Oh, good grief people! This shrine has been there for over 500 years and is open every day. Why do you all have to go at the same time? Do they actually believe it will bring them good luck or is it just some kind of unwritten duty. Standing in that cue for hours does not seem very lucky to me.

I recommend arriving before 7 am. Never very crowded at that time. By the way, Sensoji is a temple but some people line up for Asakusa jinja, which is a shrine just to the right.

Not much fun. but even fairly "enlightened: friends of mine like to go to shrine or temple on NY day, despite knowing it will be hugely crowded. Reason - what's what we do......
