who are those idiots to say what is disgusting and what isn't??

I happen to love natto as do my wife and son. (daughter still breastfeeding) I don't find it disgusting at all.

Dozen of foods likely to provoke extreme disgust in many people -- but considered palatable, even precious delicacies, in their home cultures went on display Wednesday as the Disgusting Food Museum made its world premiere.

Well then you shouldn't have a museum with a name like that. Its stupid and offensive.

Its stupid and offensive

Lighten up. It’s hardly hate speech.

Natto divides opinion in Japan. My coworker, a Kansai woman, finds natto disgusting. I’ve heard her debate this with other coworkers. Some agree, some disagree and others aren’t particularly bothered.

It’s fun.

I love natto. Recently I have been adding chopped, raw garlic and hot chillies from my garden to it. Delicious, and super healthy.

I hope they have included animal flesh, enriched with the adrenalin that comes from lifelong suffering, and its last moments of terror and pain? That's pretty disgusting.

Thank you for making me laugh!

I didn't say it was hate speech.

Natto divides opinion in Japan.

Exactly. Opinion. But a museum declaring that a certain food is disgusting is not opinion.

My coworker, a Kansai woman, finds natto disgusting. I’ve heard her debate this with other coworkers. Some agree, some disagree and others aren’t particularly bothered.

But people don't put up museums and display food as disgusting. I find horsemeat disgusting and do say so. But to put up a museum and DECLARE that a particular food is disgusting? No.

Of course it’s an opinion. They are giving their opinion that Natto is disgusting and putting it on public display. Journalists often give their opinion to the public in an article which may offend many. On a more minor level, you and I give our opinions in writing on this site where the public can read it and possibly be offended.

Might you not offend people by stating in writing, on display for everyone to read, that horsemeat is disgusting?

Aren’t you ‘declaring’ to the public that horsemeat is disgusting?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Of course it’s an opinion.

No it’s not an opinion. Museums not Places of opinion They are declarations.

They are giving their opinion that Natto is disgusting and putting it on public display.

Again, Museums or places to state facts. Museums are no places for you to engage in public discourse. And this is not even an engagement. They are declaring something to be true When it is a matter of opinion.

Journalists often give their opinion to the public in an article which may offend many.

Journalist or not museums in case you didn’t know. And anyway, what you are describing is yellow journalism. True journalism is unbiased. So if you want to call this a yellow museum go ahead

On a more minor level, you and I give our opinions in writing on this site where the public can read it and possibly be offended.

Might you not offend people by stating in writing, on display for everyone to read, that horsemeat is disgusting?

Only I didn’t . You’re playing with facts. What I said was I find horsemeat to be disgusting and I clearly stated that it was my own personal opinion. I did not put up a display declaring it to be disgusting. It’s completely different

Aren’t you ‘declaring’ to the public that horsemeat is disgusting?

No I’m not. I said that I found it’s disgusting. You cannot declare something to be disgusting because it’s a matter of opinion. The museum is trying to declare something that’s an opinion as fact. So are you

0 ( +3 / -3 )

No it’s not an opinion. Museums not Places of opinion They are declarations.

This isn’t the British Museum or the Smithsonian. It’s a bit of fun. Of course food tastes are subjective. To think this place should be judged on those the level of the British museum is plain silly. We are talking about what foods many people find disgusting. Very subjective.

I did not put up a display declaring it to be disgusting. It’s completely different

Your opinion that horsemeat is disgusting, or you find horsemeat to be disgusting, is now on display for all to see. It’s open to the public. This place ‘finds’ Natto to be disgusting and displays it.

I think most people are smart enough to know good tastes are subjective.

food tastes are subjective. To think this place should be judged on those the level of the British museum is plain silly.

Only this museum does not say that. It doesn’t say which group of people find them disgusting. Support that is plain silly

We are talking about what foods many people find disgusting. Very subjective.

Then you might as well put every bit of food in that museum because there isn’t any food on this planet that many people don’t find disgusting.

Pearls Before Swine. There was a time in japan when natto was only eaten in Kanto. A friend who is 87 and hails from Okayama, wouldn't eat it if you paid her.

Is there any dog meat on show? Very popular in Switzerland as well as all countries in Asia--apart from Japan.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Nothing offensive/disrespectful ('disgusting' very much tongue in cheek here), they even mention their own 'Surstromming' https://disgustingfoodmuseum.com/

Love the idea.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Root beer and Twinkies are in that museum

See https://disgustingfoodmuseum.com/

The

Casu marzu – maggot-infested cheese from Sardinia

would do my head in - and nose and stomach

Natto is understandable, but how could they include something as innocent as Vegemite (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-31/disgusting-food-museum-to-challenge-perception-of-disgust/10425446)?

It seem most cultures have their nose (or tongue) out of joint over this place.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

All, you are not seeing the intent of the museum due to the limited and oughtright bad reporting of it on this site. The museum has foods from a wide variety of cultures including Sweden. The intent is to show people that what you like can be seen as disgusting by others, Haggis is there which I like and many hate. They are also asking for input and suggestions from people as an ongoing work. They are not being prescriptive as to what is or is not disgusting, as that would be contrary to the whole intent of the exhibition.

Sorry, banned predictive text again, the first word should have been Ali.

Hold on a minute here. As a 米国人, I'm in a minority, but Ethyl and I buy natto with our own money. We love natto more than a human being should. From the first time we had it in Sendai, we said, what?! This stuff is great!! Here's how I like it: put the included sauce and karashi on, stir a bit, and I eat with a spoon! That's all. Don't need rice, nothing. It's like eating raw oysters. Don't need nary extra spices, sauces (except the afore mentioned). Speaking of raw oysters, anyone who slurps them down do not love raw oysters. They are meant to be chewed and enjoyed, savoring the real ocean flavor. Natto same, meant to be eaten as naturally as possible, to enjoy the mild earthy true vegetable flavor. Mmmmmm... 納豆、納豆、さ、手作り美味しい納豆いかんがですか? えええええ、納豆四つください。

I am real angry about this so called "Disgusting Foods Museum". Natto is NOT disgusting. In fact, it is delicious and nutritious, Good bacteria helps the stomach and intestines. I am sure these judges in Sweden didn't try natto, or understand the long history. Tohoku people eat Natto more than anyone in Japan, by far. I love natto on rice.

Is it available in Australia?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@ jimizo. Probably. USA definitely. And probably Sweden too, which makes it strange the judges must not have tried Nato. Because its not disgusting!

Maybe so. I’d like to thank goldorak for the link to the museum. The article does give a bad impression of what the museum is all about .

And don’t worry about the misspelling- sometimes my posts come out weird. Anyway, let’s pick this up tomorrow morning guys. The little ones are being difficult tonight.

good night to you all

@Ganbare Japan

Have you not seen it in supermarkets in Australia? I know one of my uncles in the UK asked me about it and was looking for it after reading about its benefits to health.

I think putting it in the disgusting food museum may make people around the world more curious about it and find out more. I know I like to try things regarded by some as disgusting.

I even tried Budweiser.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Nato is fine. There are many food that are far more disgusting than Nato. They are probably also in that museum as well. For example, tarantula and witchetty grub. Of the 2, I would "probably" try the grub but tarantula would be too much for me. Since it is JT, it would probably only point out the one that are Japan.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@ jimizo, British Blood pudding should be in this museum. Truly disgusting. Why pick on natto.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Jimizo, I am adventurous, but Budweiser is a step too far! :)

Ganbare, don’t get your knickers in a twist! Anyway black pudding is lovely fried in a full English breakfast, or as a snack boiled with strong English mustard!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

jimizo, British Blood pudding should be in this museum. Truly disgusting. Why pick on natto.

Yes, some people regard black pudding as disgusting although it didn’t originate in the UK. It might be in there along with other food around the world people find disgusting. Some people find natto disgusting too, including some Japanese people. I think natto is unpleasant to taste and stinks but it’s healthy.

Are there any Aussie foods you think should be in there? I know Aussies tend to love their vegemite. I like it but marmite is far better ;).

Marmite and vegemte could be contenders.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I think I read that Marmite is already in there, the wife loves it, many people hate it, but that is the point of the museum.

”Bees make honey, Wasps make Marmite!” :)

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Exactly. A bit of fun.

Me and my wife love Marmite. Cheese on toast with marmite. Food of the gods.

"who are those idiots to say what is disgusting and what isn't??*

Exactly, exactly! I mean, just because natto smells like... um... and it looks like... um...

OK, well I will admit the first time I smelled and tasted it ( I'm actually surprised I tasted it after smelling it, haha ) I thought it was absolutely disgusting, but now... put it this way - I wouldn't seek it out, haha I will admit it is healthy especially if you mix some chopped negi in it, and it's really cheap, but that slimy texture...

But I would eat natto any day over shirako.

"It's like eating raw oysters"

Natto and raw oysters are two completely different foods. Who would eat raw oysters when you can cover them with egg and breadcrumbs, deep fry them and then smear tartar sauce on them? lol

"I even tried Budweiser"

This guy from Wales I know calls that piss, haha

1 ( +1 / -0 )

British Blood pudding should be in this museum. Truly disgusting. Why pick on natto.

Try some natto on black pudding. Seriously. It's a favorite of mine.

I don't get the jibes at the museum. The food on display is clearly considered disgusting by many people, not necessarily by the museum staff.

They ought to include macaroni cheese. That's really disgusting, especially the stuff I was forced to eat at school.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

In Australia, we have vegemite, which I love, but I must confer that Marmite is more disgusting!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

They are also asking for input and suggestions from people as an ongoing work.

For Japanese visitors, they need a liquorice corner. They can send it all to me when the exhibition is over.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"Root beer and Twinkies are in that museum"

Who in their right mind doesn't like root beer? haha A whole lot better than that cola crap, haha

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"Try some natto on black pudding"

Yikes!

"marmite"

liquorice

Oh, yes.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Was surprised they had my beloved salmiakki on display... not surprised about sheep's heads, cow stomach and other local delicacies though. One man's owl is another man's nightingale I guess.

Take it easy, folks. I guess there's a treat and a yuck for everyone there.

I wonder if they have marzipan there as well - I was told many Japanese hated it...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well, a museum with an adjective in its name like "disgusting" is obviously not going to be serious.

I wonder if they included lutefisk. That is part of my heritage and Scandinavian immigrants where I'm from hold onto it as a kind of joking way to connect with their heritage. We're quite proud of how nasty it is, my hometown has an annual lutefisk-eating contest, all contestants are celebrated for their bravery. Perhaps understandably, it is much less popular in its country(s) of origin.

Japanese people who love natto and are offended could just think of it as an honor, as Norwegian Americans do--chuckle a bit at the first crazy ancestor who thought to invent such a thing and embrace the yuck factor (even just aesthetically, it is not a gorgeous-looking food) with pride!
