and by now.... he has collected more kokumin nenkin than they ever projected. No wonder Japan is bankrupt.
Fighto!
Congratulations on being Number One, Mr Watanabe! Amazing achievement. I would like to see an exact breakdown of his daily diet. Im guessing he follows a strict traditional Japanese diet, tonnes of vegetables, tofu, miso, fish every meal and almost never eating red meat. I hope he can make it to at least 120.

That's right, let's not smile at this story or celebrate the true joy of it in any way.
Let's gripe and moan and exude negativity instead, adding a touch of money-only materialism. Heaven knows the world doesn't have enough of those things.

He is ony getting a kokumin nenkin amount based on what he's paid in while working, and it's not like every individual lives to that age, many pass away at much younger ages so the full burden on the system is based on an average. And I hardly think 100+ is anywhere near an average lifespan.

Amazing. When I was born, he was already 6 years older than my current 53 years.
Mr Kipling
SaikoPhysco.... I’m sorry the drones on this page don’t understand sarcasm.
I thought it was pretty funny. Keep it up.

Fighto!!Today 10:45 am JST
You tend to project a lot.
That’s the reality.

Money paid to this one man is a drop in the bucket.
More will be spent on one state dinner or one flight for Abe to a foreign country for a summit than this man will ever collect .

Congratulations to him. If I have my faculties still sharp, a century would be nice.
This has become highly suspect recently. Some say she fudged her birthdate.
The_True
Uh?
My grandmother is 115 and she dont get the title, hmmmm, I guess Guinness only applies in Japan?

This story is about the world's oldest living man.
Mr Kipling
The_True.... I’m guessing that your grandmother is a woman?
Mr Watanabe is the oldest man.
Unless your grandmother “identifies” as male..
So sorry to assume her / his / their gender.......... :)
geronimo2006
Yeah - I beat you all!
Strangerland
Nope. What was the reason they gave for denying your grandmother?

I don't want to invalidate his achievements.
There is an issue has been present for decades, yet no one bats an eye on it. Whenever the outsiders bat an eye, the Japanese will use the "cultural difference" to justify the wrongness. No different from China's excuse of "you insulted 1 billions of people"

He saw Japan rise to the top of the world, then get beat down again, then go to the top again, then fall down after the bubble and slowly recover. Oh, the stories he could tell.

That’s all good and well, but think for a moment about all of those who didn’t make it that far despite trying.

Watanabe, who is married with five children,
So his wife is still alive?
Maybe I am just a miserable person, but whenever I see these oldies on the TV as oldest this or that and they are surrounded by all sorts of hangers on and there is a big hoo haa and TV and bunting and cake and all, I feel a bit sad.
And for those who think this is joyous, I feel slightly differently. Live to 120! Who on earth would want to?
Jimizo
He could be, cobber, but I remember the woman who lived to 122 in France who was smoking after 100, liked beef, had desserts with meals and enjoyed a bit of wine.
Anyway, best of health Mr Watanabe. I like the name Chitetsu - cool.
kyronstavic
His teeth may beg to differ.

(Raises hand...)
I got a certificate like the one in the picture when my old dog turned 15. She lived to nearly 19, about 90 in dog years.
skinnee
Guinness recognises his achievement. Unfortunately, he is unable to recognise anybody.

Diet has almost nothing to do with how long people live, unless it's an especially unhealthy diet. It's mostly genetics and luck of the draw. Careful eating and exercise may help a bit, but it's not going to push you past 100 unless the genes are there.
I have noted other people around his age crediting chocolate, whiskey, or cigars for their longevity.
SaikoPhysco
Of course its meant as sarcasm.... heck, more power to the guy. I just get sick of the usual crap we all write at times.
Fighto!
Well I'll stick to them, more fun than tofu, konyaku and miso every day. I think your right, DNA is more important. I guess Watanabe-san had old relatives.
Sounds fun also, Bro. But wasnt there some dispute about her age?
Jimizo
That’s right, sport, but I read it was cleared up. She was 122.
JonathanJo
I gather poor Mr Watanabe has passed away, just before his 113rd birthday.
RIP old man, RIP.
