Cherry blossom centennial

Cherry blossom trees are seen just after sunset at the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial along the tidal basin in Washington on Wednesday. This year marks the centennial of the trees, which were a gift from Japan to the United States in 1912. Due to unseasonably warm weather, the trees are blooming earlier than usual.

Thats a nice pic. Never been to that memorial. Anybody know where the Dogwood trees are in Japan? They were given in return to Japan by the US.

Ironically, the statue of King was carved by a Chinese national and the cherry trees are of course from Japan. I like the blue light above the horizon.

sorry, I don't see the "irony"

Yeah. Not much irony in that - even if you use Alanis Morrisett's definition of "ironic".

The TRUE irony about the MLK Jr. Memorial is one of the quotes they engraved on the side of it. The quote was truncated due to space and ended up portraying MLK Jr. as narcissistic. He was discussing what might be placed on his tombstone when he said,

"If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

In order to fit on the side of the statue, it was truncated to this:

"I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

The resulting uproar forced the U.S. Parks Service to work on changing a quote literally "etched in stone" without destroying the rest of the statue. They still haven't fianlized how they are going to manage that.

I find it incredibly ironic that Martin Luther King Jr., who spent his life fighting racism, is surrounded by cherry trees sent from Japan, a country where it is perfectly legal to racially discriminate against anyone.

Now, how is that comment supposed to be off-topic, mods?!? Really?????
