Two Japan Airlines (JAL) flight attendants hold Air Yoshinoya beef bowls which are being served on some international routes from Thursday for three months as part of a collaboration between JAL and Yoshinoya Holdings. Specially designed and packaged to be served onboard, the Air Yoshinoya box separates the beef from the rice until customers are ready to enjoy it. Considering the lower humidity in the cabin, Air Yoshinoya also comes with more sauce so that customers taste the same succulence as the beef bowl served in shops. Air Yoshinoya packaging and tray mats are original designs for this in-flight service while the beef, ginger, shichimi (seven-flavored spice) and pickles served are just as customers would find in all Yoshinoya outlets in Japan.
JAL will serve the meals on flights from Tokyo to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London and Frankfurt in every cabin class.

That sounds horrible to me. I cannot eat that stuff.
I do like how JAL and ANA keep nice young flight attendants.
Yubaru
Well I guess I won't be flying JAL anytime soon, unless they choose to change to Sukiya!
rickyvee
I can't imagine anyone in first class ordering yoshigyu. pairing that with expensive wine or champagne seems ludicrous.

Sukiya > Yoshinoya
Nationalist Reborn
What rubbish! any common Japanese will tell you that Matsuya is the King of Gyudon!
spudman
Thankfully not on any flights going south.
nath
Yoshinoya sucks. Matsuya is great as they accept the Suica but still all-counter.
But Sukiya seems to be the fav now better menu than matsuya and they offfer tables where you pay when leaving. Great for families and their menu is just ...
Badge213
Still much better then the dogfood you get on Delta or American Airlines.
Maybe ANA will counter with Matsuya gyudon ha.

Back on topic please. Posts that do not refer to the JAL-Yoshinoya project will be removed.

Still better food than on any american airline!

http://danieldiaztecles.blogspot.com/Nothing, I hope one day to enjoy this delicious meal on board.

The box design is pretty groovy, I gotta say.
Vernie Jefferies
I enjoy Gyudon. Fast, cheap, and delicious. It's the best Japanese fast food you can get.
cactusJack
Chicken or Beef Bowl?
Albert Lazzaris
I would ask for Matsuya then, that is better.
Andrew Decena
The packaging looks pretty clever. If you can't finish it, you can take it to go.
Tamarama
Thats grand. This might be very facile of me, but I find the girl on the right somewhat alluring......
DentShop
Yet you missed the chance for a beef and box double-entendre!
Tamarama
Ah! I was distracted.....

Yoshinoya food is very ordinary and bland - but it is a favourite of the working classes so fair play to 'em. But then again all other airline food is ordinary. It may just be wildly successful.

wow this is a really cool idea.YOSHINOYA (A Japanese delicious GYUDON (a Japanese style savory beef on rice)) would be fun to eat on trip.and the box is very handsome.I learned new word from this also,it is"succulence ". that is best way to enjoy traditional Japanese GYUDON.

Great, now they are making them wear aprons.
They look more like a housewife than a flight attendant. LOL
oyamaman
gotta love those Japanese housewives
gaijinfo
Wouldn't it be easier to just grab some in the airport and take it on the plane?

Now I understand how JAL justifies its pricey fares...

"JAL will serve the meals... in every cabin class"
They're gonna serve Yoshinoya gyudon in First Class and Business Class?! Ho ho ho! I imagine those passengers will not be satisfied with that, they'll want their wagyu steaks!
LoveNot
The flight attendants look like performers in Chinese opera or kabuki theater. The make up is beyond tasteless.
LoveNot
I am so surprised, Serrano. I expected you to say "They are ridiculously hot!" but instead you preferred to talk about gyudon.
nsg79
Serving Yoshinoya on-board is now THE reason not to fly JAL...why can't they just make their seats and other basic services more decent?! Even Business Class is a joke long-haul on JAL compared to other airlines that cost half the amount JAL deign to charge.
Serrano
Love, the flight attendant on the right looks like she's thinking "You're going to eat this and you're going to like it!"
I can't read the other one at all. Can you?
LoveNot
You are the expert on female faces. But I think her face is apologetic. Anyway I do not understand why you still refuse to say they are ridiculously hot.
Serrano
"customers taste the same succulence as the beef bowl served in ( Yoshinoya ) shops"
I've had Yoshinoya gyudon from time to time and I would not call it succulent. These flight attendants, on the other hand...
LoveNot
Yes, it is ridiculously cheap but beware. Gyudon is not healthy, it is just meat and white rice. With pickles and shichimi at best.
Disillusioned
Woo! Hoo! Yoshinoya gyudon on planes! They have captive customers on a plane. It is the only way they can get rid of that rubbish!
Jan Claudius Weirauch
The probably get all the radioactive stuff from Tohuku, which you can't sell in supermarkets but if you are between borders - who cares? You can blame it on airplane radiation, and nobody can proof it, as I guess you are probably not allowed to take a geiger counter on board.
The first and the last time I ate there was 5 years ago and I good sick, so I would not want to eat it, or only if I can have some "awesome lawson candy"
Serrano
Love, there's also some onion in there.
Fadamor
I imagine it's only one of the options for a meal. Those in first class will have some alternative to fit a snobbier palate, I'm sure.
I see many comments here saying, "X Gyudon is much better than Yoshinoya Gyudon." I'm sure the people at Yoshinoya Holdings have heard this as well, and conceived of this partnership to help get their brand more exposure. You'll note that what the passengers will be eating will NOT be what you buy in the store. The airline food has more sauce.
GaroJ
Yoshinoya is well known for being cheap, JAL is well known for being rip-off expensive. With the amount they charge, you'd think JAL would try to avoid the cheap and quick image of a place like Yoshinoya. I actually like the chain but this tie-up makes me less likely to use JAL.
daisan
yoshinoya on flights? hope it comes with some sutoppa
GaroJ
And the make-up on those flight attendants is clown-level.
mrsynik
Bad enough eating that muck on the ground, let alone on an aircraft. Suppose it is a step up though from the slops that pass for airline food these days.
Qaueckernaeck
Guess it might lure some innocent(?) foreign tourists into the domestic Yoshinoya's. While I am no big fan of YN, at least you get what you pay for.
YuriOtani
Inexpensive does not make bad. Thus the concept of premium pricing of things that are essentially the same as the lower price product. So they are available in all cabins, do not see a problem. If you do not like it, do not order it! A very simple thing and a lot of people in all income groups like guydon. So all in all this is a good thing and not bad, freedom of choice.
Fadamor
I don't agree. "Clown Level" is what some students use. It's "clown level" if it looks like it was applied with a paint roller.
The only apparent makeup here is lipstick and maybe some rouge. There's no obvious eye liner or eye shadow. The skin looks white but the extreme flourescent lighting there is more the cause for that rather than any pasty-white foundation being used. I'm basing that on the fact their arms look just as white as their faces are.
nath
@YuriOtani, I agree, living in America, it seems the cheaper it is, the better. As I have yet to try this dish, I can not say whether I like it or not. From what I've been told by friends over here, Yoshinoya is not that bad, it's just not anything to write home about (like most food). But this is what they say, so when I am over there again, I'll have to give it a try.
mrsynik
Why doesn't the airline industry just give up and source their in-flight catering to one of the major burger chains. On a long haul flight in particular it would keep you busy and help cure the boredom!
wontond
Anything is better when it's being presented by a pretty young lady. Besides. yoshinoya is 10X better than anything served on a North American carrier.
LoveNot
But they should cut it on the theatrical white powder on their faces, it can drop in your dish. To me they look pale as ghosts. Being presented Yoshinoya by ghosts, a big turn off from flying JAL.
garomakaikishi
thats sick man i can imagine the smell in the cabin stuck with it for hours. and everybody having onion breath the whole way.
Serrano
"thats sick man"
Har!
