Japanese are becoming too poor to shop at department stores even at prime locations.

Japanese ultranationalists around here are too proud to accept such a reality.

Doesn’t bother me, I find Tokyo fairly ghastly and soulless. I love Osaka for it’s diversity and friendliness, especially where I live near Namba.

Someone mentioned Takashimaya, well our local one is great for decent priced veg, often go, On rainy days when many stay indoors. Loads of stuff is half price in the evening, we often buy lovely fish and meat there. Dunno about Tokyu place, but most things seemed more expensive in Tokyo than Osaka.

That’s what we need… more luxury hotels and expensive apartments that only one percent of the population can afford…; Tokyo sure loves rich people and their money…; sigh

And as opposed to what? Poor people and their lack of money? It’s a business, deal with it

Yep falling population and more high-rise apartments and shops. The head in the sand mentality continues.

The department basement was conveniently near two train lines where you can grab food quickly and go. Shibuya Stream is father away.

Shibuya is going to be even more cooler when all the development is finished.

How does everyone like the new Yamanote line platform - Shibuya station?

Grand Central Station New York, Southern Cross in Melbourne, Union station Chicago, St. Pancras London, New Castle Central, JR Shinagawa, JR Kawasaki…high ceilings are the way to go.

Thumbs down for Shibuya and Shinjuku.

I suspect the same will slowly start to happen to Takashimaya, Odakyu etc. These stores are only suitable for older people who put a huge emphasis on customer service. Most of the staff in these department stores are over the age of 60 as well. Enjoy your early retirement!

“ Staff at the Tokyu Department Store's flagship store in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward bow on Tuesday night as the store closes for good after operating as a landmark of the area for 55 years. It will be replaced by a 36-story tower consisting of specialty stores, a luxury hotel and apartments. The new building is scheduled for completion in 2027. “

And all those people losing their jobs just bow. How pathetically archaic. And all those people losing their jobs just bow. How pathetically archaic.

What would you like them to do - start kicking over mannequins while screaming obscenities?

I saw the pictures of the new development. It looks really cool. Shibuya is going to be even more cooler when all the development is finished.
