A day at the beach

Beautiful beach with the best view. Every ocean by now has lots of trash swimming around, it is sad but it won't stop me from taking a dip. Instead of coming out, you should have taken the plastic plate and put it where it belongs.

My only memory of Zushi is when I got horribly sunburned (I still have the scars), but I can't deny the beauty of this picture. Look at me, I'm living in Hawaii and I'm admiring a Japanese beach.

I have to disagree with JeffLee. I live near Enoshima and there are plenty of restrooms and their are more places for pedestrians than cars and such. Clearly you have not been to the beach pictured above. It has been that way for at least the last twelve years. And about the trash in the water, like Foxie said pick it up and put it in the trash bin. People forget that when others see someone do something, they are more likely to feel like doing the same thing. My family and I pick up all the trash after we go camping or fishing no matter who it belongs to. Monkey see, monkey do. I used to fish in Enoshima quite often. Then they built a small boat dock and a new bridge and trashed the eco system. That has been a few years, so I'm thinking about some catch and release fishing there in the next few weeks. I'm also concerned about the radiation in the water. I hope no one gets sick.

I am going to the beach today!!! Hehe...i love the sea around Enoshima. Its the best place to swim close to Tokyo/Yokohama area. I can't live without swimming at the sea and now it's finally the time. Too bad the majority of the Japanese people only put their legs inside the water and do not actually swim.

You want clean, head up to the beaches between Komatsu and Kanazawa on the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture... long, long stretches of almost deserted sand... a little cold for swimming except in the middle of summer, though, and watch out for idiots racing their cars in the winter.

This IS a beautiful picture of a beautiful place! I'd love to go for a lazy swim there, but the power of the sun is too much for me now :-)

I've encountered industrial waste in the water while swimming there. The last time was a ceiling light fixture for an office that I nearly stepped on. I'm afraid to go back.

I also don't like how the beach vendors burn their structures on Sept. 1 and then leave the horrid debris all over the beach, the lack of regular, organized litter collection, the lack of decent facilities for pedestrians (boulevards, sidewalks, etc.) Too bad. The natural setting is beautiful. The human element needs lots of work.

Ah, wait a minute. Didn't the J-Govt impose some sort of time limit for being in the water after the discovery of the radiation?

Very rare to see Fuji-san during the summer. By the way there is and has been regular garbage collections for a long time, plus lots of good groups volunteering, especially after taifu. If you cannot read Japanese, you can ask around as to when clean-ups will occurr or just jump in and help when you see them going on.

Went to Fujisawa Beach near Enoshima on the 4th July and it was still closed...but went in the water anyway. Soon came out after a plastic plate and shopping board floated past. Go Japan!

There are few nice beaches near here (Sea of Japan side). Some good snorkeling to be had, crystal clear water and lots of fish.

In went to Enoshima last year, and it was absolutely disgusting. The sand was full of trash and broken glass - absolutely filthy. We didnt even go in the sea, as I had no desire to get cut feet or covered in whatever horrible stuff was dumped in there. Enoshima could be a lovely beach resort if it was properly taken care of and developed. The aquarium was nice though.

No way are we going to the Japanese beaches this year - radiation, the threat of tsunami if there is another big quake, and the fact Ive never found a clean one here all mean we will go out of Japan this summer.

I used to live in Fujisawa when I was young and eager under the appleboughs and happy as the grass was green (i.e. before Mrs. Coughalot got her claws in me). I never saw water anywhere near this colour - varying shades of brown were the norm.

But by crikey, there's some goers on that coastline.

@Papigiulio: Go down south to Wakayama. Lots of beautiful beaches there...much better than Suma.

Jeff, did you tweak your color setting for this? It looks really nice, just different than what I would have expected. Polarizer?

The saturation of the photo has been cranked up in Photoshop, hence the "color explosion". Side note: I have found a syringe on this beach while walking with my kids. You got to be careful where you step.

Doesn't look over saturated on my monitor, though I would guess it was bumped up in Photoshop. Also, because this is a fairly wide-angle shot, I'm guessing no polarizing filter on the lens - that would give you a dark band up through the center of the sky. Might be just a curves adjustment or the application of something like Nik Polarizer.

Due to the extreme dynamic range of this brightly lit scene, and the very flat mid-day light, I shot this image in DNG format (Leica raw format). Then I pulled down the highlights to increase the detail in the clouds, followed by a lightening of the shadows on the green hills. The greens were saturated a bit, but no blue channel saturation was applied, and I even toned down the red channel as it was too saturated to start with.

The point of this post-processing was to best represent what I saw through the tinted lenses of my sunglasses.

Nice picture Jeff. Makes me homesick for Yokosuka. I used to ride my bike by that beach all the time.

Zushi wasn't one of the areas that was discovered to be contaminated so no, there won't be any time limit there.

Why the grouchy bad attitude? A tsunami can strike just about anywhere, things don't automatically become safer just because the beach you're on is not in Japan. There are plenty of nice beaches in Japan, it's a shame you've never managed to find one.

You'd do well to take the same precautions at any beach... there are also sharks in the ocean, you got to be careful not to get eaten. ;-)
