Dreamliner

ANA and Boeing officials celebrate the start of the assembly of the first 787 Dreamliner for commercial flight at Boeing's plant in Everett, Washington, this week. ANA became the launch customer of the 787 program in April 2004, when it placed 50 orders for the aircraft. The first 787 is set for delivery to ANA in the first quarter of 2010. The Dreamliner has 865 orders from 56 airlines, making it the fastest-selling all-new jetliner in aviation history.

As far as I know, Boeing still hasn't got a Dreamliner up into the air for a test flight.

Good luck.

just leave the sake on the ground.

so this is 'sake ceremony'...(?)

This airplane will make our travels more comfortable. Probably should wait for the kinks to be found first. The manner of production is interesting and global. It is not just American technology but is one for the world. Global enterprises really do need to transcend national lines in their image so as to reinforce the concept of one human family. Most technology now is created as a group effort from all.

"Probably should wait for the kinks to be found first"

I sure hope one of the kinks isn't that it can't actually fly.

Of course Boeing is 99.999% sure it will fly. But they won't know 100% for sure until it does.

Oneforall:

Do you have the seat layout, size of this jet?

Might be a way to pack more cattle in a bigger car with the same seat space you have now.

Unlike the a380, this is the airliner that I really would like to fly on. go boeing!

Happy Flight! (Where's Haruka Ayase?)

Why are they wearing those dorky goggles? Sake fight?

I find the airline industry (the manufacturing part at least) to be very interesting. The two players (Boeing and Airbus) seem to stagger from extreme to extreme. Twelve months ago, the media was writing off Boeing, with everybody an expert declaring that the A380 was the must-have plane. More recently, however, given the teething problems of the Airbus plane, some people have been calling it the A180 (the aicraft oftening turning 180 degrees and returning to the hangar for emergency maintenance). Now, Boeing seems to be back on the road to recorvery, with this new aircraft the "fastest-selling all new airliner) in history. I wonder what general opinion will be in 5 years from now.

On another note, Boeing must be pretty happy with customers such as ANA, who have tended to be very loyal over the years.

Just don't drink while you're flying ok! Please keep in mind for safe flying.

Altria

They're inside a factory, an industrial hazard area probably requiring safety goggles.

So correct me if I am wrong.

These guys are in an industrial area, they open up a keg of Gekkeikan and then start "the assembly of the first 787 Dreamliner for commercial flight"

It makes you wonder.....

Probably a good idea if there's welding going on nearby!

Yes, people love to bag the A380... but there they are, flying regularly if not with some teething issues. Sarge: You're correct. Not even a single test flight yet, so I imagine delivery is several years away. I bet a lot of Airbus airplanes will be sold until then.

Damn the first one? It's gotta have problems you think.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am disappointed that ANA couldn't arrange for a few "tarento's" to be at this event. Or at least a few of their hosties.

The 787 was designed much like the 777 which when it debuted, was flawless. Without testing of any kind, only computer modeling, it taxied out and took off, then performed many manuvers without a hitch.

The 777 was such a success, they created the even better 787. It's a luxury style airliner, designed for larger seats and more space all for comfort yet it can hold more passengers then the 777 and it's even more efficient.

Look on Boeings site, they have some video of the new 787 layout.. it's luxurious.

Why the disdain for the A380?

@societymike

There are always problems in production and testing - the only issue is whether they come to the attention of the general public. The Dreamliner has had problems with the fasteners used to join aircraft pieces together, the A380 had wiring problems.

"it can hold more passengers then the 777"

Say that again??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Composites haven't been properly tested. People who fly on this will be guinea pigs.

Good catch roomtemperature!

I'm really looking forward to flying in this plane. Unlike the Airbus and the A380, Boeing actually seems interested in improving the passenger experience.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And the airlines counteract that improvement.

Sorry, no. A friend, now a pilot at Frontier Airlines, was chief flight engineer for the 777 project and the 757 before that. The 777 was not designed without testing. In fact he warned them that they would have problems with the 787 without testing all the electronics before finalizing the designs. And that has been one of the major problems with the 787 project.

That's true of any airliner, regards of it's size or design. A plane is only as comfortable as the carrier will allow it to be.

Kumbaya. Boeing and Airbus planes have been built this way for about twenty years now. This is nothing new.

I don't want to fly on any freshly designed plane for at least 5 years until we see if it was screwed together properly.

Well, I flew Singapore Airlines last sat with A 380 and have to say it was luxurious: legspace enough (which I think does not depend so much on the airplane but the companies order), a big clear screen monitor, huge amount of movies (some new, more older), TV-programs and music, not to mention games, , plugs for I-pot, video etc, but actually thats not for the A 380 alone, at least according to their homepage. But looking at the wingtips during takeoff does feel a bit uncomfortable, cause the wings are of rather soft construction and the far-out ends go up before the plane actually goes of the ground. And for that kind of construction to take more time than planned is not surprising

@Seawolf

Nice report.

But looking at the wingtips during takeoff does feel a bit uncomfortable, cause the wings are of rather soft construction and the far-out ends go up before the plane actually goes of the ground.

That's because the wings are a bit bigger than those of previous jets - so the end of the wings flex a bit more.

Can't wait to see that myself.

The 787 will be a much more comfortable ride. They'll be able to have more pressure in the cabin (less ear popping) and much higher humidity.

The problem with the A380 right now is it's so very big at a time when airlines are having troubles filling seats. The A380 fulling loaded can make massive amounts of money for an airline. An A380 lightly loaded can loose massive amounts of money for the airline too.

The 787 is a smaller plane. It holds less people than a A330 or 777. It competes with smaller versions of the 767, though it's range is fantastic. Test flight is next week.

That being said you ride the 787 in style, I would expect the first planes will serve premium long haul routes. Depending on market conditions the tickets might even be slightly more expensive.

Comparing A380 and 787 is pointless. 787 should be compared against A350XWB. A380 had its own share of issues but 787 has a rocky road ahead as well. It will finally undergo test flight in a few weeks, but a big problem persists; the 787 does not achieve its advertised performance due to the serious overweight issue, thus the airliners will not be able to benefit from the reduction in the operating cost initially proposed. ANA is said to have been given a huge discount because of this.

Boeing shares are 50 percent below peak levels at around USD 50.

Boeing should go slow on spendings until shares prices show signs of going up.

News from Flight International:

Qatar Airways has begun the final countdown to the termination of its Boeing 787 order after losing patience over negotiations about delivery delays.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh look - now the dreamliner's flight tests have been delayed due to a newly-discovered structual weakness in the fuselage.

What were you saying again?
