One woman was treated for burns and another for smoke inhalation on Sunday night after a fire broke out at a Halloween party in Sapporo.
According to NTV, the fire broke out in a third-floor restaurant in the city's Chuo Ward at around 9 p.m. at which a costume party was taking place. Police were quoted as saying that a woman in her 40s sustained extensive burns to her upper and lower body and was rushed to hospital.
Police believe the blaze was caused by the candle that touched the woman's costume, after which the flames soon spread to the rest of her costume.
About 100 people were at the party, many in zombie costumes, NTV said.

I have to echo Nicky's question. Tell us, please. How many? I haven't really seen anything related to kids and Halloween in Japan that could be considered a crime, but please educate me! I have an open mind and am willing to hear you out. But only if you can substantiate your claims rather than issuing such a vague comment.

Good question. How many? None that I have ever heard of in Japan. I went to 3 kids parties and 3 adult parties this year and had an absolute blast at all of them (hi Geoff!) and so did the kids.
Who cares if it is not local - I say good on the Japanese for taking the best of foreign customs like Christmas and Halloween and letting us all enjoy it. I was out in Roppongi Saturday night and the atmosphere and costumes were incredible. I didnt see any trouble, got chatting to loads of great people and everyone seemed to be having a good time, even the police! Poor guys - the number of people who kept going up to them on the street telling them their costumes were great!!! They took it in good humour though!

How many kids have disappeared, been given bad stuff to eat, died in accidents?? All in the name of a stupid custom that isn't even local...

LOL....ooops!

Saw a photo of an ad on the back of a bus that wanted to have a law passed making it "Jesusween". I'm all for religious freedom (and was raised as a Christian, BTW) and I think something like that is too intolerant for my tastes.
My response to those who fear demons and devils is, "If God is almighty, how can mere demons and devils seriously challenge him? Leave Halloween alone. It's harmless."

I hope the poor woman heals quickly. But with burns I think it is going to take a long time. Have to be careful with candles, they are one of the more dangerous decorations out there.

Handbags and shoes for 1 dollar ?
Don't buy this crap just go to Thailand after the rain subsides. Handbags in thailand are a dollar. Or 200 yen
Candles + Small Bar + plastic cheap cotton costumes = flames & pain
WilliB
Candles, crowded parties, and fancy costumes don´t mix.

Kids costumes are made to be flame retardant (at least in the U.S. they are), but when us adults dress up, we tend to use what's around the house for our costumes and most of that ISN'T flame retardant.
The candle could have been a part of a table centerpiece and if so then the restaurant may have ALWAYS had them and didn't think to remove them for the Halloween party.

What is the significance if the zombi costume statement

What a horrible, hideous accident. I sincerely hope the poor woman recovers well and doesnt suffer too much.
It's gotta hurt so much, can't imagine. Hope she recovers very soon... -_-

Thank you, my dear friend...Here we are celebrating the winter sabbat of Samhain. Samhain is celebrated as a festival, which also marks the beginning of the Pagan NEW YEAR. We serve a variety of dishes made of pumpkin and apple. Cinnamon, maple syrup, nuts and brown sugar are the main ingredients. I wonder how are they doing in India and their Diwali Festival of the New Moon...

Was this a halloween party or just a cosplay party for them? Hope she gets better.

Open flames... easily avoided!
im3ngs
Not much room in Japan to stop-drop-roll. I do hope she gets better. That's just too tragic.
nath
open flame + loose clothing
Why cant people take some of these obvious things into consideration. Where were the candles? on the floor or table?
Zybster
And of course, today when I was talking with a Japanese woman about Halloween, her first reaction was "The accident!" She will remember from now on that it's a "dangerous" holiday. It took me for ever to explain that it was just an accident, and the fact that it happened during a Halloween party does not mean that "Halloween is a dangerous custom."
Chinchan Zu
do you really need a fire in a Halloween party? like who is that culprit who brought candle to light the party up?
cleo
Of course it covers accidents. Injuries are almost always accidents.
I hope both women come through with no lasting effects.
nath
If it is a lot of burning she is going to need really good skin grafting.. Painful and expensive, as it is an accident and national health care does not cover that I believe.

candle + Halloween costume = spontaneous combustion
the_odeman
Umm... who cares? Does it make any difference if they were in witches, vampires or any other characters costumes? I swear the reporting on this site is so silly at times...

Horrible! Horrible! Burns are such a bad way to suffer, I do hope this poor lady recovers soon up there in Hokkaido. But Happy Halloween everybody!
combinibento
I guess she took it literally when someone suggested she wear a hot costume on Halloween.
Hategobo
Candles, cheap tacky costume material, drink, 100 people, sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
Gurukun
On the other hand, at least no one died in the ordeal. 100 people plus and a third floor establishment could have resulted in something much worse.
I hope the ladies can recover 100%.

why is this news, happens every year

...ummm, they infer her costume was a zombie.

I was going to make a joke but then I see the woman suffered extensive burns. She is going to suffer pain for a very long time. This is tragic.
alpachinco
what was her costume?
