Two capybaras, Nori, left, and Salt, right, are fed bamboo by employees of Japanese confectionery company Calbee Inc at the company's office in Tokyo on Tuesday. The company welcomed the capybaras as PR staff to promote their potato chips.

If I had the room I'd love to have a capybara as a pet. Won't have to keep it in a cage, and it won't be as hard to find as my pet mice I used to have when they escaped. So many amazing creatures on this planet.

@Honest Dictator I second you! I only saw capybaras at a zoo in Hokkaido (I don't think I can mention names?) and my husband ended up having to drag me away because I would have stayed there staring and making cute noises at them for my entire life. So so so cute. I want one!

I have seen them in the wild in South America...it is where they belong...poor things.

Nice to see capivaras (original indian guarani name of this cute animal) protected in some zoos. But they don't belong to cold temperatures as Hokkaido, and they certainly don't eat bamboos.

Capybaras don't make good pets, no matter how cute they look.
They're incredibly social animals, who hate to be left alone or ignored, and get really troublesome if they feel they're not being awarded the attention they think they deserve. A total lack of empathy for the needs of others and very tribalistic, and weary of strangers or those they consider not part of the in-group.
