Being gay or bi or trans is not an illness. But it's not surprising that some people suffer after being told on a daily basis that you are sick, diseased, a pervert, going to hell, not ift for your job, deserve to die etc etc.

I don't think it's an illness. I don't think they are sick, perverts, going to hell, not fit for their job, deserve to die, etc. If you are a man who was born with a penis/sack, simply stop telling me you are a woman. You can feel like a woman inside. But you are a man. Same the other way around for woman.

Excellent news. Such a shame that LGBT people have to justify their existence again and again in order to keep some bigots happy.

@Joe Yan - From a purely logical perspective you are 100% correct.

I never understood sx segregation in schools. To me, that's as bad as race segregated schools. Toyama Black University...

Also, to address those talking about mental illness, there has been a growing trend to delist prior mental illnesses that cause no harm to others (ie hmosxuality, transgender, soon transracial and pedosxuality). I don't care as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

"...while some junior high schools are introducing genderless uniforms or flexible uniform codes to support sexual minority students."

Tbought they had been doing that already, since at least the time of Fruits Basket.

Better in the Uni then on the front line with me batting ISIS insurgents.

Ochanomizu has a very mixed reputation and the (already low) educational standards there have been in decline for a long time. They discriminate against men in hiring (blatantly, in public databases and don’t even bother to give a reason), the management imposes arbitrary term limit on teachers so they can fire at will if someone does not tow the feminist line (yes, they check), and the salary for teachers is low but very high for management.

I bet this is move is twofold; one, to get more exchange students who pay full tuition, and two, to create a buzz for the university that has been falling ever since rational discussion was eliminated and any discourse except radical feminism shut down discourse on the subject.

I look forward to seeing how this pans out in future JT stories.

Because the university is using self declaration of gender for the basis of defining male/female. Fine, they can do that but it also means that biologically female person who declares herself a male should not be allowed in school.

Like I said, it's really up to the school and students what their basis of definition is. They could choose to include people who were born as female but identify as male.

That's assuming that a person who identifies as male would actually chose a women's university though. It seems contradictory, but I suppose if they felt safer and more welcome there, they might chose that.

Imagine being such a reactionary that Japan is more progressive than you are

6 ( +8 / -2 )

That would be a pedantic use of logic, but this is Japan so who knows.

It may come to you as a surprise, but some who consider transgender people as people who might benefit more from competent therapists than “do it if it feels good” supporters neither fear nor loath them.

The school is happy, the students seem happy, and transgender women should be happy to be accepted. Perhaps those unhappy with the situation might benefit from some therapy.

Using this logic, women who identify themselves as male should be kicked off the campus.

That would be a pedantic use of logic, but this is Japan so who knows. The decision should be based on what the school and students value about women's universities and whether accepting particular students actually conflicts with those values.

the idea that we can simply choose our gender, absent biological fact, is ridiculous.

The response:

Only for people with an ability to adapt with a changing environment.

Putting these together I get:

”The idea that we can simply choose our gender, absent biological fact, is ridiculous” “only for people with an ability to adapt with a changing environment.”

Is this correct?

Because these seperation of Male - Female was a thing from the past.

Maybe, but I don't really see the harm in them either.

And since they are trying to become "Open Mind" now then why not just become co-ed then?

My understanding is that some women want to study in an environment free from the distractions of men. They're allowing transgender women, because they're women for all intents and purposes that matter to the students enrolled.

How about the transgender males? can they still enroll in this university?!?

If they identify as male, they probably wouldn't want to.

I hope any transpeople reading these comments just ignore the transphobia of some of the commenters. Their ignorant opinions have zero validity and are based on nothing more than personal prejudice.

It may come to you as a surprise, but some who consider transgender people as people who might benefit more from competent therapists than “do it if it feels good” supporters neither fear nor loath them. Quite the contrary. In addition, their opinions are based on the findings of well-meaning, competent professionals and so are ... no more ignorant than yours.

One in 13 people in Japan is estimated to be a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, according to a survey conducted in 2015 by the Japanese advertising giant Dentsu Inc.

One in thirteen. Japan needs to wake up.

Key words: “estimated”, “Dentsu”. Would Ripley believe it?

Could be one in two for all we know. That would explain the falling birth rate.

Strangerland

why not just make the school co-ed and open for every sexes???

Because it's not a co-ed university. I think if they wanted to be, they already would be.

Yeah but that is my question, why can't they just change and become co-ed? Many universities are doing that already. Because these seperation of Male - Female was a thing from the past. And since they are trying to become "Open Mind" now then why not just become co-ed then? How about the transgender males? can they still enroll in this university?!?

Before accepting transgender students, those women’s colleges should start accepting heterosexual male students. Women only universities are anachronism and sexism

Transgender women are women? Really? You may want to listen to what Germaine Greer has to say on the subject;

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-34625512/germaine-greer-transgender-women-are-not-women

If you've got a willie, you're not a woman. Pretty simple for the most part. Nothing to do with phobia- I'm not the least scared of trans people, nor do I hate them. I hope that they can get treatment and lead happy and productive lives. But the idea that we can simply choose our gender, absent biological fact, is ridiculous.

Logically then, I can also change my age and race and height if I feel like it. So, if I want to be a senior citizen, 67 years old, for example, then I am. So, I can start collecting my pension today! Oh joy!

This is a big leap forward in trans rights. Transwomen are women, and should get the same access to education as other women who want to join women's university programs. This is a cause for celebration!

I hope any transpeople reading these comments just ignore the transphobia of some of the commenters. Their ignorant opinions have zero validity and are based on nothing more than personal prejudice.

Why are single gender universities allowed? Discriminatory.

Nobody is asking anyone to live a lie. Just stop thinking the world owes you.

Let it be and see the results...

For all we know, we may have less sexual harassment incidents at that school...

But physical differences can and will change their physical education and sporting activities...

It is difficult to assume or to presume and guess at anything at this stage...

Funny that to qualify as a women, all one has to do is declare themselves a woman. I can wear a wig, put on a flowery dress and don a minimum amount of make-up (none of which is required, by the way), and I can not go to your women's university, join the women's volleyball team, shower and change together, etc. No big deal that I still have a penis because hey, I'm a woman, trust me.

A number of reputable scientists have published studies concluding that gender identity disorder is a fairly severe mental illness. So this college is facilitating people’s mental problems. Not a good situation for the students.

World health organization WHO has removed transgender identity from the category of mental ilnesses in the newest ICD-11 disease classification, which is used all over the world. Gender incongruence is not a mental illness, but a sexual health condition.

[...] evidence is now clear that it is not a mental disorder[...]

Let's say that it was for argument's sake. Do you really think making them live a lie (in their minds) promotes their living a mentally healthy life?

So this college is facilitating people’s mental problems.

How is this a bad thing if their "mental problems" don't hurt anyone?

Not a good situation for the students.

How so?

I'm rather surprised that so many single-gender universities still exist.

including how it plans to confirm whether an applicant is transgender.

A bit of skirt lifting action for the old boys.

Minority opinions on political topics are often subject to derision because they are difficult to refute by fact based argumentation. Does this apply here?

The World Health Organization begs to disagree.

The WHO is not politically driven?

Normalizing mental illness is cheaper and so much easier than treating it.

T must count as 1/1000th of LGBT community.

There is no reason to not account them as women if they qualify as a woman.

Thinking like a woman does not make you be a woman though.

I suppose the old men I see on the train who are wearing women's clothes and makeup identify as women and are "normal"
