A week with Marilyn

American actress Michelle Williams, right, poses with Japanese CanCam model Maki Nishiyama, 26, at an event to promote the film "My Week With Marilyn" at the Imperial Hotel on Wednesday. Williams, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Monroe, said she spent 10 months preparing for the movie, watching every film and TV appearance of the iconic actress. The event was held at the Imperial Hotel because Monroe and Joe DiMaggio stayed there during their honeymoon in February 1954. "My Week With Marilyn" opens in Japan on March 24.

I love the word "CanCam". It actually stands for, I kid you not, "I can campus". ha ha Japan is so entertaining!!

I think they both look quite nice.

Michelle Williams is an Academy Award nominated actress, over here to promote her film soon arriving in Japan.

Instead of allowing her to be promoted, Japan INC. places what appears to be a young woman dressed for a picnic on the beach, for no apparant reason other than she is Japanese, next to her.

To add insult to injury, comparisons are made about their looks.

Where's the respect for the actress?

Um....why is there a CanCam model posing with her? Is she in the movie too?

I was about to ask. I thought it was for videos the Japanese police are noted for.

Ah, it's all perspective and personal taste. I think Japanese women are beautiful and the girl above no exception.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Sorry, but Michelle Williams put herself in the public eye and her looks are a part of who she is, along with her acting talent.

Maybe so, but I think the point here is that out of 31 comments above, a whopping 3 discuss the acting talent (and one of those is in reference to Branagh's performance). It just seems silly when you have a talented actress or actor on stage and all anyone can talk about is who looks hotter, that's all. Particularly when, as in Ms. Williams's case, they didn't gain their success based on their looks alone - unlike this CanCam person who none of us will remember in an hour from now.

I think the Japanese model looks like a scare crow. It is a shame they put her next to a talented and classy woman like Williams.

She was also nominated for an Oscar for her role in Blue Valentine. I will catch this film now that I know she's in it.

Let's get real, Babyish "girl" on left, Gorgeous WOMAN on right.

Ms. Williams has Heath Ledger's daughter. She is equally gorgeous!

i think the japanese girl is much hotter than the old lady michelle

Exactly! God forbid JT put a pic of actress (and Academy Award winner) Kathy Bates up there next to some dumb no-name model. The JT bottomfeeders would have a field day with that one.

No one is disrespecting Michelle when they say Maki is prettier (which she is IMO). What would either of them be doing dressed to the nines (nice dresses btw) and standing before a group of photographers if they didn't know other people were going to comment on their appearance. Even your first post was

'Ms Williams looks terrific'

Your comment was based on her appearance, so no, it's not 'insulting' to make comparisons with the woman standing beside her.

Please calm down. There is no "disgrace" involved. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No further bickering over which of the two women is more beautiful.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's natural that when an actress comes to town her looks will be commented upon. And ironic that she has most recently portrayed a woman originally discovered for her looks, but who was found to have real acting talent as well (well, relatively so).

CanCam girl has lovely toes

Ms. Williams looks terrific.

Gal on the left is cute. Gal on the right looks like plastic.

Girl on the left looks horrible in every way, gal on the right pinpoint perfect. Who can't see that ?

That girl did have a man face on that Gaitame ad but she is leggy

Finally, a comment that made sense. Yes, why would they place a Japanese girl next to her? It's her film, ffs! Take that Japanese girl out of her side and let Ms. Williams' work be promoted in a decent way. Why do they have to mix apples with oranges. I don't care about any other girl than Ms. Williams. It's HER film and I'm interested in the film. It's like they do this in purpose so the japanophiles can have a field day making low ugly comparisons between the two. Japan INC. for ya!

Readers, it is quite common when stars visit Japan for a Japanese celebrity to present a bouquet to the guest, which is what Nishiyama did with Williams. Please do not make a big deal about it.

Look at those feet!

Maki and Michelle suit the photo shoot together.

Gal on the left is cute.

I suppose girls without breasts and O shaped legs are standard of kawaii in Japan. She absolutely flat.

Very nice!

How do you know she didn't gain success on her looks? While I don't think she's pretty, plenty of others do. Hollywood is hardly known anyway for being a place which prioritises talent over beauty and there are multitudes of pretty boys and girls making millions who couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. I like how you dismiss the 'CanCam person' (Maki Nishiyama) despite telling us not to do the same with 'Ms Williams'. Who knows - this person 'none of us will remember an hour from now' could turn out to be a great actress someday. Yes probably not, but stranger things have happened. Kyoko Koizumi, widely dismissed as a throwaway, disposable pop idol in the 80s managed to reinvent herself in the 90s/2000s and become a great actress, certainly better than Michelle in my opinion. At the end of the day, this was a press junket with two celebrities dressed up for the photographers, of course people were going to comment on looks, when that was clearly the focus to begin with.

She is NOT. I have seen real beauty in Japan. Only the ordinary with no real taste would think she is gorgeous. ROFL.

Except she IS. I never said Maki was a 'real beauty', just that she is prettier than Michelle Williams, which she is, LMAO.

Want to see real Japanese BEAUTY? Koyuki and Nakama Yukie are living examples of it. There's nothing "gorgeous or beautiful" about a child wannabe young woman who dresses like a 12 year old in a desperate attempt looking for attention. Take a look at the real Japanese Top Models. Those are what I call beauty. No need for ugly baggy clothes, dyed hair and ugly make up. Of course, I understand, men with asian fetish would think every asian woman is "gorgeous". lol

Nakama Yukie is beautiful, yes, Koyuki, no. When I think of Japanese BEAUTY, I think of Meisa Kuroki, Namie Amuro and Yuri Ebihara. Miki Nakatani and Kou Shibasaki. These are just off the top of my head. Just because Maki is slim doesn't mean she's suddenly a 'child wannabe young woman who dresses like a 12 year old'. Does that mean scantily clad Western women (or even Koda Kumi) is not looking for attention? People can dye their hair all the want, it doesn't take away from whether their faces look good or not. And sorry, I certainly don't have an asian woman fetish, or think every asian woman is 'gorgeous', lol, just pointing out that I think Maki is prettier than Michelle Williams.

She had those real nice pair of legs in that Gaitame online commercial

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Never thought Michelle William was any kind of great beauty... liked her in Dawson's Creek when I was a kid, her character was the most entertaining. Maki Nishiyama is prettier.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I'm Western and I think Maki Nishiyama is much prettier than Michelle Williams. People here just seem to be blinded by the blonde hair, there are plenty of gorgeous Hollywood actresses and singers but Michelle is not one of them.

It's like they do this in purpose so the japanophiles can have a field day making low ugly comparisons between the two. Japan INC. for ya!

Thinking Maki Nishiyama is prettier doesn't mean you're a Japanophile.

LOL You sound like you have a fetish for "young meat" it seems by reading your post. What? Koyuki already passed her expiration date? I certainly think some older women look way better than a woman in her early 20's. Have you ever seen a picture of Yuri Ebihara without the make up layers and her died hair? Have you? You are a man, you have no clue what a hair dye and 4 layers of make up can do for a not so pretty face. Magic indeed! Koyuki doesn't need make up at all. Beauty is not about what clothes you wear or make up, the less you wear the more beautiful. Simplicity equals beauty. The less the better. And you if you that Maki Nishiyama is slim, you must be kidding yourself. I know what is to be slim, FIT and TONED. Maki Nishiyama is unfortunately skinny beyond normal. Why? Normal Japanese girls are NOT like her. They tend to be slim in a healthy way, not bone-skinny like Nishiyama. Big difference there! You need to go out more and look around. This is about Michelle Williams NOT Maki Nishiyama. It's a disgrace to place someone like her next to a star like Williams. At least they could have chosen someone like Koyuki FFS.

The American actress dressed better. The Japanese model again is in typical Japanese fashion of shapeless baggy dress.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

I agree. Michelle Williams is extremely classy while the other girl looks like your typical Shibuya girl.

Anyway, that's a real woman on the right.

I agree, the model on the left looks like a man.

Apparently Branagh does a superb job as Olivier.
