This will just be another puff piece about how safe Japan is and how dangerous the US is. And by extension how Japan is a much better country than the US. Gets tiring real quick.

Japanese by nature only kick you when you are down. That is why they love to hear about foreign bad news and not their own nasty little society.

This article is about murder by firearm. Not negligent homicide or other classes of homicide. Not suicide by firearm.

Some comments here have been deliberately exaggerated. For what end?

That nbcnews.com link addresses gun-related incidents, not murder. The numbers include use of a gun in self-defense (self-defense is a right) as well as in suicide. These are not murder though the latter category is regrettable,

The nbcnews.com article begins with “Since 1968, more than 1.5 million Americans have died in gun-related incident [emphasis mine] …”

I repeat: gun-RELATED incidents. NOT murders like the one in Highland Park.

Consider figures for 2018 (US CDCP), higher than previous years:

38,390 “deaths by firearms”

24,432 deaths by “suicide” with firearms

Deaths not by suicide (which include various types of homicide that are NOT considered murder) is 37%.

Murder is a serious crime, but this is not the plague of murder that some people would entertain.

Americans are not being mowed down in the streets.

Interesting Redstorm.

How could we come up with statistics that are so different?

Ever wonder how that happens?

Could it be that some “reporter” who gets it wrong has that wrong information (now misinformation) repeated by other “reporters” and so on until the shear number of citations render the original information “true”?

Correction: Covid deaths 1,020,000, not 1,0200,000.

Gunshot deaths, 1990-2019, 40,000.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

More Americans have died from a bullet than Covid.

Not during the same time period. But, in total? Yes.

Gunshot deaths in USA, 1990-2019: 40,000

https://www.statista.com/statistics/258913/number-of-firearm-deaths-in-the-united-states/

Covid deaths in USA: 1,0200,000

NYT, 5 July 2022

If one uses 1990-2019 as a base and works back to 1789 (statistics are not available, but it’s unlikely gunshot death exceeded this figure when the population was much smaller), gunshots deaths (excluding wars) are under 300,000.

Redstorm, your post is BS.

Before this demented guy murdered and wounded people at a Fourth of July celebration he let a wide audience know he wanted to kill people and to die. Apparently no took him seriously, including whoever sold him his guns. It's important to take people seriously, especially when they are dangerously weird.

Never see actual footage of the incidents. Just people running around.

What are you trying to suggest? That this is “fake news” by “crisis actors?”

Given the unexpected nature of shootings, and the understandable hesitation to stick around long enough to record the shooter would be the reason, I reckon.

Even in war footage, there is very little footage of a shooter for the same reason. I mean, there’s no shortage of videos of soldiers/Marines unloading their weapons, but hardly any of whomever is shooting back at them. Because exposing yourself to get a few seconds clip of a distant shooter is not worth getting lead poisoning in the skull.
