Advantage Uniqlo

Tennis star Kei Nishikori shakes hands with Fast Retailing President Tadashi Yanai at an event announcing a five-year sponsorship agreement between the tennis player and the Uniqlo brand. Nishikori, 21, who just returned from the Australian Open, is the highest profile athlete to be endorsed by Uniqlo. He said: "I want to become the No. 1 tennis player in the world, just as Uniqlo is the No. 1 brand in the world."

Uniqlo can start by giving him a more fashionable pair of shorts to wear.

Nishikori, 21, who just returned from the Australian Open,

Polite way of saying that he lost once again. In fairness, he seems like a nice guy who works hard and has been set back by injuries. But he is very unlikely to ever crack the Top Ten in the world, and so the only exposure they're likley to get is here in Japan. Which begs the question, how many 21 year-old J-guys are playing tennis anyway?

I have always associated Uniqlo with tennis - this is a most wonderful coincidence!!!!!!!

I think "tennis star" is just taking a little too much, the guy has only won 1 atp tour in delarey US a couple of yrs ago if that makes him a star, what the hell do we call Roger and Rafa..... As for uni Qlo sponsoring him that,s great because no one else will....

Thats not the point. You only have to be the best in Japan at something, not the best in the world. Golfers, swimmers, footballers and runners in Japan are the envy of the world. Not because they are great at what they do but because they will earn more in one year of endorsements than most world champions will earn in a lifetime. A great country indeed to be mediocre.

Great that they mentioned here that he is a 'tennis star' otherwise, me, who doesn't care much about tennis since Borg retired, wouldn't have been up to date. This will be a huge commercial for Uniqlo though. Gambatte ne.
