Desolation

A wrecked car is seen in Minamisanrikucho, Miyagi Prefecture. More than three months after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, people are still in dire need of assistance, say members of OGA for Aid, which has been in the field providing assistance daily based on the motto "no person left behind."

The red cross is tied up in RED Tape same as any big organisation, money trickles through at a very slow pace and most gets skimmed/filtered out before getting to where the donor intended it to end up. Shame these large organisations are so disfunctional and just great big soak holes for generous/sensitive folks hard earned coin.

Perfect example is the sponsorship involvment with akb48 or what ever they called, just a waste of money (other peoples money)

I would rather just walk up to someone in the area that needs help and give them a handful of cash atleast that way you can see where your coin is going, and it isnt going to end up lining some self important dick heads pocket

I'm beginning to think I made a mistake in contributing money to the Red Cross. Perhaps a different group would have been better.

Has the Japan Red Cross handed out any more money yet, or are they still deciding on what to hand out?

They spent a bunch of money on an AKB48 promotional event to donate blood.

Export Expert - That is exactly what I did. I gave money to the person who needed it right then and there. It was to people in Kessenuma. I by jeans from them. The factory is no more. They received my donation immediately. Thank goodness they are doing well compared to others in this travesty.

Are people still under the impression that the Red Cross just hands out money to victims? They always (at least here) deal with support services for the victims and basic survival necessities. I don't know of any time where they just hand out cash to victims. If you're waiting for them to start giving out wads of yen to victims, you're in for a VERY long wait.

Fadamor, good post! People I believe have a misconstrued idea of the the Red Cross mission is in the first place.

This is a link to a pdf file from the Red Cross on some of the work they have done so far in the aftermath of the disaster http://www.redcross.org/www-files/Documents/pdf/international/Japan/JapanEarthquakePacificTsunami_TwoMonth.pdf

Absolutely stunning. Seems like they have made great progress cleaning up the mess. Hope this is representative of the whole area. It was the same in Kobe in 1995. City leveled in January, no sign that anything happened by the end of the year except that the elevated Hanshin Kosoku was still closed, but even that re-opened by mid-1997, if my memory helps. A slightly bigger undertaking in Tohoku but all the bests for the people and the construction folks. Probably the only time I do not mind my tax money goes to construction firms. At least the folks on the ground deserve it. Now, if only TEPCO could finally fix that nightmare.
