Does 'supermodel' equal anorexic?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

These days, it quite often does. Catwalk models are required to be well down into the "underweight" BMI range or they have no chance of getting hired. That usually means no boobs whatsoever- I have never understood why that is considered attractive by fashion designers. The clothes don't sit well on her upper body at all.

This is a supermodel? Doesn't look appealing at all, looks thin on top, heavier on bottom, odd. Maybe catwalk model but I've seen much hotter Jp women on the streets. Even the jp celebrity looks better.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She looks like a bloke in a dress.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Looks thin? i would suggest Tominaga to buy Morinaga dairy products :)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She should work for Tony Roma`s. The staff could take her around table by table and give the customers a chance for prizes if they are able to count her ribs correctly.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

give that girl something to eat.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I agree with Dog.

"Celebraton Arty"

There's nothing to celebrate about that art.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nice legs and smile... aside from that, I question the 'super' in the title.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well said Dogdog, I was just about to type the same

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Somebody get her some Mcd's.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How is this 26 year old not half as pretty as the 40 year old a few days ago.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The reason why she is a 'supermodel' is probably because she's like six feet tall and does runway stuff. Though the term supermodel has been used for hotties like you see on sports illustrated swimsuit edition, don't necessarily think it means an asian/jp supermodel is chosen based on facial features as the deciding factor. Overall body structure and movements is more important than looks, hence she won't be endorsing beauty products like other prettier Jp celebrity starlets.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes - she looks like a boy in a dress. Only the gay guys that run the fashion shows could think Tominaga looks like a 'super' model. A month at the sumo wrestler training table should get some curves back on her frail body.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

These yojiningen types gross me out, they remind of people I know who are recovering from serious illnesses that have beaten their bodies to within an inch of death & are starting to recover.

Why anyone wud do this to themselves on purpose(excluding those who are truly sick, mentally) I just cant understand

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Look at the way she's holding that bag. That should remove any doubt as to her title.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That is a supermodel?? Maybe she is a hand model or an ear model for high end products... The 40 year old babe shown last time was way more of a babe... And does this 'supermodel' have any visually discernible breasts?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She won't be doing any bra commercials, that's for sure....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Looks like a poorly done drag queen! You sure this isn't a guy?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ai Tominaga is supposed to be about 179 cm in height, or about 5 feet 10 1/2 inches for those Americans who refuse to learn and use what the rest of the world does, and her other "vital" measurements are 80/60/86.

Now why a woman with a chicken chest bust measurement of 80 cm is considered attractive in any way, shape or form is beyond me, but the fashion world seems to like her.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What's so super about her?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

O.K., for the last time people, what is "super" about her is her height, according to pathat she is almost 5 feet 11 inches tall, with heels over 6 feet tall. She has the height and probably proportions to be able to model on the catwalk. Those kinds of models aren't necessarily chosen for their looks, particularly asian/jp catwalk models. Being able to wear clothes well on the runway, at least to the standards of the industry, is more important than facial beauty.

I agree she ain't no hottie in the looks department.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why "super"model has to be a skeleton?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She looks scary on that photo.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thank goodness, no Best Longchampist at this party......

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I know all "super"models are supposed to be tall according to the "fashion industry" but I think they could market better with some REAL women out there. Fat ones, buff ones, short ones, that's who buys cloths. Honestly <1% of Jp women have her proportions so there is no point in her showing off cloths.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I still can't get over the way she's holding her bag. Do you think regular models or regular J-gals can hold their bag like that? No, they sling it over their elbows and run knock-kneed to the station. This Ai Tominaga probably flies there.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow, lot of haters here.

The term supermodel is connected to the paychecks they can command I believe.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

that a dude?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japanese "supermodel" Ai Tominaga indeed. Never heard of her before and I'm glued to my computer stronghold. Supermodels are hot from head to toe and have curves, it's not just a matter of height or slinking into a dress. I'm afraid this is just another case of Japan performing below par on the international stage.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

IF THIS A SUPERMODEL????? No breats, no ass, no legs.... she looks as a boy... a supermodel could be inoue waka... but this... japanese confirm they are weird... somebody could tell me WHY TEY ALWAYS WNAT TO BE SO WEIRD????..., even about fashion?.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

chibaman:

I think she is one of the most famous Japanese models internationally. The reason why she may not be popular in Japan itself, in my opinion, is because she looks too Japanese(!). Eg, she's got black hair, and slightly slitty eyes. I think the Japanese should just stop pretending to be something they're not (ie the cheap Peach John types with cheap dyed blond/brown hair, and fake eyes and nose, courtesy of PS). Another reason why Lucy Liu seems to be more popular in the west than in the east. If you've got slitty eyes, or a single eyelid fold, then be proud of it.

She has curves. Can't you see the hollowed out spaces between her ribs?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Forgot to mention that she is rehearsing for Halloween. I see them in bunches everywhere rehearsing all year long.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow, lot of haters here.

Count me in. Not cute. Not sexy. Her hair looks like something you'd find hanging in a barn. Her bra size is 28AAAA.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This must be the post-typhoon look that will be in next week. Half her dress has been blown away and the other half is dragging on the floor. She just managed to hold on to her bag though.

Clean yourself up woman. You're a mess.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She looks like a contestant to "Miss World Famine"... hey girl please eat something.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

she won & is now ms bone-ist

0 ( +0 / -0 )

haha.. some funny comments here.. poor thing needs a sandwich! with no boobs or bum, and an angular face, she looks like a bloke.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

She IS a super model, whether you like it or not. There appears to be a market for women with her proportions. Humans come in all different sizes, colors, flavors, characters. We can all make our choices. Degrading remarks serve nothing and only reflect on ourselves. What reflects as well is one's silhouette in a tall mirror.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Looks like a very skinny bloke, but then this is how supermodels are supposed to look. You don't find girls like this in porn, as guys really don't fancy them.

Well said, Patrick. And the guys you refer too don't realize these women have hidden features they never get to explore. Ai is beautiful!

UGLY and FLAT, gross....

UGLY and FLAT, gross....

One day you find you have a daughter looking like her and you realize you lack the vocabulary to express your feelings just like now . . .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm sure she has plenty of health problem. Probably faints every morning, has cold feet ,headaches, and lacks stamina.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ai is a typical supermodel---very tall, very skinny, with a masculine face. Clothes drape better on tall skinny preying mantis-types. Designers also dont want T&A to distract from the clothes. The consumer should look at the clothing, not the body of the woman wearing it. Also, angular faces photograph better than round, soft faces. A person can be attractive in real life and photograph badly and vice versa. A face photographs well when the light reflects off of planes, so strong sharp faces are ideal for models. High testosterone in men accounts for sharper jaws and chins and angular faces. Thats why models faces tend to be very manly (ie Gisele)

vettegirl, Thank you, I like your post a lot. You are someone who has something meaningful to say and actually relates to the subject which most posters have not been able to comprehend.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The design is rubbish and has little use off the catwalk. And as for the dress, well it's just hideous.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I like her

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Personally I'd like to see where that leg goes. I don't care how many people say how 'manly' she is.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

presto

I wud have no problem if her look is natural but like most here we believe she is starving herself to look like THAT to be a "super model".......

I`d be willing to bet we are right that she is living off of H20 fumes with a few tea leaves in there for sustenance in order to look like that, she will pay in the end, I highly doubt she eats regular meals & looks the way she does. Its highly unlikely.

IMO she is likely starving herself & her "figure" is not natural, but I will hold out for the slight possibility however small that is that she is for real.

BTW this is my opinion for ALL these freaky skin on bone type "models", the ones who starve themselves totally gross me out, which I suspect make up 99.99999999999999% of the "super models" out there at any given time, no thx

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Many people assume before knowing and etch their thought in electrons on JT for all those who care to see. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

I don't understand those complaining how skinny she is. Most Japanese tarentos or celebrities seem to be around the same overall body shape, except for the height.

vettegirl at 12:03 AM JST - 21st September described in general the requirements for supermodels nowadays, quite effectively. Supermodels are not anymore after the image of Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista or Christie Brinkley (toned, svelte but with curves). Nowadays, supermodels are more after the image of Kate Moss. Fortunately, some steps (starting in Madrid's catwalks) are being taken to prevent excessive glorification of skeleton-esque figures, since models have already died from eating disorders and young (and not so young), impressionable girls fall prey to eating disorders trying to meet the Kate Moss standard.

Anyone remember Twiggy? This is not a new look or some "sign of the times". Simply put, clothing designs are best presented on skinny models. They can flow and create long and sweeping lines.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wasn't born when Twiggy was around. This to put into perspective Twiggy's heyday was a long time ago; however, fashion returns.

It is not true that designs always look best on skinny models. At Twiggy's time, fashion design called for flowing garments that didn't require curves beneath them. Before Twiggy if I am correct, there was Raquel Welch, Catherine Denueve and Brigitte Bardot. Way before them, the Gibson Girl. So yes, there have been times in which curvy women with exuberant bosom and child-bearing hips have been the best figure to present fashion. It seems like both images, the twig and the wasp, alternate in time. I think Sophia Loren and her line of fashion and makeup is an example on how both trends can rule parallel, since she's been around for a very long time by now and is still considered Chic.

Personally (and not being twig) I prefer fashion presented by realistic bodies. Skeletal-esque models are not very realistic, even worse considering the global trends.
