Lets spread the knowledge; It should be "Lunar New Year" not "Chinese new year". Mangolia, Vietnam, Bhutan, Tibet, Burma, Nepal etc countries also celebrates this Lunar new year.

I think the reason that people refer to it as the 'Chinese new year' is because it orginated in China, not to suggest that it's only Chinese people who celebrate it. A bit like how the term Arabic numerals isn't meant to suggest that they are only used in the Middle East.

It's Chinese "Lunar New Year celebrations" because Chinese people are celebrating "Lunar New Year" in Chinatown.

Many local southern CA communities in the LA area always celebrate the lunar new year too: Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Walnut and Rowland Heights.

i guess Chinese characters shouldn't be called "Chinese characters" because Japan uses them, right? I wonder what "kanji" means. I guess in America, they speak American and not English, right? Quit the pc. Let's spread the knowledge; this new year and festivity is based on the Chinese calendar and Chinese zodiacs.

I googled this and apparently the Vietnamese New Year was yesterday (Feb 8th), the Nepali New Year was Nov 12th 2015, the Burmese New Year is April 17, the Cambodian New Year is April 14, the Lao New Year is April 13. It seems like they are all based on the Lunar New Year but each of their calendars have drifted off bit.

Mogul conquered China and assimilated with Chinese culture. Conqueror Genghis Khan loves eating his own horse with boiled soup. Chinese hot pot and Japanese Suki are descendants of Mongolian hot pot. Vietnam and Burma have large oversee Chinese community. The celebration are made by Chinese diaspora. Burma has own traditional new year known as water festival similar with Thai Songram water festival.

In San Francisco, there is the largest Chinese new year parade and longest dragon dancing on the road. No dragon from every part of the world beat San Francisco dragon. Toronto and Vancouver Dragons from Canada look magnificent however it can not blow the fire as San Francisco dragon. Lunar new year in Thai, Burma, Laos, Vietnam will make the audience excited.

Nagasaki and Yokohama and Taiwan are not bad for eating out and having festive new year atmosphere. Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines are a bit boring for lunar new year.

Mainland China is the most boring and unenjoyable place for lunar new year celebration. Cities are deserted as ghost town. Most of the shops closed down. Some tourists with no cooking skills have to play the hunger game.

With China's economy rapidly losing steam, this may be the last Chinese Lunar New Year when tourists from China can indulge in buying spree in Japan.

Japanese retailers who have expanded their businesses on the assumption of everlasting Chinese consumption will have a hard time.

You were right! I think you were referring to the deadly stealthy attacks by Vietcong in 1968 Tet. You know that history; those who gave you thumbs down don't.

You mean going from the kind of growth rate mature economies would kill for, to the kind of growth rate that would make them drool? Japan's economy has been you-know-what for decades now. I still see hordes of Japanese tourists the world over. Relax.
