These guys can carry an amazing amount of cans in large bags on their bicycles. My local one seems to have only one tooth and calls out "Good morning, thank you" every time he sees me.
Anyone know the legality of this? Not to be a dick about it, but if these guys are willing to do this then why should we pay for collection service? It is a minor tax cost I know, but if there is an old man willing to do it for free, we could utilize the tax money in a better way, no? Let the man get an honest days wage out of this.
I don't mind if I set my cans out weekly at the pick up site and these guys take them away in the middle of the night (except for the ones who crush all the cans to fit more in and wake me up doing so!), but if they take away from the large aluminum can recycle bins at apartment complexes they are taking money from said complexes because they have to pay to have a truck come to pick them up. Hence they often have signs asking people not to take them away for personal reimbursement. The people who really need it, though... well... Then there are others who drive around stuffing their cars or mini trucks full of bags and then go and get more once they have returned to first run, etc. THEY can be doing something else, and are also wasting a lot of guys driving around to boot.
Not nearly enough to live on. That is how much he can make from doing that while his government send billions out of the country to help others and let's their very own citizens starve and live on the streets of Japan.
Japanese people need to wake up and see what their own government is doing to them yet the most of them will only bow before their masters.
Sad, so sad that a proud country like Japan has fallen so low.
Yes work ethic and getting enough for a daily bento and booze and also just having something to do. Poverty is pretty boring, basically. However, I wish they would have some consideration for the rest of trying to sleep. I mean, every Tuesday morning around 3 a.m. I am treated to sounds of cans being rustled out of the bin and smashed flat to the pavement. Every. Single. Last. One. At. 3. In.The.Bloody.Morning...

Here's hoping the man can collect enough cans to provide himself with room and board.

Of the many things I love about Japan, the extremely strong work ethic (as epitomised by the scrap can man) is definitely in the top ten!
