Kiyomura Co President Kiyoshi Kimura, who runs a chain of sushi restaurants Sushi Zanmai, poses with a 212-kg bluefin tuna at his sushi restaurant outside Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo on Thursday. Kimura won the bid for the tuna caught off Oma, Aomori Prefecture, paying 74 million yen at the fish market's first tuna auction this year.

It's a 74 million yen advertisement for Sushi Zanmai. Not that expensive compared to a primetime TV ad. And it gets covered by all the news outlets.

Annual tradition that makes no real sense. Eventually these poor fish will end up costing extreme money like Abalone and caviar and so on - all due to overconsumption and conspicuous consumption drivers.

$3 a gram for tuna

Sushi Zanmai always wins these major bids, but how do they sell such pricey tuna in their shops?

If they keep killing the "Tuna" in such numbers they will have to "eat a man made tuna" shortly.

Pfffffffff, some people just have waaaaay too much money to throw at ridiculous stuff.

You don't think they actually pay that amount of money, do you? It's Japanese marketing. Sheesh.
Moderator: Mr Kimura most certainly did pay that amount of money for the tuna.

out of local water, lucky fishing boat that caught it. It a dream fish fishing crews dream of catching. But the place is over fish and fishing quoter should be in place for the Northern Bluefin Tuna. Outside of Osaka they now farm Northern Bluefin successfully. This is why I for backing a total ban on fishing Northern Bluefin world wide.

And here's the news: absolutely nothing has changed.
Sweet dreams!

Scoff into it while you can. Another two or three decades and they'll all be gone. "Only after the last fee has been cut down and the last fish eaten will man realise he cannot eat money!"

You are probably right, but $635,000. for a few days publicity is hardly a bargain.

Japan's great consumption of bluefin tuna and other marine species will not last much longer....for their will be hardly any of these animals left to make fishing for them viable. An environmental catastrophe.
