Y750,000 left in 29 mailboxes at Nara condo

About 750,000 yen in cash was found in 29 mailboxes in a condo in Ikoma, Nara Prefecture, police said Saturday.

One resident noticed the money in her mailbox at around 7 p.m. Thursday and notified police, TV Asahi reported. Police subsequently found that 29 mailboxes in the apartment block received money in the mailboxes.

Police said they have not been able to determine if the money was stolen or not. The total amount of money left was 752,195 yen, TV Asahi reported.

The mailboxes are all in the lobby of the building which has 53 apartments. Each of the 29 mailboxes had different amounts of money, ranging from 1,000 yen to 137,000 yen, wrapped in leaflets.

The total amount of money left was 752,195 yen, TV Asahi reported.

That should read: "The total amount of money left that was reported was 752,195 yen...."

Bummer for the ones that got the ¥1,000 package!

Did a criminal on the run stash the money? Will he be coming back to retrieve it later?

Do you really believe a criminal would come back to get his/her money out of 29 mailboxes, which may even be locked ?

I think the story is "at least 752,000 yen was left in letter boxes". Perhaps it was much more. Because, although I've to date lived a fairly good life, I'm not sure I'd be contacting the police if I found Y50,000 in my letterbox. The fact that Japanese people do contact the police no longer surprises me but does make me further admire the mind set of Japanese people. I sure as hell could not see someone in the UK calling the police to report a large amount of money had been mysteriously placed in their letterbox. My word no, it'd be down to the Fox and Hounds for a steak dinner and drinks all round.

What. That was probably someone giving away valid cash for a what they thought was a good deed. Now they police get it and it goes where? Sits in a box for ever? goes in cops pocket, or the government gets it.

Way to go.

if the news was in the San Francisco Chronicles it would probably be titled: $30 left in 2 mailboxes at Oakland condo.

I admire the honesty of this Japanese who dared not to take money that is not his. Fairly distinct from other amongst other.

We shall have to move to an apartment building... Oh ! That's right, we don't live in Nara...

Please feel free to drop by my apartment building!

I wish people would put money in my bicycle basket instead of empty cigarette packs and cans.

Actually, I think you would let police know you got some of the money, despite the temptation to keep it. If you heard that 28 other mailboxes in your apartment building got money and that the police were checking tenants to see how many others got money, would you really say no? Personally, I'd be worried about where it came from. Did a criminal on the run stash the money? Will he be coming back to retrieve it later? Or was it just some generous benefactor?

In any case, if no one claimed it or its ownership couldn't be traced, it would probably come back to the recipient. So honest is the best policy.

A few people received slightly more than their daily salaries. Way to go?

Who reports donations to the police? Even if I found just 500 yen. It's more than what I had before.

"About 750,000 yen in cash was found in 29 mailboxes... The mailboxes are all in the lobby of the building which has 53 apartments."

There are two possibilities. The person responsible for the money in the 29 mailboxes either decided not to give any money to the other 24 people/families in the building, or those people didn't report it to the police.

Well, if money was put in my mailbox I would consider it my money until they prove it was stolen or something.

Bad idea to give it to the POLICE!!

How about, "Thank you!"?
