Japanese comedian Pikotaro, right, receives a certificate of the Guinness World record for his viral hit "pen-pineapple-apple-pen" or "PPAP" as the shortest song to enter the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart from Guinness World Records adjudicator Kaoru Ishikawa during a press conference in Tokyo, Friday. It's not for the Shortest Most Aggravating Song of All Time? :-D

50 seconds of my life that I'll never get back.

Black Sabbath: 50 seconds of my life that I'll never get back.

Not an earworm, then, if it's not N x 50.

Wow! Japanese culture is so deep......

I see so many kids dancing and singing this song. What's so funny about it and what is so great about this song? I really don't get it.

To paraphrase Andy Warhol, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 45 seconds."

A sad, sad reflection on the success of English teaching in Japan.

"I have a pineapplepen ..." or something like that?

Where did the "good old lyrics" go?

I have a pen, I have an apple - uh - apple pen! I have a pen, I have a pineapple - pineapple pen! apple pen, pineapple pen - uh - penpineappleapplepen!

My grand kids, and my HS students as well as some of the teachers, all love this song

Annoying yes, but in hell the muzak is "Let It Go."

Another mockery of the English language to annoy the hell out of English teachers for the next few months just after the 'novelty' of "Why Japanese people!" has finally worn off. I wish that someone would come up with a catchphrase or song which was actually real English for once! It's yet another excuse for the Japanese to treat English as a joke and to laugh it off rather than actually seriously doing something about learning it.

But Atsugiri Jason, the "Why Japanese People" guy, is making bank doing TV appearances. I even saw him doing a Discovery Channel commercial.

Good! Use your aggressive feelings. Let the hate flow through you!

Love Apple Pen. Absurdist, playful genius that has the world singing and dancing.

Richly deserved acknowledgement. Long may it reign!

Silly and fun. Nothing wrong with that.

"Another mockery of the English language"

@asakura, unfortunately anglos have been ruining the English language for decades (lyrics, social media, journos and so on). Pretty low standards have been set, don't expect too much from others. (Also true for other languages btw, poor grammar has become the norm).

Classic Japan Today comments section; Fun Kiddie PoP thing dragged through the mud for not being Rock and Roll or deep enough for the 'adults' here to 'get'. LOL.

I've seen the video and quite magnetic but I don't see any value in watching it. As the Japanese said, it is baka-bakashi. So I don't understand why he received a Guinness World record certificate ... Seem like the standard of value of this world has reached its bottom.

"I have a pineapplepen ..." or something like that?"

They went bye bye a long time ago. Just repeating the word "Umbrella" 34 times won a zillion awards, won a Grammy and sold 6 trillion copies.

I have a Gun. I have a Big Gun. Begun

British singers also love butchering the English language
