Japanese pop singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, center, attends the opening ceremony for Universal Studios Japan (USJ)'s "Universal Cool Japan 2016" attractions lineup in Osaka on Thursday, ahead of its official launch Friday. "Universal Cool Japan 2016," a continuation of last year's ultra popular event, features four revamped attractions based on popular Japanese manga and anime series and a brand new thrilling ride exploring the virtual reality of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's world. The singer, who was appointed a special PR ambassador by USJ to promote the attractions, told Japan Today in a short interview prior to the ceremony that she was thrilled to act as an ambassador and looks forward to doing her best to promote the event further. "Universal Cool Japan 2016" runs through June 26.

If you make "Cool" hotter, as the blurb says, it becomes tepid.

もっとアツく ----- motto atsuku ----- warmer

I don't think anyone there knows what any of it means... :-(

"Cuteness on Duty"?? What does that even mean? Is the writer trying to suggest Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is cute? That's a stretch. And isn't this event suppose to be about "Cool"? Or is cute the new cool in 2016?

a mismatch between cookie monster and KPP in the second picture

Bad choice to represent "cool Japan", unless it's cool to be intentionally freakish and alienating, but I wish her the best.

Why does anyone think she is either cute or cool? She is neither. Though she does have some originality, unlike most of her peers in the Japanese entertainment industry.

theeastisred: "Though she does have some originality,"

Well, until you take into account that she is mostly just trying to imitate Lady Gaga.

Utterly pointless.

You're basically saying, We aren't interested in attracting the average foreign customer to our park, which desperately needs more customers, because at least 95% of the average foreign tourist does not care to experience KPP's world.

USJ needs help.

Universal Studios in America has updated itself three times over while USJ has only changed once, when the added Harry Potter. The Biohazard attraction is a haphazard experience and these anime/manga tie-ins look poorly made and are just thrown into the park without care for aesthetics or overall experience.

The New York street scene at USJ looks just as dirty as the real NYC streets. Backdraft experience was great over 20 years ago, so was Back to the Future, T2, but my god, update!

Make legitimate new attractions instead of trying to be cheap and throwing together junk as passing it off as new like they did with the Attack on Titan "attraction" which was seemed thrown together without a real purpose.

I'd love to buy USJ and fix it up. So much potential and so many newer film properties that could be turned into great thrill rides.

Romaji question: The caption spells her name "Kyary". Is this correct? I would think it would be "Kyari".

Cool Japan like the Cool Japan program which is tunneling our tax money to useless program while filling up some people's pocket in the middle ?

No. The article clearly says that Universal Studios is doing this promotion, not the government.

The furthest thing from "cool" you could get.

The only ones who know and use this slogan "cool Japan" are Japanese people. Japan may be safe and cute but I don't think too many visitors to Japan would describe it as "cool"...

The phrase or title "Universal Cool Japan 2016" would automatically lose some cool points. They should seriously rename or even rethink the idea of "Cool Japan" in general.
