Bloody fantastic result and truly unexpected, but hats off to Eddie jones and the team, probably the biggest upset in world sport history, ashame that most of population doesn't have any idea, of the magnitude of what they accomplished...

Congratulations Japan.

Well done Japan. Shame most of us never had the opportunity to watch it. This sort of tournament should be on free to view TV.

Great teamwork! Congratulation!

Fantastic tactical skills. I see a lot of punching going on during the game. Can someone explain what that tactic is? I do not know that much about rugby, but in pile ups, I could see players elbowing down on something .. probably the ball or a grip lock that some player has. Thanks for helping me understand.

I'd like to congratulate South African team for their efforts. Modern culture praises winners too much and forgets about everyone else.

Brilliant and well done - such a mighty achievement. Apart from beating 2-time world champs, but also one of the real powerhouses of world rugby! Unlike Japan win over Wales at Prince Chichibu some years back (no offence, it was a 3rd XV with senior players in Australia with the Lions), this was a full-blown Spring Bok First XV!

If there's such an equivalent of a Japanese knighthood, Eddie Jones deserves one. fantastic game plan and well executed by the team. Awesome to watch and the last phase to score the winning try was a superb example of ball retention!!

As an aside - wtfjapan and Nemui-san, do not confuse ethnicity with country of birth. Of the previous 2011 and current NZ All Black squad of 31, only 4-5 were born outside of NZ. Refer:- http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2015-09-17-rugby-world-cup-whose-nationality-and-patriotism-is-it-anyway/#.Vf5M7MTXerU

Although Captain Leitch was born in NZ, he's resided in Japan since he was 15 - not like recent imports say to English squad like the Vunipula's.

Photo looks like they won the whole World Cup!

They have done themselves a massive service in taking this match, and there is no reason to think they won't be in with a chance against both the scots and the bald eagles or whatever it is the US team is called.

If they can make the QFs they will be up against it there though, as their opponents will be taking them seriously after what they have done here. This is great for the game though, I only wish Japan 's prime minister took the sport and this event more seriously.

Wow that's great news! Really happy for the team!

Gotta love online comments. Japan pull of one of the greatest performances in Rugby World Cup history, and a handful of people don't even have the grace to say "not bad, well done". Nice to know that it's just a small minority of attention-starved individuals who'll never have the talent to do what the Cherry Blossoms did in the early hours of this morning. Japan. Not bad, well done. :)

I am in total agreement. Just yesterday I discussed the chances of the Japan rugby team with a friend. We did not expect much, but what they achieved here is fantastic and congratulations are in order!

'Cant wait to see Scotland hammer them. Anyway even if they do finish second in their pool, they will play Australia or England and get sent packing. Sorry folks this will not be another 2002 Soccer World Cup performance.'

Let them enjoy the moment. If they reach the knockout stage, that will be equal to the 2002 football World Cup performance ( and the 2010 tournament, by the way ).

As an Englishman, we all know that the Scots support anybody playing against England, so I'll return the childishness.

Come on Japan!

AB's have players who could be identified as Tongan or Samoan. very true AB & Wallabies have recuited many island players not native to those countries, its doubtful theyd be the teams they are today without them

Superbly done, team Japan. Great photo capturing the moment of exhilaration.

Sheesh Nostrodamus, what a bitter, small-minded comment! Regardless of whether they win/lose vs Scotland (how many wins do the Scots have vs SA in a WC?), this was a fantastic victory.

yoshisan88SEP. 20, 2015 - 09:11AM JST It probably qualifies as one of sport's greatest upsets, not just Japan. According to information online, South Africa is 2 time Rugby World Cup Champion. Japan had previously won only once in 24 World Cup outings. It sure is one of sport's greatest upsets.

Japan haven't WON in 24 years, and the last one was against Zimbabwe (another "minnow"). This was a brilliant win!!!

Fantastic job, and a fantastic picture. Hopefully this makes them even stronger.

probably Japan's greatest ever sporting upset!

I looked at some betting odds this morning - Japan were 66/1 against winning. South Africa 1/500 on to win.

Incredible! Great feat despite the rip-a-tissue Brave Blossoms name.

A nice team lifting victory......I'll need to find the replay.

They recruited some good international players and coach.

Doesn't matter. AB's have players who could be identified as Tongan or Samoan. Is that why they are the number one team in the world?

Best photo I've seen on here!

Hopefully this encourages more kids in Japan to take up rugby. Fantastic result.
