In 1971, President Richard Nixon asked Baker to fill one of two empty seats on the U.S. Supreme Court. When Baker took too long to decide whether he wanted the appointment, Nixon changed his mind and nominated William Rehnquist instead.

He was a GOP member but was well respected by both GOP and DEM members..

One of the last Republicans who knew the art of the compromise. It's something both parties seem to have forgotten about lately.

How come I did not know about this until now? O dear, he was one of the greatest US Republican Senators. You know I am a Democrat, but I sure miss someone like him who has done so very much for both countries.

Baker most famous quote: "What did the President know about Watergate and when did he know it?" He did so much for his country.

I met and worked a bit with Mr. Baker in '87 in Venice while he was Pres. Reagan's Chief of Staff during the G7 Summit and even had breakfast with him. So many years later meeting him again here in Tokyo, he graciously pretended to remember me; extremely personable gentleman, RIP.
