You don't "play" the vuvuzela. You blow into it and make a hideous noise. Officials are considering banning it because it's incredibly annoying.

I agree that you don't "play" the vuvuzela, but I doubt it will be banned because it's far too ingrained a thing with South African soccer fans.

im sure i will be tired of hearing the horn by next month...but i actually think it sounds cool. it is refreshing knowing that the "nippon clap" will be drowned out by the horns tonight.

Watching on TV, I think the horns make a pretty cool sound. Appropriate for Africa's first worl cup. What I DO find annoying is fellow Americans using words like "the pitch" "a draw" and "a match" only when they talk about soccer...

Ban it! I can't watch the the world cup because of it, it is banned in most other sports, you can't even hear the whistle of the ref because of the stupid noise!

The noise is very annoying, if a constant noise like that can be stressful on tv I can imagine how it bothers the players. If it's a south african thing then use it only when they play, just as the other countries have their typical chants that they only sing when their teams are playing.

Vuvuzelas take some getting used to, but they add a certain atmosphere to the stadiums, even if half-filled. I agree, much better than the "Nippon, cha-cha-cha" chant. And far better than the Japanese sportscaster's commentary. What happened to the bilingual option?

The only thing worse than a single out-of-tune metal trumpet is thousands of out-of-tune plastic ones.

Debucho, you're right and I sometimes do that. Just a way of showing respect. In America, we have many sports to choose from, with championships running throughout the year every year. We should at least try to show some respect for the championship of the "beautiful game", as it happens only once every four years. Go USA !! That said, there's nothing like football...the American version. Can't wait for the season to start!

There are lots of good things about the Vuvuzela, such as when half-time comes and you flick the channel and the most wonderful silence fills the house. It's such a treat to feel how valuable, how golden silence can really be.

Last night the wife fell asleep with her room buzzing with the sound of the SA beehive. It filled the house. I could just hear her snoring above the racket, so I crept close to her shoji screen and blew my Yama-bushi Hora-gai (Triton shell) at full volume, but in tune with the Vuvuzelas. Even my eardrums were itchy with the vibration. She never even noticed!!! Aaaarrrgggghhhh.....

Big Chris agrrees with Paddy and i also want those awfull things bad. I feel like i can scream for hours to cover up that blinking racket.

Might be good for funneling beer! ;D I remember the plastic horn craze in the 80's in the USA. Every once in a while you will see and hear something like this at US high school football games. Incredibly annoying.

The sound of vuvuzela is terrible , like 10000.00000000 mosquitos !

Me and a few of my buds got tickets to one of the matches, we are going to bring our referee/police whistles and drown out those stupid vuvuzelas. I wish.
