pointed out, her suggested reason may have been a trigger but she had much deeper issues affecting her judgement than what she may have said. As seen in the recent statistics, the image of our Human World currently in front of all of us is not...life affirming...in any way and, for people with any kind of anxiety disorder, these are psychologically dangerous times. And we can only know so little about these people who choose to leave us and leave those they love...the pain must be unimaginable...
